#1 Re: Human missions » Reasons against Mars Direct » 2003-12-27 03:54:45

Wim

Maybe they think about it this way:

If we bring up a timelined plan about missions to the red planet we better anticipate delays (mostly dollar/euro delays) so instead of planning each 2 earth-years a mission to Mars we will come up with more missions and separate the 'important' ones a bit further. Then if there are the delays, we can stay on track and don't loose public interest ?

Does this make sense or is there still X-mas turkey in my face ?

Beagle 2 is alive and kicking but he waits to send some tune untill it has enough media attention.  :;):

#3 Re: Unmanned probes » MOLTOV - Mars Orbital Laboratory... launch in '05 » 2003-11-29 11:27:50

Wim

I just read this thread. Amazing what people try to do to get some attention ...
I'm very sorry, but I don't believe one thing of it.

#5 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » question - nanotechnology » 2003-11-25 14:31:25

Wim

Did you ask any other questions about how much it has evolved since ... since when actually ?

#6 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » A Flag to Unite Terrans for Mars - Golden Ratio and Human Color Vision » 2003-11-25 14:26:51

Wim

I like the idea too, there's a nice Phi-story behind it, nice.
Indeed, it was too bad there was an American flag on the moon. If they just would have put the "humanity flag" there as well, sorry no would haves anymore.

Why not use a symbol (a statue of some kind), instead of a flag on Mars

It's just an evening thought ...

#7 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Poll @ Space.com » 2003-11-25 14:16:54

Wim

46% is for Humans on Mars
37% is for Returning humanity to the Moon
17% is for Energy-beaming power satellites

#8 Re: Human missions » First human on Mars. Man or woman ? - like in the title » 2003-11-25 14:13:01

Wim

or maybe a pregnant woman (and yes it's a boy .. oooh gosh)

#9 Re: Human missions » No plans for Mars mission in near future - sketchy details » 2003-11-25 14:00:51

Wim

I agree. A nation that tells everyone it's going for the moon, Mars, etc. in 30 years or so, get's the headlines, companies invest or at least show intrest. Maybe not immediately, but when they take the first step, that's when things get going.
I'm all for the do-strategy and not the we-should-strategy.

#10 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Planning Mars. - Why? » 2003-11-25 13:46:37

Wim

Maybe you should read 'Mars' and 'Return to Mars' by Ben Bova, that's about the politics and independence, etc.
Well, we should at least have some ideas how to set up a little 'governement' (the word sounds too big to me) before humans are going to Mars. Just to get started, and if the 'plans' don't work out, let them decide how to get organized. No ?

#11 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Own the moon? - Property rights on celestial bodies » 2003-11-24 10:21:09

Wim

On a personal level, I think it would be cool to look into the night sky and see the moon dotted with the lights of cities-but that's just me.

It's not just you.  smile

#12 Re: Terraformation » When should we terraform » 2003-11-24 10:11:45

Wim

Thank you very much for the response Free Spirit. I really appreciate it.
You are probably not interested in my view, but I'll give it anyway. Her goes ...

Technology will always evolve and that is inevitable. Wether it is for a good cause or for a bad cause is up to us. I personally think that getting involved for the good cause, will be beneficial for all humans and not by going back to living a simple and eco-friendly lifestyle. The human race has the instinct to evolve, to move on, to adapt, to change and to spread (like a virus if you want). I'm all for evolving, moving on, adapting, changing and spreading but for a good cause.
That's why I participate in this forum.

#14 Re: Human missions » No plans for Mars mission in near future - sketchy details » 2003-11-23 11:05:12

Wim

Well it seems very promising. Seeing is believing is what I'm thinking right now ...

#15 Re: Terraformation » When should we terraform » 2003-11-23 10:46:23

Wim

Hey Free Spirit,

It's just a question, please don't go looking for more behind it:
How did you find this forum if you totaly disagree with humans going away from the earth ?
What I mean is, I do not believe in ghosts so I do not attend any forum-discussions about how a ghost 'would' look like.

Don't take this personal please, I mean it as a serious question and I certainly don't want to upset you.

#17 Re: Water on Mars » 'smoking gun evidence that water was on Mars' » 2003-11-18 14:55:28

Wim

God, I wish we could send astronauts to Mars soon!
There are just so many questions to be answered and I'm not getting any younger. How anybody can resist the allure of that fascinating planet is beyond me!

I follow you Shaun, so many questions, so little time !
When I even just start thinking about the day the first human will set foot on Mars, that will be so 'world news'. I know I'll drink a couple to that.  yikes

#18 Re: Human missions » First human on Mars. Man or woman ? - like in the title » 2003-11-18 14:44:39

Wim

So instead of the first man or woman steps on the surface of the red planet, it will be the first family.  smile

#19 Re: Human missions » The Case for the Moon » 2003-11-18 14:41:00

Wim

To answer Wim's question - tourism and a military presence to dominate LEO.

Deploy a US Space Command base on Farside with gas core nuclear propelled spacecraft parked awaiting orders. At maximum burn, how long is the travel time to LEO? Pretty quick, right?

Yep you are right about military, but then it's not privatized anymore.

#20 Re: Human missions » The Case for the Moon » 2003-11-18 14:13:23

Wim

and lunar exploration should eventually be privatized as Mars exploration becomes NASA's primary focus

That would be great !
But the only 'profitable' moonproject would be tourism, no ? Or can someone think of something else ?

#21 Re: Civilization and Culture » Lets talk funding » 2003-11-18 14:06:30

Wim

Space Frontier Foundation president Rick Tumlinson did say on the testimony to the US senate that when you 'try' to negotiate with a private company to do a spacetrip of some kind, there are giggles in the crowd. (not his exact words)
Some company that's not space-related gets asked to invest in a spaceship or a spacetrip think about the money first (which still now is billions of $$) and then about the project and it is too bad it's not yet the other way around.
Maybe the X-prize will change that in a couple of years ...

#22 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Crime and Punishment - Speculation » 2003-11-18 13:52:18

Wim

That is one reason I'm opposed to using criminals for forced labor, the work usually has to be redone anyway.

Doesn't it depend on what kind of work they have to do. I mean with basic constructionwork of some kind, you can't do much wrong, can you ?
Moving the the big Martian rocks out of the way for a roadconstruction.
Let them breath some Martian air and see how the human reacts.
Dusting off solar panels.
I don't know I'm just thinking outloud, maybe you're right.

#23 Re: Life on Mars » What if the Event Never Happened? - And Mars is still a blue planet! » 2003-11-18 13:39:50

Wim

Humans going to other planets is unavoidable. The humans race is like a virus, it spreads. Or did I get this from Mr. Smith in The Matrix.
What I want to say is that those who are against it, will never be able to stop others from spacetravel.
Those who think hunger will once be 'cured' think wrong.
Those who think once there will be total peace think wrong.
Doing something against war and hunger will take a lot of time (read forever) and money (read zillions) but waiting for it until it is solved before pumping time (read forever) and money (read zillions) in spacetravel is ... wrong.

#24 Re: Not So Free Chat » Good books you've just read » 2003-11-18 12:58:29

Wim

I read some books from Ben Bova.
Mars
Return to Mars
...

I thought they were great. It's not about technical stuff but rather the political side etc ...

#25 Re: Terraformation » Nozomi might contaminate Mars - since it was not sterilized » 2003-11-18 05:12:32

Wim

Indeed, some lost probes to Mars crashed into it unsterilized and probably if the next probes (MERS, Express, ...) do find some algea or some sort of primitive microlife, there will be discussions wether they're from earth (Russia) or not.
Does anybody have any links to articles on unsterilized probes crashing into the red neighbour ?
