Re: Monarchy? - WHy not a Constitutional Monarchy?

All monarchies are the legacy of conquest.  They are what you get when another nation invades your nation and wishes to stake a permanent claim on you.  It is unfair, precisely because wealth is distributed by heritage, rather than having earned it.

This is because, with the exception of a few islands like Iceland and New Zealand, all the land was already occupied by people millennia ago. Mars doesn't have that. If someone bankrolls a colony on Mars and declares themselves Queen, who are they stealing from? And why should their heirs pay hefty inheritance taxes because they haven't "earned" the wealth?

Re: Monarchy? - WHy not a Constitutional Monarchy?

For Terraformer....

This topic provides an opportunity for me (as an individual) to express appreciation for Queen Elizabeth, and for the British people who have (apparently) successfully managed the transition from pure monarchy to a system that allows the population to rule itself while the Monarchy provides a shared framework for good order and collective feeling.  The American system seems (to me at least) to lack a unifying psychological anchor.

I had not previously thought a monarchy is a good idea, and in general I would be opposed, but Great Britain ** seems ** to be showing a way to make the concept work over the long term.

The key for the success of your idea (on Mars or away from Earth) seems (to me at least) to depend upon how you structure your society so that each member feels a sense of participation and value.  I heard an analysis of the Star Spangled Banner (music) yesterday, as the United States approaches the 4th of July. I was struck by the (news to me) that the author of the work included the word "slave" in the third stanza, which few Americans ever see or hear.

In the analysis, the speaker offered the perspective that to the Americans of the time (ca 1814) the word "slave" took in not only black people, but white people who were "enslaved" by the Monarch.

'The customary color-coding of the culture war is boring. Let’s get Tolkien-pilled and talk not about red and blue, but hobbits and elves. (While not forgetting the fact that for the two centuries before 1980 or so, red—the color of anger—was the color of the left.)

We know who are the hobbits and who are the elves. We know who is on top and who is on the bottom. (Of dwarves and orcs, we shall not speak.) We know what the elves want: they want to live beautiful lives. We know what the hobbits want: they want to grill and raise kids.

Dear hobbits: you can only lose the culture war. Even when elves use political power to impose elf culture on you, you cannot use political power to impose hobbit culture on elves.

I mean, sometimes (rarely) you can. It never works out well. I suppose that in theory you could massacre all the elves. You don’t seem up for that in practice. As an elf… I have to regard that as a good thing. But it leaves you, dear hobbits, in a real bind.

If there was a way to impose hobbit culture only on hobbits, there might be a case. But our country is not configured to support separate rules for elves and hobbits. If it was, it would be a different country. Maybe a better country—but it isn’t.

The only way to impose hobbit culture is to impose it on everyone—including elves. Elves do not like to be told what to do by hobbits. Even advice makes elves mad. It is outrageous and disrespectful. And when hobbits coerce elves… utterly unacceptable. Even if any such coercion is only symbolic, it is a profound violation of elven rights. Your elf will not just be mad—he will explode—wronged in every fiber of his being...'

No Monarchy has managed to land anything on Mars, the Russian Soviets or USSR landed something which briefly transmitted and died, NASA and JPL have managed to land many missions, nothing can match the feats of the USA on Mars. The Chinese government now somewhat modernized from old Communism and built on new economic and old State traditions, Chinese Trade with State Atheism, Unitary Leninist one-party people's republic now with a modern Space Agency they have a China Rover, the ESA a collection of non-EU and EU nations tried and failed to land but they have a successful orbiters like 'Mars Express' a mission with interesting finds mentioned in many newmars threads,  India has no lander but the Hindu first government a Federal parliamentary constitutional republic has a Mars orbiter, the crazy USA and kamikaze Japanese were dumb enough to export islamism to Mars, a theocratic monarchy with islamic mohammedanism as its Sharia Law has an orbiter around Mars.

King Charles III, her son and successor, began her reign by already joining the ten oldest monarchs in the world, at 73 years old. Carlo is not even the youngest of the elders, because the co-prince of Andorra, Joan Enric Vives i Sicília, was born eight months later.

Andorra is a very small principality between France and Spain, the sixth smallest state in Europe: it is governed by an almost single political system, a parliamentary diarchy headed by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, and the bishop of the diocese Catalana of Urgell, precisely Vives i Sicília.
After the death of Elizabeth II, the oldest ruler in the world is now Salman bin Abdulaziz al Saud (86), king of Saudi Arabia. In truth, the date of birth of the Saudi royals is not certain, but it is known that since the founder of the dynasty, Abdulaziz ibn Saud, died, only his children have gone to the throne, from the oldest to the youngest. The dynasty at the head of the Saudi monarchy is one of the richest in the world because it manages the country’s abundant oil fields, and it is also extremely numerous: it has about 15,000 members, even if most of the power and influence is held by a circle. of “only” 2,000 members.

The living monarch with the longest-lived kingdom is Hassanal Bolkiah, sultan of Brunei, a small monarchy on the island of Borneo (Southeast Asia). There was a lot of talk about Brunei in international newspapers three years ago, when Bolkiah himself tried to introduce Islamic law into the country (sharia) which involved things like stoning in the case of sexual intercourse between people of the same sex, only to be done later reverse. Bolkiah has reigned for nearly 55 years and is also on the list of senior monarchs (he is 76 years old).

Re: Monarchy? - WHy not a Constitutional Monarchy?

If Britain Got Rid Of Their Monarchy?

The televised 1994 interview with Jonathan Dimbleby, a well-known British journalist, was all but the final nail in the coffin of the Wales’ troubled union. When asked if he had been “faithful and honorable” during his marriage, the prince answered “yes,” then paused and added this kicker—”until it became irretrievably broken down, us both having tried.”

The program, which aired on BBC and was done to mark the 25th anniversary of his investiture as Prince of Wales, was intended to show to a more human and warm side of Charles, but roundly backfired when the heir to the British throne publicly admitted that he had committed adultery.

Charles also said that he was not considering a divorce from Diana and but added, he did not believe a divorce should prevent him from becoming King. The prince also insisted there was “no truth” to the rumors he was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles and described her as “a great friend” whose support he valued.

'Charles goes to the opera at the worst possible time.'

In 1991, eight-year-old Prince William underwent emergency surgery for a skull fracture after being hit by a golf club while playing with schoolmates. The young prince was kept overnight at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital following an hour-long operation. Diana spent the night sleeping in a bed set up near William's room so she could look after her son. Charles took a different approach

Rule by monarchy is rule by an overclass that is established by conquest.  The descendants of the conquering Normans who rode beside William in 1066, are part of the English aristocracy.  They still own 20% of English land, for no other reason than the privilage of their birth and the murdering carried out by their ancestors.  The Norman conquest never ended.  Why would the average Joe want to live under a system like that if he didn't have to?

Re: Monarchy? - WHy not a Constitutional Monarchy?

For Calliban re #64

In general, I appreciate your sentiment in this post.

However, I'd like to take this opportunity to point out the opportunity the example of Monarchy (in many places and times) provides, for humans trying to work out a way of living together productively.

The issue I'm interested in here is the difference between the practical governing responsibilities, which the UK has transferred to Parliament and to the Prime Minister, and the state duties which reside still (in the UK) in the Monarchy.

Looking forward, since we can see in the US that trying to combine both functions in one person is ** really ** asking a lot, perhaps it makes sense to at least ** think ** about creating a "First Family" position that would run concurrently (but independently) of the governing office.

I'll be interested in your evaluation of this suggestion.

In the mean time, the UK is dealing with a 1000 year tradition that is ** still ** working, although it seems a bit creaky at this point.

In the geothermal topic, I've proposed that the existing structure might provide a mechanism for leadership that is not available to a short term leader such as a Prime Minister.  In holding a lifetime office, King Charles the 3rd can (were he to so choose) provide leadership to install a geothermal power plant to meet all the needs of Windsor Castle and have power to spare to pay back the investment.

In the case of Mars, I don't foresee much chance of a hereditary leader, but perhaps some way of achieving continuity of leadership might be invented.

Re: Monarchy? - WHy not a Constitutional Monarchy?

Infrastructure needs long term thinking that a democracy is ill suited to provide. Perhaps by appointing someone to a lifetime position to manage it, with their income indexed to the income of the infrastructure, would be a way forward. In the UK, this could be done by directing the Crown Estate to focus on long term projects, like power production and railway lines.

Doesn't have to be a hereditary position of course. Though in space, since it's not unlikely that a single wealthy founded will be stumping up the cash to build some of the colonies, it may turn out that way if they decide to keep it in one persons hands in their will...

Re: Monarchy? - WHy not a Constitutional Monarchy?

For Terraformer re #66 and topic in general

Please continue developing the train of thought of a democratic institution without heredity but ** with ** long term thinking build in.

We actually have something like that already ... hopefully forum members can think of other examples, but in the states we have retirement funds (some for entire states) that are responsible for providing income to support retirement of their citizen/members far into the future.

Perhaps some of the insurance companies come close to managing for the long term.

By history, the UK has an institution that comes pretty close to demonstrating some of the features of a long term institution.  I personally think that a single genetic line is not a great idea.

Your post suggested a life time appointment.  Our (US) experience with life time appointments just took a serious downward turn, so I am less enthused with the idea that I might have been a few years ago.

Never-the-less, the direction you've hinted looks well worth exploring further.

Former king joins movement to restore Nepal’s status as Hindu kingdom
https://www.oneindia.com/india/former-k … 24756.html

Until 1990, Nepal was an absolute monarchy running under the executive control of the king. Faced with a people's movement against the absolute monarchy, King Birendra, in 1990, agreed to large-scale political reforms by creating a parliamentary monarchy with the king as the head of state and a prime minister as the head of the government.

Nepal's legislature was bicameral consisting of a House of Representatives and a National Council. The House of Representatives consists of 205 members directly elected by the people. The National Council had sixty members, ten nominated by the king, thirty-five elected by the House of Representatives and the remaining fifteen elected by an electoral college made up of chairs of villages and towns. The legislature had a five-year term but was dissolvable by the king before its term could end. All Nepali citizens 18 years and older became eligible to vote.

The executive comprised the King and the Council of Ministers (the Cabinet). The leader of the coalition or party securing the maximum seats in an election was appointed as the Prime Minister. The Cabinet was appointed by the king on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. Governments in Nepal have tended to be highly unstable; no government has survived for more than two years since 1991, either through internal collapse or parliamentary dissolution by the monarch on the recommendation of the prime minister according to the constitution.

The movement in April 2006 brought about a change in the nation. The autocratic King was forced to give up power. The dissolved House of Representatives was restored. The House of Representatives formed a government that had successful peace talks with the Maoist Rebels. An interim constitution was promulgated and an interim House of Representatives was formed with Maoist members. The number of seats was also increased to 330. The peace process in Nepal made a giant leap in April 2007, when the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) joined the interim government of Nepal.

Monarchism the young and advocacy of the system of monarchical rule

https://unherd.com/thepost/do-young-peo … democracy/

Of course, compared to older generations, the 18-24s are still the least supportive of the monarchy overall. The data shows a steady increase in enthusiasm with each older generation: a quarter of 35-44s strongly agreed, a third of 55-64s, and so on. This is as expected, given that they grew up in a culture which unequivocally saw the monarchy as integral to British identity, with the feeling of national unity surrounding the late Queen’s Coronation still in living memory. The same cannot be said for Generation Z and millennials. And yet, among these demographics, those against the monarchy are in a minority. Why might this be?

Sick Of Being Ignored, Some In Scotland’s Orkney Islands Want To Return To Norway After 550 Years

Sick of being ignored by far-away politicians

Could the Scottish Orkney Islands really become part of Norway?
https://www.euronews.com/2023/07/04/cou … -of-norway

The islands have been inhabited for at least 8,500 years, originally occupied by Mesolithic and Neolithic tribes and then by the Picts. Orkney was colonized and later annexed by the Kingdom of Norway in 875 and settled by the Norsemen. In 1472, the Parliament of Scotland absorbed the Earldom of Orkney into the Kingdom of Scotland, following failure to pay a dowry promised to James III of Scotland by the family of his bride, Margaret of Denmark.

What would the flag makers say of Monarchs, the USA after all was founded as a Rebellion of Independence fighting tyranny from a foreign King. Thomas O. Paine, who served as the third Administrator of NASA, designed a Mars flag in 1984. Paine's Mars flag includes a sliver of Earth near the hoist side of the flag "as a reminder of where we came from, and a star near to the other side, to remind us of where we are going. In the center of the field is a representation of the Mars planet symbol, with its arrow pointing out to the star, acknowledging that Mars is not our destination, merely a way station on a journey that has no ending". Pascal Lee, a former NASA research engineer designed a tricolor flag for Mars in 1999. It was flown into space on STS-103 by astronaut John M. Grunsfeld. The sequence of colors, from red, to green, and finally blue, represent the transformation of Mars from a lifeless planet to one teeming with life, as inspired by Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy of novels. It is also flown at the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station, on behalf of the Mars Society. https://web.archive.org/web/20070429203 … mars.flag/

Apart from its South China Sea coast, it is completely surrounded by the Malaysian state of Sarawak, a Unitary jihadi Sharia Law islamist absolute monarchy. In year 2013, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah announced his intention to impose Penal Code from the islamist jihadi Sharia Law on the country's mohammedans, which now make up roughly eighty percent of the country's population. This implemented firstly in three islamist jihadi phases, culminating in 2016, and making Brunei the first and only country in East Asia to introduce Sharia into its penal code, the United Nations wrote them strongly worded letters and began expressing "deep concern".
