Paintings of Mars, Planets, Cosmos by BryanVersteeg, ChesleyBonestell

While we as humans dream paint pictures of the planets and space exploration and new colonies...will they out there one day in the future paint pictures and dream of return to Earth?

I thought I would share some space artists, some of these artists alone you could spend a full day talking of just one artist and their amazing work. Some used traditional paint and brush, other artists made models and sculpted, some used chalk and pencil, other more modern artists use software and CGI paint programs.

For Mars_B4_Moon re new topic

Thanks for your significant investment of time and thought in compiling the opening post in this new topic!

SearchTerm:Museum of Space Art

I personally appreciated your mention of Dr. Gerard O'Neill's contribution to the genre, primarily (I suspect) through inspiration of creativity due to the scope of his ideas, and the power of his verbal and written presentations.

Earthsearch by James Follett (S2E1): cult sci-fi drama sequel to his original Earthsearch.
4 million years ago, a fantasy scifi story tells the tale of the crew of the starship Challenger abandoned their search for Earth and made their home on Paradise, the third planet of a solar system on the fringe of the galaxy. But..

Across the West I notice our art has got more Dystopia, Oppressive, Blade Runner Style and Technocracy and Dark, it is becoming less out the Exploration. maybe it is the influence of politics, the real world but Art and Movies have become more Apocalyptic, Bleak Neon Dark Metallic Cityscapes and Horror and Less about Freedom and Building

SL9 Impact Fragment G Plume
https://www.flickr.com/photos/geckzilla/49806406468/
Late last year and early this year I was working hard on combining some old imagery from Hubble from the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact event at Jupiter. I was staring at some fuzzy images (they were the sharpest images! but Jupiter is so far away, and I had to zoom way in...) and my imagination was running wild. After studying these images for so long I just had to take a break and create an illustration of what the plume might have looked something like up close.

Re: Paintings of Mars, Planets, Cosmos by BryanVersteeg, ChesleyBonestell

I have shared old traditional paintings and old school hand drawn cncept art but I think I will share where some modern computer artists cluster on the web

Video Games has probably replaced Movies and Music as the big Entertainment medium, they basaically build up virtual worlds inside these games.
I mentioned renderosity before and sometimes they share tips or free stuff or cgi renderings or skins, more than one artist might work on a project or video or visual illustration, the mountains in a scene or skin alone, the reptile features or furry animal hair on a beast might take time, the cliff face or landslide or lava on a planet could consume time, the metal body armor or rusted paint job on a broken scifi post apocalypse car might be difficult to do so they will often help each other out with starters or frames of a building or skins of a creature in the illustration community

https://www.renderosity.com/forums/thre … 3-andor-v4

I also mentioned art station above which has almost everything that anyone could illustrate, Fantasy, Western, Horror, Scifi, Thriller, Medieval Period Piece, Cartoonish and Kid like they do nearly everything anyone can paint.
A lot of these people seem to find work in the Video Game Community
https://www.artstation.com/?sort_by=community

there are sites where people buy magazine in America or British illustration magazines like 3D-world or Image Fx magazine where they share tips on new programs, digital paint brushes, style of ipad and pen that can make a digital pen seem more natural like a real paint brush or piece of chalk or pencil or pastel or water color paint.

https://www.creativebloq.com/imaginefx

Some of them have discussion forums and old bulletin boards and share their tips when doing commissioned illustration work for a client
https://forum.daz3d.com/forums/discussi … vironments

This digital site is more Dystopia Horror Based
https://www.scififantasyhorror.co.uk/th … ilmarsson/
Mars Vehicle Concept Artwork by Darren Bartley
https://www.scififantasyhorror.co.uk/ma … n-bartley/

New artists and professional and freelance feature on
https://conceptartworld.com/

This is another huge community, there is so much to be found in some digital art community I would barely have time to explore it even if I had an entire day free. They also have magazine articles on artists doing work in the gaming or illustration industry and an app for your phone.
https://www.artstation.com/?sort_by=community

CG society has lots of scifi concepts but also a huge community of people who are good with faces, humans, aliens, humanoid, fantasy Elf or Goblin and Orc
https://cgsociety.org/search/works?query=Mars

Deviant Art itself is another huge community, a mix of amateur and professional drawing, sculpting or making almost anything on the name of a Plant or Scifi Idea or Book alone you can find another rabbit hole of amazing illustrations
https://www.deviantart.com/search?q=mars

Pinterest alone has a world of illustration and pictures, however many shared are not owned by the original artist, some pics will be unnamed. I guess its like how people would share art on the blogspots, livejournals and wordpress and facebooks and instagrams or share memes
https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=mars

Behance is another world of digital art with many many artists
https://www.behance.net/galleries/illus … igital-art

The pics of some artists features on 'illistrationx' however it is not as big as other sites
https://www.illustrationx.com/artists/OliverHasselluhn
https://www.illustrationx.com/artists/CarlesGarciaODowd
https://www.illustrationx.com/artists/AndreasHoeher

Tor is a site that would often feature books, scifi cartoons, video games, tv shows etc
https://www.tor.com/

Comicbook art and story board and the traditional art that featured in Marvel or DC comics, Tales from the Crypt E comics series, Whiz comics Fawcett Publications is a whole other world in itself. Some are not cartoony they have elements of hyper realism like Alex Ross but they will often feature the human figure or super heroic visual form that you see in their comic books and superhero movies.
https://www.comicartfans.com/comic-arti … x_Ross.asp
A lot of lay-off seems to have come with Covid lockdowns in California and NewYork, you can buy a comic book digitally but people still seem to buy them the old fashioned collector comicbook way so with the cost of lockdowns you had less people going to comicbook shops, less artists meeting up. The Big Two studios Marvel and DC do still make the bigger money, they sell the movies and cartoons and they sold most comics but they now had to compete with a new flood of Japanese Manga and South Korean movies and shows, the kids and adult of American suddenly started to buy overseas product. I mentioned before in other threads that there was a feeling that Hollywood and the industry was stagnating, maybe dying and politically going backwards while comics and movies from South Korea and Japan and other places were outselling America's local industries. I don't believe the comicbook thing is dead, there are lots of smaller indie artists working for smaller independent studios, new names like Dynamite comic publishers, Image comics, .IDW Comics, Boom Studios comics etc. You might not be able to tell but modern comic book artists will often mix the traditional hand draw pencil art with modern computer digital techniques, they could have a concept story board writer guy, pencil-er, an inker, then colorists or digital artists all working as a team trying to meet a deadline, each of them finishing a story panel by panel getting so much wrote and drawn out each day to get the comicbook out by the end of the week.

In the end of the day even with our new modernization and AI software the artificial human machine now producing impressive art, music, poetry and illustration, people still like to collect art with that hand drawn human element to it.

Meet Chesley Bonestell, the most important space artist you’ve probably never heard of
https://astronomy.com/news/2019/03/meet … r-heard-of
Before spacecraft revealed our solar system, Chesley Bonestell's art offered a window into the environments of outer space. His visions often proved true.

Voyager: The Mission
https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-o … 9880368000
Born in 1888, Chesley Bonestell grew up on San Francisco’s Nob Hill, and survived the 1906 earthquake to emerge as a leading American architectural designer. Having left his artistic fingerprints on some of the best known structures of the era, including the façade of the Chrysler Building, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Golden Gate Bridge, he moved on to Hollywood, where his matte paintings provided the stunning backgrounds for such films as, The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), Only Angels Have Wings (1939), Citizen Kane (1941), and The Magnificent Ambersons. (1942). Always fascinated by astronomy, Bonestell began combining the best available science with his own artistry to produce paintings of the surface of other worlds. Life magazine published a spread of the artist’s extraterrestrial scenes in its issue of May 29, 1944. The editors of Mechanix Illustrated introduced their readers to Bonestell’s notion of a “Moon Rocket” in September 1945. In 1949, he collaborated with writer Willy Ley to produce the beautifully illustrated book, Conquest of Space. The next year, Bonestell teamed with producer George Pal and science fiction writer Robert Heinlein to create a classic space flight film, Destination Moon (1950). The artist contributed illustrations to a series of eight Colliers magazine articles on space flight that began to appear in the spring of 1952, and to the books, often with an accompanying text by Ley and/or Wernher von Braun, describing flights to the Moon and Mars that spun out of the magazine series. A generation of youngsters nursed dreams of interplanetary travel inspired by Chesley Bonestell’s dramatic visions of other worlds.

Kepler-186f is the first Earth-size planet discovered in the potentially 'habitable zone' around another star, where liquid water could exist on the planet's surface. Its star is much cooler and redder than our Sun. If plant life does exist on a planet like Kepler-186f, its photosynthesis could have been influenced by the star's red-wavelength photons, making for a color palette that's very different than the greens on Earth. This discovery was made by Kepler, NASA's planet hunting telescope.

Farewell Earth! - Part 1 of Martian sketches by Andrey Maximov
https://www.humanmars.net/2023/10/farew … rtian.html
Environment concept artist Andrey Maximov from Armenia has created an impressive set of artworks called Martian sketches depicting a "routine" journey to Mars in 2089. So far he has published 25 pages of those sketches. As the artist describes them: "this series is kind of like the road sketches of a member of an expedition to Mars. It's a routine flight in the not-too-distant future. The planet is more or less inhabited. We have an orbital station around Mars. There are already several settlements on the surface, mining is going on."
Here are the first 10 of Andrey's Martian sketches depicting the expedition leaving Earth.
