Re: Chat

Please forgive me for intruding.  Yes excentric, but he appears to be healthy.

I have tended to like Industrial/Technological society, but I think I do believe that in the times when farming was a major employer, excentric people might find a place for themselves in the old days, instead of perhaps ending up under some form of treatment.

I think that the American School system modeled after Prussian military traditions, may have been necessary for the industrial phase, but It is basically a method of incorporating the female population into a governing structure that dislikes boys and how boys are.  The encourages the exploitation and looting of social institutions such as marriage.

If it does turn out that AI and Robots produce abundance for everyone, and if Precision Fermentation and its like also produce abundance, the life style of this person could be encouraged, perhaps enhanced.  He does communicate on the internet.

In a world of abundance, doing some disliked tasks occasionally to get some of the means of existence may be suitable to some persons.

Better that then them to be in Jail or Institutionalized.

Re: Chat

This is an interesting matter for North America: Utube, Tesla Semi "SOLD OUT" After Massive New Upgrades!

I think that Europe and Canada are in error to try choking out Ice Carbon containing fuels.  America and China have it more correct.  Gun the economy so that you can build electric methods.

From what I read, the truck is expected to approach the efficiency of trains.  And it is interesting that the truck can recapture energy on the way downhill.

This will weave the East and West Coasts together more than before and it will shrink the cost of going North to the Canadian Border and South to the Mexican border.

Water travel is still the best, I expect, but not by as much as before.

Re: Chat

Tried making sun tea: ice tea made in summer sun. One gallon of water through a filter pitcher. 8 bags of black tea. Left outside on the south side of the house. Was going to leave it 4 hours, but forgot, left overnight. After 21 hours, I was afraid it would be too strong and bitter. Here in Canada we drink sweet tea with lemon. Took 2 cups of the tea out, added 1 cup white sugar, and heated in the microwave. Stir until dissolved. Added 1/2 cup lemon juice. It turned out weak. I was afraid it would be too strong, but it's weak.

Perhaps it's just not hot enough. June is cool, overcast and rainy. Didn't rain the day I made sun tea. But today the high is +23°C (73.4°F), overnight low +15°C (59°F). Sunday it's supposed to be +29°C (84.2°F), sun and clouds, mainly sunny. Muggy, humidity varying from 58% to 88%, but that won't affect tea in a sealed jar. I'll try again.

Rob:

Probably too cool to make tea in the sun.  Down here in Texas,  we rarely attempt that until the temperature exceeds 85 F = 29 C.  It only takes a couple o hours to brew at temperatures at or above those levels.  It's a chemical rates vs temperature thing.  Happens pretty quick when temperatures exceed 100 F = 38 C.

My wife and I make tea for the iced tea application as unsweetened,  unflavored tea.  It lasts longer without "spoiling",  if just tea.  By "spoiling",  I mean the taste goes bad if you leave it out in the heat too long. Best to bring it in and ice it down as soon as it is brewed.

Re: Chat

Trying again. Set it out at 4:00pm at 30°C = 86°F. Now it's 5:40 and 32°C = 89.6°F. One gallon jug looks.like tea, but instructions on the internet set let it steep 4 hours. Partly cloudy so heat from direct sun will not be that much. Tea bags are old too. For a while I was given lots of tea, but I normally drink coffee.

Brought it in close to 5 hours. Again, added 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup lemon juice to 1 gallon of sun tea. Result 4 litres (filled a pair of 2L pop bottles). Better.

Re: Chat

Am I a wuss? I just bought my first air conditioner.  Never had one as a child. My house was built in 1907. Got a window air conditioner. 700 sq ft house. Temperature outside today is 34°C = 93.2°F. 60% humidity. And my home office computer has an 800 watt power supply. It can reduce power when components demand less but the video card draws a lot.

I am in Central Sweden at present.  The temperature today was 22°C, but will be over 30°C next week.  I don't understand why certain politicos have a chip on their shoulder about air conditioning.  The same people tend to promote heat pumps.  Perhaps they are too technically illiterate to realise that they are the same technology, just working in reverse?  I don't think you should feel guilty about using air conditioning to cool your house.  It will raise your life expectancy and improve your productivity.

Re: Chat

I really don't want to rude or arrogant.  But I think that Solar, Wind, Nuclear Fission, Nuclear Fusion, Natural Hydrogen, and if needed power from orbit are coming, and some of them not that far off.

The Green mentality is pretty much like treating common people like surfs.  They are there to be taxed, to shut up, and to understand that comfort and happiness for their kind is sin.

It is anti-industrial, because humans are a burden on reality anyway.

Never mind that Nature can have all the stars and planets in the galaxy to be "Natural" with.  Except perhaps a few that like us may host what we arrantly claim as intelligence.

I think we have chances of getting through this OK, and even with a raised standard of living for most people.  I think the Earth has endured much worse disruptions than us.  And now that we understand that we need to be better Stewarts, we can invent methods to do so that do not make is poor.

Having a wonderful time on holiday in Sweden.  We are in Are at present.  Here is the view from our room.
20260714-173450.jpg

Temperature today peaked at 23°C.  When we get to Dalarna it is expected to be 30°C.  Central Sweden seems to get hot in summer, but can get down to -30°C in winter.  The land of extremes.  Land is cheap here.  I have sometimes wondered about building underground hot and cold stores and running a heat engine between them.  A 24/7 power source.

Re: Chat

Wow! Just got a request to fly to another location to service computer equipment for the Post Office. This time it's Arviat, Nunavut. The farthest north I've ever been was Churchill, and that was a previous job. Work took me to Churchill a few times. Arviat is straight north from that. So far north there are no trees, just tundra. This job is really showing me remote parts of Canada that I would never have seen. Still on the shore of Hudson Bay; Devon Island is 1,600km farther north.

Re: Chat

The flight was scheduled for Wednesday/Thursday July 22 & 23. Unfortunately the trip has been placed on hold. The flight is for the Post Office, but most offices are in stores of the Northern Store. Management for the Northern Store have asked local staff to try to install the equipment themselves. If I don't hear back, then the trip is cancelled.

For RobertDyck...

Any chance Northern Store would hire you as an online consultant?

With modern Zoom and Google service, you can participate in assisting from your home.

If they like the idea they might be willing to upgrade your hardware and provide high speed Internet if you don't already have it.

I don't know where to post this. Food for Earth. This is old, not new: cattails. Flour as rich as wheat flour? And more per acre than emmer, an ancient form of wheat? Plus pollen as a protein plant food source.

Re: Chat

I need a generic technology thread. Or do I create a new thread?

Latest video by Felix of What About It: SpaceX Starship Flight 14 Lost Way More Parts Than We Thought!
Second half of the video mentions Elon Musk wants to build an AI data centre in space. Satellites with greater solar panel area than the International Space Station. Each satellite would house a few blades of circuits, each with multiple processors. Each satellite would also have a large radiator to use space itself for cooling. These satellites would be in polar orbit, so receive sunlight 24/7. And the orbits would adjust, precessing as Earth orbits the Sun. So the orbit would complete one complete precess rotation per year. This means it tracks the Sun so all satellites are in direct sunlight 24/7. Satellites would communicate with Starlink, not direct communication with Earth.

I think this is dumb. Launching such a satellite requires a lot of money. Even with reduces launch cost of Starship. Service is not possible. When (not if) processors fail, they cannot be replaced. In space, the electronics must be hardened to withstand space radiation. Not necessary on Earth. Building a data centre on Earth appears a much MUCH more practical design.

One issue with a data centre on Earth, is cooling. These data centres have been designed to use evaporative cooling. That is, cooled with air conditioners. Like any air conditioner, there are two parts. The evaporator inside the building, where a coolant such as freon evaporates from liquid to gas absorbing heat as it does so. The other part is outside: the condenser. There the gas condenses to a liquid, releasing heat as it does so. Pressure of coolant in the condenser is higher, causing it to increase in temperature due to thermodynamics. That releases the heat. Pressure of coolant in the evaporator inside the building is lower, causing cooling due to thermodynamics. But data centres do not consider this to be enough. Clean water is sprayed on the outside of the cooling fins of the condenser outside the building. This water sprayed on hot aluminum alloy fins will evaporate into the environment. As that water evaporates, it cools, taking heat away. This consumes a lot of water.

This is not necessary. It's a design for a dry hot environment like Arizona. Some place that has a flowing river, you can have river water flow across an aluminum alloy heat exchanger for the condenser. The freon or whatever coolant is used for the air conditioner is contained. Instead of spraying clean water on the fins, river water flows across the fins. River water need not be clean, it can be river water. The river water will be warmed, but not boil. This will warm the river, but it means clean potable water is not consumed. The river is not consumed, it is just warmed.

If there is no convenient river, then the data centre could be built on the shore of a lake. The lake water could be pumped across the aluminum alloy cooling fins. This would warm the lake water. Or coast of an ocean. Ocean water can be pumped across the cooling fins. Again, ocean water is not consumed, it is just warmed. Nuclear power plants have been doing this for decades. It's not new. A simple way of building a data centre without consuming water.

By the way, ammonia is a more efficient coolant than freon. The first refrigerators were built with ammonia. The problem was one woman was asleep in her bed when her house refrigerator developed a leak. While she was a sleep, her house filled with so much ammonia that it killed her. She died in her sleep. Freon is clear, colourless, odourless, and non-toxic. If there's a leak, it's not dangerous. A refrigerator using freon consumes a little more electricity than one using ammonia, but it won't kill you. Then the fear that freon will destroy the ozone layer. Freon was replaced by something even less efficient, but will not kill you, and will not destroy ozone. I don't know what they're using now. But expect a data centre will use ammonia. Ammonia will not destroy ozone, just ensure no one sleeps there.

Re: Chat

The little I know about it is that in space cooling is troublesome but thought to be practical.  The energy is definitely an asset.

There are two types of compute: 1) Training 2) Inference.  They intend to do Inference in Sun Synchronous Orbit, because they have methods of error corrections from radiation that will not work for Training Compute.

The left wing is already jumping on organizing pillage gangs of the Verbal and Violent to oppose the use of Earth water and electricity resources.

It has come into focus in my mind that the whole history of the human species is that when a multi-talented group of people emerge from the wilderness and build a civilization, that civilization breeds a vampire like sub-group of those who are "Idiot Savants" with the talents to speak with such ability that they can organize violence to raid productive groups of multi-talent people, confiscating their wealth and rendering a civilization partially "Brain-Dead".  The propagate their "Idiot Savant" blood lines and replace the multi-talent people.

The Verbal and Violent "Idiot Savants" typically form monarchies, and Socialism and Communism.  They are all vampires.  And the tend to be jealous of technological talent people and to steal the wealth of the talented, and to at times put the talented into prisons or kill them.

A good treatment for this problem is the wilderness.  These "Idiot Savants" are parasites and are less likely to prosper in a wilderness.

Sun Synchronous orbits represent a form of wilderness.  And are not resources that Idiot Savant group violence can successfully confiscate at this time.

When there are sufficient numbers of carcasses in Sun Synchronous Orbit, the business of recycling them will arise.  It will be very possible.
The Sun Synchronous Satellites will be in a higher orbit than the LEO Satellites which present a danger of cascade impacts at this time.

Query: "What is the difference between Training Compute and Inference Compute?"
Quote:

Copilot Search Branding

Like

Dislike
Difference Between Training Compute and Inference Compute
Training compute is the large, one‑time computational work of building an AI model by processing datasets and adjusting its parameters, while inference compute is the ongoing, per‑request work of running a trained model to produce outputs for users
bestpractice.ai
bestpractice.ai
+1
.

Core Definitions
Training compute: The process of building a model. It involves feeding a large dataset into a neural network, repeatedly adjusting billions or trillions of parameters to minimize error. This is a batch, offline process that happens once per model version and is computationally intensive
neuraldocket.com
neuraldocket.com
+1
.

Inference compute: The process of using a trained model. Each inference takes a single input (e.g., a prompt, image) and produces an output. This is online, real‑time and repeats for every query, scaling with usage
.
Key Differences
Aspect    Training Compute
Inference Compute

Purpose    Build/learn the model
Apply the model to produce outputs

Timing    One‑time per model version
Continuous, per request

Workload type    Batch, offline
Real‑time, online

Scale    Large datasets, thousands of batches
Small inputs, many requests

Duration    Hours to months
Milliseconds per request

Cost profile    Fixed, upfront capital cost
Recurring operating cost, scales with demand

Hardware focus    High compute throughput (FLOPS), large memory bandwidth
High memory bandwidth, low latency

Cost and Strategic Implications
Training is expensive but finite; once complete, the model’s training cost is sunk

Inference can be up to 15× more expensive over a model’s lifecycle due to its scale and continuous nature

Inference is now projected to consume the majority of AI compute by 2030, making optimization (e.g., specialized chips like NVIDIA’s Blackwell GPUs) critical

Strategically, organizations must balance model creation (training) with efficient deployment (inference) to control costs and scale

Analogy: Training compute is like writing a book; inference compute is like printing and distributing each copy

In short, training compute is about creating the AI model, while inference compute is about serving it — and the latter is the ongoing cost driver in AI production.

So, at this time I read that training compute is not practical in orbit due to radiation and a lack of protection from it, but it is believed that inference can be error corrected when radiation causes an error.

Robotics and plasma types of propulsion may well make it possible to repair or recycle Sun Synchronous Satellites.

There are several propulsion systems that are under development that can do Metal>Plasma.

So your ideas are good, they could work for Training Compute.

Examples if Verbal and Violent Idiot Savants: Adolph Hitler, Democratic Presidential Candidates, Castro, Lenin, Stalin, Bernie?

See it, want it, take it, organize groups of idiots to confiscate it.

Crowds are always Idiots, that can be manipulated.
