Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.  Ls 0 is the moment when the Sun appears to transit from one hemisphere to the other.  The transition itself is a function of the tilt of an object with respect to the Solar plane. Per squarewidget.com, Hipparchus created the celestial coordinate system we use today.

Note#3: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Note on data below: The figure quoted after distance is a rate of progress along the orbital path [exact meaning to be determined]

The work that lies ahead for the astronomical community is daunting - there is work ahead for centuries

As a general observation ... I've become increasingly interested in knowing what the larger view of the sky might be like.
The site: theskylive.com does a terrific job of matching the view from Earth towards Mars, against a background of actual astronomical plates.
I wish there were a way (or rather, I wish I ** knew ** about a way that may exist) to enlarge the view until the entire galaxy is in view.
Update 2021/07/30 I wrote to an astronomer to ask if there might be a web site with a view showing the galaxy in context of a given view.
Update 2022/01/22 What I'm asking for is a "Zoom Out" feature.  If anyone knows of such a service, please contact the NewMars portal.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending upward and East as seen from Earth
In recent days, the curve has been holding steady , and on 2022/10/08, it is inclining upward at about 3 degrees

Mars and Earth are coming closer after Conjunction.  The two planets were on opposite sides of the Sun at Earth Distance maximum October 2021.

Light travel in one second is (about) 300,000 kilometers. The distance covered in one minute is about 18,000,000 kilometers.
Estimated light times: 1:18, 2:36, 3:54, 4:72, 5:90, 6:108, 7:126, 8:144, 9:162, 10:180, 11:198,12:216, 13:234, 14:252, 15:270, 16:288, 17:306
Light travel time today is between 5 and 6 minutes. Communications delay would be 10+ minutes round trip.

In his online interview with Dr. Zubrin at the 2020 Mars Conference, Elon Musk reminded the audience that communications with Mars will necessarily include an intermediary station to handle traffic when the Sun is between Mars and Earth.  Communications delays in that circumstance will increase due to the extra distance to be covered.  Mr. Musk indicated he expects such communication will be handled by laser.  Location would be optimum at poles of solar plane.

Update 2022/10/23 According to www.hercampus.com, Retrograde movement will ** start ** October 30, 2022.
That would mean I've been incorrectly reporting the Eastward movement of Mars (with respect to Earth)
Mars is moving Eastward as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars movement will occur in months ahead.
Eastward movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520 - Update 2022/10/10 Eastward movement is still in progress on sol 593 but is slowing notably

This web site offers an online model of the solar system: www.solarsystemscope.com  It requires Chrome 57, Firefox 52 or Safari 10.1. Viewed 2022/10/13: Opposition will occur some time in December of 2022.  Per earthsky.org, the date is December 8, 2022.

The Next New Year's on Mars will occur when Solar Longitude reaches 360 degrees. <<== The current year on Mars is 36
Per www.planetary.org this occurred February 7, 2021 (on Earth). The new Mars Year was 36.

The last Skip Day occurred  October 10,  2022 on Earth. A Skip Day occurs when the longer Mars Sol accumulates 24 Earth hours.
The next Skip day is expected November 16, 2022 (range 15th >> 17th) on Earth.  The next re-alignment will occur 37*7-3 Days out: June 23, 2023

For those who may not be following this proposed calendar closely, there exists a "feature" I had not anticipated.
Days of the week fall behind Earth due to the longer Sol, but they gain when Friday is omitted at the end of a Quarter
337 Earth days were observed to elapse in the 2020 weekday cycle. There were 7 week day transitions and 2 Quarter ends.
The next cycle began on the first Sol of the period of coincidence. The  alignment of weekdays interval is in the range: (310 - 337)
To find the first day of a period of coincidence: Set up: SearchTerm(colon) and (colon)Alignment and J0036*

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

This post is a special note/report about the approach of the beginning of "regrograde" movement of Mars.

According to www.hercampus.com, retrograde movement is expected to start October 30, 2022.

The daily Mars Calendar postings have been recording the movement of Mars eastward against the background of stars, as seen from Earth.

That movement has been slowing noticeably in recent days.

Oct. 30, 2022
Mars goes retrograde on Oct. 30, 2022, at 9:26 a.m. EST. Surely, this will make Halloweekend interesting. "Mars will stay retrograde of 80 days, turning direct on January 12, 2023," explains Furiate. "Because of the retrograde cycle, Mars will remain in the sign of Gemini for nearly 8 months.

In recent days, the curve has been increasing , and on 2022/10/24, it is inclining upward sharply at about 20 degrees
As of 2022/10/25, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the top border.

Tahanson do you think Mars could have localized Daylight Saving Clocks to suit its regions

growing on food Mars will be different to Earth, it might have what feels like a Year Long Summer and Year Long Winter, so for the mental health of the people should it have 'daylight savings time'

There might be radio broadcast needed in a colony or service advertisement reminded people to adjust clocks.

Mexicans say no....except along border

Mexico scraps daylight savings time except along border
https://apnews.com/article/mexico-bbb06 … 89cb8e2626

The idea was to save on electricity, save fuel, conserve candles and keep farm workers more happy. In the USA Hawaii and Arizona ignore it, in New Zealand astronomer George Hudson proposed the idea of changing clocks by two hours. Chile and South Australia observe it, in Uruguay they keep having uprising and votes to either bring it back in and get rid off it again and bring it in once more in an almost comical political news cycle. Russia although Northern like USA, Canada, and European countries it ignores it and returns to permanent Standard Time, Hokkaido and most Japan Observed it for a while and quit.  Jamaica, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Turkey, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Macau, Sudan, Azerbaijan, Belarus have all abandoned Daylight Saving?

Sometimes a map image explains best.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

For Mars_B4_Moon .... your post about Daylight Savings Time is certainly a useful reminder of what NOT to do on Mars.

My understanding is that Time Zones were introduced in an effort to try to coordinate railroad schedules.

Daylight Savings appears (to me at least) to have been driven by the consequences of Time Zones.

At the time (before radio) Universal Time was not an option.

Now, if everyone set time by a Universal Time clock on Mars, they could manage their schedules with precision, and allow the position of the Sun to determine local customs.  There would be NO need for Time Zones on Mars, if that were the path chosen by residents.

Thanks for introducing Time Zones for discussion.

In considering this subject, I realize I have NO idea if Noon wanders on Mars as it does on Earth.

Here is a snippet from Google about the Lissajous effect:

Lissajous used a narrow stream of sand pouring from the base of a compound pendulum to produce the curves. If the frequency and phase angle of the two curves are identical, the resultant is a straight line lying at 45° (and 225°) to the coordinate axes.

Today on Earth: 2022/10/28 Friday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html also see: in-the-sky.org for oppositon/perigee/aphelion

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 11 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 330 degrees

Solar Longitude: 328.7 Sol Number: 611  Change in degrees is +.6 Julian date is: J0036611

Solar Longitude: 327.6 Sol Number: 609  Change in degrees is +.6 Julian date is: J0036609

Aphelion occurred near Ls 070 on Sol 153 (per www.planetary.org)

Note#3: The computations below are dependent upon both the computations provided by the reference web site and by accuracy of recording of the time of observations.  The calculations use tenths of hours.  The Sun Distance needs to be captured at the moment the time increments to a given tenth.

Note on data below: The figure quoted after distance is a rate of progress along the orbital path [exact meaning to be determined]
Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun.
The figure computed to the right of "Difference" is the rate of change of the distance to Sun. Increasing to Aphelion/Decreasing to Perihelion.

Observation: The sky view is ** filled ** with objects and very few have been recorded and given identification by humans or their robot assistants
And! ** All ** the location assignments are from the perspective of Earth.  The entire catalog needs to be adjusted when inter-stellar travel begins
The work that lies ahead for the astronomical community is daunting - there is work ahead for centuries
2022/01/19 - All current (existing) stellar catalogs are computed with reference to the Earth.  Another civilization would use it's planet as reference.
Perhaps a Milky Way frame of reference will become necessary at some point. The Earth is as good a Zero point as any, for humans.

--- Mars is approaching the start of Retrograde Movement as seen from Earth. On 2022/10/27 the reverse curve is in view.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/10/25, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the top border.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

This post is for astronomy enthusiasts who might be in broadcast range of the NewMars forum....

SearchTerm:Retrograde movement of Mars with respect to Earth Sol 613 J0036613

To my knowledge there are no currently active members with an interest in astronomy, but at one time Palomar took the lead in reporting celestial events.

In recent times, Mars_B4_Moon has done a terrific job of reporting news of celestial events.

Today's post is about an that event occurs in the observed orbit of Mars quite infrequently ...

If a reader calls up https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker over the next several hours, there will be an opportunity to catch the transition from regular movement (as seen from Earth) and retrograde movement.

At 17:12 local time, Mars is showing RA 05h 39m 24.5s.
At 18:23 local time, Mars is showing RA 05h 39m 24.7s so it is still edging left (in the view)
At 20:26 local time, Mars is showing RA 05h 39m 25.0s still edging left (in the view from Earth)
At 21:26 local time, RA is holding steady - the transition to retrograde movement may be in progress
Next day at 7:47 local time, RA is steady 05h 39m 25.0s - Mars is shown at the peak of the parabola in transition to retrograde movement

At 18:23 local time, Mars is showing Declination 23 degrees 46 minutes 1.1 seconds ... in the next few hours this reading will increase.
At 20:27 local time, Mars is showing Declination 23 degrees 46 minutes 15.2 seconds
At 21:26 local time, Mars is showing Declination 23 degrees 46 minutes 21.9 seconds
Next day at 7:47 local time, Mars is   Declination 23 degrees 47 minutes 32.2 seconds - RA is about to begin decrease

In 72 hours (or so) this reading will increase to Declination 23 degrees 58 minutes and change.

RA will decrease to 05h 39m 13.7s and change....

One Day Note: Mars is at the point of starting retrograde movement as seen from Earth at theskylive.com/mars-tracker
One day note 2: Today is the last Sol of Month 22. It is also the last Sol of Astronomical Month 11

Galaxy PGC 136046 RA 05h 37m 25.3s Mars will pass above 136046 in retrograde movement - Day 1
TYC 1861-448-1 Mg 10.76 RA 05h 38m 24.5s - Day 0 near top of view - Day 1 past 154  - Day 2 144 - Day 3
Galaxy PGC 136057 RA 05h 38m 35.5s just above path and ahead - Day 1 at Mars - Day 2 past Mars - Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6
---

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/10/25, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the top border.

Mars has been moving Eastward as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars. Movement is paused in RA on 2022/10/30 as predicted

2022/01/19 - All current (existing) stellar catalogs are computed with reference to the Earth.  Another civilization would use it's planet as reference.
Perhaps a Milky Way frame of reference will become necessary at some point. The Earth is as good a Zero point as any, for humans.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/10/25, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the top border.

Mars has been moving Eastward as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars. Movement is paused in RA on 2022/10/30 as predicted
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars movement will occur in months ahead.

Re: Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender...

Today on Mars: 0036/23/05 Thursday <<-- Days of the week offset 1 with Earth.  (count from Mars to Earth (updated 2022/09/03))

Today on Earth: 2022/11/04 Friday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html also see: in-the-sky.org for oppositon/perigee/aphelion

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 330 degrees

Solar Longitude: 332.5 Sol Number: 618  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036618
Solar Longitude: 332.0 Sol Number: 617  Change in degrees is +.6 Julian date is: J0036617
Solar Longitude: 331.4 Sol Number: 616  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036616
---

Note that Solar Longitude measurement varies as a function of location in orbit.  Ls 0 is the moment when the Sun appears to transit from one hemisphere to the other.  The transition itself is a function of the tilt of an object with respect to the Solar plane. Per squarewidget.com, Hipparchus created the celestial coordinate system we use today.

Note#2: https://theskylive.com/mars-tracker  This web site shows the astronomical position of Mars as seen from Earth
Todo: At next Aphelion/Perihelion record the Mars data J00##### (and set Search term)
Perihelion occurred at Ls 251 on Sol 485 - Earth Date 2022/06/21 Next: (estimated) 2024/05/08

Aphelion occurred at--- Ls 071 on Sol 152.  Aphelion Earth Dates: Earlier: 2017/10/07, 2015/11/20

Distance: Mars >> Sun per theskylive.com:   222,964,196 km [24.7 km/s] Difference is +193498 <= 8062 km/hour at 8.0 on 11/04 (time 8:00)

--- Mars has begun Retrograde Movement as seen from Earth. On 2022/10/30 the reverse began.
Galaxy PGC 136046 RA 05h 37m 25.3s  - Remaining in view while Mars holds steady Day 1 - 6
Trio: TYC 1861-448-1 Mg 10.76 RA 05h 38m 24.5s - Remaining in view while Mars holds steady Day 0 - 8
---

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

Mars has been moving Eastward as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars. Movement is paused in RA on 2022/10/30 as predicted
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars movement will occur in months ahead.
Eastward movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520 - Update 2022/11/01 Eastward movement ended and Westward movement has begun

--- Mars has begun Retrograde Movement as seen from Earth. On 2022/10/30 the reverse began.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

Light travel time today is between 4 and 5 minutes. Communications delay would be 8+ minutes round trip.

Mars has been moving Eastward as seen from Earth. Earth is passing "under" Mars. Movement is now to right (decreasing RA) 2022/11/05.
The online solar system display at the link below shows clearly how the Mars movement will occur in months ahead.
Eastward movement started 2020/09/08 Sol 520 - Update 2022/11/01 Eastward movement ended and Westward movement has begun

Minus prefix means Mars is approaching the Sun.  Plus prefix means Mars is moving away from the Sun.
The figure computed to the right of "Difference" is the rate of change of the distance to Sun. Increasing to Aphelion/Decreasing to Perihelion.

Today on Earth: 2022/11/09 Wednesday (Earth Date) Post Title: Today on Mars   [Perihelion occurred June 20, 2022 Earth Calendar]

Per http://www-mars.lmd.jussieu.fr/mars/tim … _time.html also see: in-the-sky.org for oppositon/perigee/aphelion

Martian Year: 36  Martian Month in 12 month format: 12 <<== The Astronomical month will increment when longitude reaches 360 degrees

Solar Longitude: 335.2 Sol Number: 623  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036623

Solar Longitude: 334.1 Sol Number: 621  Change in degrees is +.5 Julian date is: J0036621

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

Light travel time today is between 4 and 5 minutes. Communications delay would be 8+ minutes round trip.

Update 2022/10/23 According to www.hercampus.com, Retrograde movement began October 30, 2022.
That would mean I've been incorrectly reporting the Eastward movement of Mars (with respect to Earth)

--- Mars has begun Retrograde Movement as seen from Earth. On 2022/10/30 the reverse began.

Note: The curve of the path of Mars as seen against the background of stars is now a line trending up and back to the right
As of 2022/11/02, the curve of the path no longer insects the left border of the view, but instead intersects the right border.

Light travel time today is between 4 and 5 minutes. Communications delay would be 8+ minutes round trip.

Update 2022/10/23 According to www.hercampus.com, Retrograde movement began October 30, 2022.
That would mean I've been incorrectly reporting the Eastward movement of Mars (with respect to Earth)

Sol 625 is in Month 23 of a Proposed 24 month calendar. See Post 19 of Holidays topic for a summary. <<== Skip Day Sol 593
Month  23 extends from Sol 614 through 641. See post 82 of Holidays topic for current details. <<== There are 28 days in Month 23

Sol 625 is Thursday  in the Proposed Business calendar for Mars.  Sol 593 was a skip day on Earth. 630 is next expected skip day.

Refinements of the search include: Author: tahanson43206 Topic: Martian Politics and Economy (Specify Posts instead of Topics)
