The Azure VM is running but for how long is unknown. Microsoft said it would pull the plug on or about November 14th.
Today the VM is still running. Perhaps Microsoft is just not adding new instances of this VM. A backup of the VM is downloaded from Azure.
Images are all ported from Azure to the new server.

We are happy to welcome former members back into the active community. It has been brought to my attention that a number of former members are marked as "banned". In many cases, this marking is a limitation of FluxBB, which is the forum software.
Because of the onslaught of thousands upon thousands of spammers over 20+ years, the decision was made to close off access to inactive accounts. Unfortunately, the only mechanism available is the "banning" tool. If you are an older member and you find your account has been banned, it may have been locked to prevent hacker access. You can ask SpaceNut to reactivate the account. See the procedure below. Those who were banned for inappropriate behavior may also apply. SpaceNut will then have the opportunity to evaluate your application.
SpaceNut is in the process of upgrading members from "banned" to inActive. Since there are over 1000 folks caught up in this situation due to the spammers, it is going to take SpaceNut a while to complete the upgrade.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects. We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions. We don't need more folks in that specialty. We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real universe, or who have a vision of life on Mars they'd like to pursue.

The images server at http://NewMars.com/phpBB3 is working well. The new server supports direct display of images.

NewMars.com is back online after an unscheduled outage for extended maintenance.
The new, updated system is installed and running.
An Email Outreach campaign to former NewMars members is on hold. One member will be reviewed per day, for 3+ years.
Recordings of the 25th Anniversary Mars Society Conference are now available on YouTube.

We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions. We don't need more folks in that specialty. We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real universe, or who have a vision of life on Mars they'd like to pursue.

For RobertDyck re email ...
In my reply about the outage, I started a list of folks who've contributed Mars related posts over the years.
I started with just one name but since then I've thought of many others, most notably including RobertDyck, whose epic topic about the Large Ship stands as a massive statue on Louis's plain where his Sagan City will someday rise.
The proportion of posts about Mars may be higher than all the off-topic posts might suggest. Events of the day having nothing to do with Mars often capture the attention and creative energy of members.
SpaceNut has been experimenting with topic titles recently, so perhaps we'll see more Mars related posts.
I'd like to see you get back working on the Large Ship. As I recall, we ran into a major obstacle when we begin to think about how to build the ship in orbit. It appears that no one in the current membership has the experience needed to plan construction of such a large vessel in LEO. Humans have built three space stations, but none have so far even begun to look like your vision. If that part of your vision is going to move forward, either you will have to develop the knowledge and skill (and the computing tools) to move forward, or we can invite domain experts to assist by building teams, or perhaps we can do both.
This forum has unrealized potential. I'd like to see some of that potential turn into achievements in 2026 and beyond.
Hint .... Void suggested sourcing iron oxide from the Moon. Using iron for your ship would increase mass but it would insure greater strength that is possible with aluminum. The Moon is also a potential source for aluminum, and perhaps other elements that others may consider useful.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects. NewMarsMember@gmail.com portal is open for business.
There was/were NO incoming traffic item(s) at the Portal this morning. NO email(s) was/were sent.
For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address. If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to NewMarsMember@gmail.com email address. Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.
The images server at http://NewMars.com/phpBB3 is working.
NewMars members enrolled include:
Site Administrator (shared by kbd512 and tahanson43206)
GW Johnson
kbd512
tahanson43206
SpaceNut
Calliban
Update: If a member of ** this ** forum applies for an account on the Image Server, please let us (Admins) know, so we can look for your User ID in the waiting room.
The images server at http://NewMars.com/phpBB3 is working well. The new server supports direct display of images.
The main NewMars forum has been updated from 2012 to 2024 standards. It was activated live on Sunday 2024/12/01.
The first post in this forum is dated 2001-09-04. Author was John Creighton from Nova Scotia.

A test phpBB3 site is available for NewMars Admins and members to evaluate. Use http://40.75.112.55/phpBB3/index.php

This bookmark is for a post by kbd512 about turbine engines vs piston ones. The article includes history and performance details.
https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 39#p236939
The article was written in response to application for membership by a gent who lives in Mexico, and who appears to have invented a number of turbine engines in the 1990's.

For kbd512 re #372
Thank you for your essay on turbines and piston engines! That piece is worth remembering, so I will create a bookmark.
I've given up on the gent from Mexico. Your assessment of his designs reinforces my decision to decline his bid for membership.
We may have to go a bit longer into 2026 before we pick up our first new member.

Just FYI ... I am preparing to test the extendedMerlin at 1 kg/s. ChatGPT5 thinks we will see much improved ISP.
I am running one more 1 second sprint to see if the current 2 kg/s model converges at 2 kg/s out for 2 kg/s in. It is within a tiny fraction at 15 seconds, but I wanted to try "just one more" time to see if the system would settle. It has spent several seconds building up mass in the intake but that process too seems close to a peak.
I'll start the 1 kg/s run from zero, and try to have something to show on Sunday.
The argument ChatGPT5 gives for encouraging this experiment is that this design should be able to throttle over a wider range than an ion engine given the same power input. We've seen already that we can get 10 times the thrust by increasing mass flow from 2 kg/s to 20 kg/s, just as Gw predicted. And ** that was ** with an engine running on fake heating. For our readers who might be seeing this for the first time, in that version of the extendedMerlin model, we were not yet heating the gas with solar energy. Instead, we were using fake heating from 20 Kelvin to 300 Kelvin. That was part of the CFD shakeout process. Now, with 40 MW of intentional heating, we are getting 1 ton-force from a flow of 2 kg/s and an estimated ISP of 250. I'm not certain of that figure because I haven't requested an ISP calculation for a while.
ChatGPT5 thinks we should see ISP near 460 or so with 1 kg/s, and thrust of about half a ton-force. If you are flying the vessel, the higher ISP should mean you get more run time for that thrust, or more momentum transferred to the vehicle, or perhaps both. I'm not sure about that.
Thanks again for your detailed essay on engine type and performance!

We received another email from our recent applicant. I have decided to decline the opportunity. I think this person is not a good fit for the group at this point in our history.
It seems unlikely we can help you. What is more, it seems you may be unable to help us. Your activity seems important so I hope you are successful. Please do not send more reports of your activities since 1990. I confess they are overwhelming.
You have shown no interest in us, but I have shown considerable interest in you.
Your application for membership is declined.
Naturally this is a disappointing outcome.
However, we are wide open for application from anyone who might think NewMars.com/forums might be a good place to pitch in to help other members and to receive feedback on activities that are Mars related.
