Private Space Stations to Be Built Within 10 Years

Says New Survey http://www.spacefrontier.org Conducted by the Space Frontier Foundation, over two-thirds of survey respondents said they expect construction on private space stations to either be well under way or completed within the next decade.

OK so many say that going back to the moon is a waste and we need to go to Mars with the "Been there Done That" with regards to the moon. I look at its a rebuilding ot the infrastured needed to build rockets and stuff that we need to go to either place as all we have capability to only get currently to LEO at this point. With Nasa funded missions and none souly privately tasked on its own.

I would love to see a privately owned space station funded by the private industry which in my mind could happen with Bigelow's inflateables and Space x but whom would be paying for there products to be used to make this station and if the companies that have them did send them up who would be using the station is the next issue as to being able to pay either company for this station being built.

Ful article:

Private space stations will be constructed within the next 10 years, and escalating tensions between China, Russia and the United States will not result in a new space race, according to a new survey of the space industry conducted by the Space Frontier Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to opening the space frontier to permanent human settlement through free enterprise.

Over two-thirds of survey respondents said they expect construction on private space stations to either be well under way or completed within the next decade. However, 44% of respondents indicated it would take more than 15 years for humans to reach Mars.

"The private space industry is really heating up right now with increased levels of competition spurring a new push for innovation," said Jeff Feige, chairman of the board of the Space Frontier Foundation. "It doesn’t surprise me that everyone from investors to CEOs of companies involved in space are bullish on the construction of private space stations.”

Survey respondents were generally positive about the trends in the space industry, with 68% indicating that space startups are typically motivated by innovation rather than profit.

"While the survey reinforces what we are seeing in the industry today, it also points to one of the keys to the continued viability of the commercial space industry," said Feige. "Without clear business cases, private investment from investors looking for short and long term returns will be difficult to source."

The Space Frontier Foundation’s survey was conducted July 16-18 at the 2015 NewSpace conference in San Jose, CA. The 79 respondents represent a variety of space startups, investment professionals, advisors, thought leaders, government agencies and established companies in the space industry.

That's in 1989 dollars; in today's dollars that would be $750 billion. The "90 Day Report" included a space station as large as ISS, plus equivalents to SLS and Orion, but good luck getting corporate executives to deduct anything. Going to the Moon first means sticking to the "90 Day Report". So that means sticking to a plan that Congress will never approve.

As noted Congress keeps using the Nasa numbers and reports to judge how to go forward. Rather than asking for a price tag to do the same from Boeing and Space x to get the same results.

Re: Private Space Stations to Be Built Within 10 Years

Anyone have any word on this project at all....

Since Space x is only building rockets at this point I would say they are not in the race.

Seems no one is capable of doing this feat lone at this point in time.

Rocket Lab only lifts a few tons I think. Only Space X can do it. But do it quite easily.

Nasa and partners lost their chance to play nice in space a long time ago and with Russia wanting to pull out of the ISS to make a station with china there needs to be some game changing as its to costly currently for the benefit that we get from having a station.

While the ISS has been a great station it is not without political issues

Russian Political Problem?

NASA says Russian media allegations US astronaut drilled hole in ISS 'not credible'

https://www.spacedaily.com/reports/NASA … e_999.html
The claims made by Russian media that NASA Astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor had a nervous breakdown and damaged a Russian spacecraft to get home are not credible, Kathy Lueders, who is leading NASA's human spaceflight program, said at a press conference on Friday.

Russia's TASS recently published a story, citing an unnamed source in the Russian Space Agency Roscosmos, that claimed Aunon-Chancellor had an emotional breakdown in space and she made a microfracture in the Russian spacecraft to return early during a mission in 2018.

"Absolutely," Lueders said when asked whether NASA will defend its astronaut. "Our NASA crews perform their missions with professionalism and integrity. She [Aunon-Chancellor] is a well-respected crew member who has served her country and made a valuable contribution. I stand behind her and her professional conduct and I did not find this accusation credible."

Re: Private Space Stations to Be Built Within 10 Years

I followed the link provided by Mars_B4_Moon and found this:

https://spacenews.com/op-ed-unlocking-n … -in-space/

The months ahead should prove to be just as exciting as billionaire Elon Musk and SpaceX will soon launch civilian astronauts aboard Crew Dragon, along with efforts from other companies like Axiom. This unprecedented moment calls for congratulating Bezos and Branon — as well as Blue Origin and Virgin Galactic — for the courageous firsts of many catalysts for an extraordinary future.

Michael Lencioni is CEO of Stellar Solutions, a global aerospace engineering services provider to commercial, defense, intelligence, civil and international sectors.

This article originally appeared in the August 2021 issue of SpaceNews magazine.

Could someone do a bit of sleauthing to find out more about Michael Lencioni?

While the article he wrote might be regarded as on the light side for public viewing, the name he has given his company is certainly ambitious, and his activities or at least goals might be interesting for forum readers.

The US, Russia, Japan, Europe? Could they have a new station in 4 years
maybe China could sell them one

NASA awards funding to three commercial space station concepts

https://spacenews.com/nasa-awards-fundi … -concepts/

The largest award, at $160 million, went to a team led by Nanoracks and includes Voyager Space and Lockheed Martin. Those companies announced a space station concept called Starlab Oct. 21 that could be ready as soon as 2027.

A second award, valued at $130 million, went to a team led by Blue Origin for the Orbital Reef space station announced Oct. 25. That project includes Boeing, Redwire and Sierra Space, among others, with a goal of entering initial operations in the latter half of the 2020s.

The third award, worth $125.6 million, went to a previously undisclosed concept from Northrop Grumman. That proposed station would leverage the company’s work on the Cygnus cargo spacecraft, Mission Extension Vehicle satellite servicing program and the Habitation and Logistics Outpost module it is building for NASA’s lunar Gateway.

Rick Mastracchio, director of business development for human exploration at Northrop Grumman, said in a call with reporters that a single launch could place in orbit a facility able to support four people, with the ability to expand. “This allows for low risk and rapid deployment,” he said. The station, which he said doesn’t yet have a name, is being developed with Dynetics, with others to be announced in the near future.

Axiom said in a statement that it did not submit a CLD proposal. “With active hardware development on pace to meet a late 2024 delivery to orbit of the first Axiom Station module and strong support from the market already in hand, Axiom declined to bid on CLD,” the company said.

Re: Private Space Stations to Be Built Within 10 Years

None of the companies that are capable to lofting station modules as well as building them do not need to wait for anyone's approval, so get to it.

The Northrup Grumman is the old guard in a new space industry that is looking for it to be paid for before they build and put it up there rather than just building and placing it in orbit under there control to use as they already posses the module building ability and launch capability.

By building it and controlling it they can charge for its use...

Re: Private Space Stations to Be Built Within 10 Years

The construction of the Chinese station is based on the experience gained from its precursors, Tiangong-1 and Tiangong-2. The first module, the Tianhe ("Harmony of the Heavens") core module, was launched on 29 April 2021. Regarding the participation of foreign astronauts, CMSA has repeatedly communicated their support for such proposals. During the press conference of the Shenzhou 12 mission, Zhou Jianping, the chief designer of China Manned Space Program explained that multiple countries had expressed their wish to participate. He told journalists that the future participation of foreign astronauts "will be guaranteed".

NASA’s Artemis Moon Landing Program: Launches, Timeline, and More
https://gizmodo.com/nasa-artemis-progra … 1848906821

Not since 1972 has a human set foot on the Moon, but NASA is aiming to change that through its ambitious Artemis program. The lunar missions could begin in late 2022, so we’ve assembled this guide to keep you informed and up to date.

NASA and its partners, both private and public, are in the midst of developing a slew of new technologies. The Orion spacecraft that will take astronauts to the Moon and back is already developed, but practically everything else still needs to be built. And that includes NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS)—a 322-foot-tall (98-meter) behemoth that NASA calls its “Mega Moon rocket.”

When is the Artemis 2 launch?

Artemis 2, in which a Orion capsule complete with human crew will travel to the Moon and back without landing, is currently scheduled to happen no earlier than May 2024. The mission will be virtually identical to Artemis 1, save for the presence of four NASA astronauts.

When is the Artemis 3 launch?

Artemis 3 is currently targeted for no earlier than 2025. The plan is to land a man and woman near the Moon’s south polar region, where they will spend nearly a full week exploring the lunar surface. The two remaining crew members will stay aboard the Lunar Gateway, which itself will be connected to Orion. Should all go as planned, an unpressurized rover and other equipment will be placed on the surface in advance of the mission. At least four spacewalks are planned, with a priority placed on the search for water ice.

When is the Artemis 4 launch?

The fourth Artemis mission is currently planned for 2026. Four astronauts will launch to the Lunar Gateway, where they will continue to build-out the lunar outpost. The mission will deliver the European Space Agency’s I-Hab habitat module to Gateway, which will operate in a unique near-rectilinear halo orbit. I-Hab will eventually serve as the main habitat for astronauts when staying on board Gateway. A lunar landing is not expected to happen during this mission.

When is the Artemis 5 launch?

Artemis 5 should launch in 2027. The plan is to send four astronauts to Gateway and then deploy two crew members to the lunar surface. The astronauts will once again explore the south polar region of the Moon.

The mission will also seek to deliver ESA’s ESPRIT (European System Providing Refueling, Infrastructure and Telecommunications) to Gateway. ESPIRIT “will supply enhanced communications, refuelling and a window somewhat like the European-built Cupola observatory on the International Space Station,” according to ESA.

What will happen next?

Artemis missions 6 through 11 are still in the proposal stage, so we’re not entirely certain as to when they’ll launch or what will be involved.

' That said, the Gateway will need an airlock, so if Artemis 6 is to happen, the delivery and installation of this component will be be a goal. These late Artemis missions will expand in both scope and ambition and will likely see the installation of a lunar habitats, a pressurized mobile home, among other elements designed to enable humanity’s sustained presence on the Moon. By this stage, lunar adventures could last as long as 45 days.

Should the Artemis program unfold as expected, NASA can then plan for a crewed trip to Mars. The current expectation is for a crew to land on the Red Planet in the late 2030s or early 2040s. '

Shenzhou-14 crewed mission arrives at Chinese space station

China is also considering making the station available for tourist visits and will open Tiangong to commercial missions.

The country also plans to launch a co-orbiting optical telescope module, named Xuntian, in late 2023. It will be capable of docking with Tianhe for repairs, maintenance, refueling and upgrades, and aims to survey 40 percent of the sky across a decade.

Xuntian features a two-meter-diameter aperture and a field of view more than 300 times greater than the 32-year-old Hubble Space Telescope.

Russian officials have stated an interest in deeper human spaceflight cooperation with China while threatening to end its involvement in the International Space Station.

However, the 41.5 degree inclination of the Tiangong space station makes it very difficult for a Soyuz to launch to Tiangong from Russian territory, while ESA’s Kourou, which was being considered for hosting crewed Soyuz missions, is no longer available to Russia in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine

Re: Private Space Stations to Be Built Within 10 Years

An ESA advisory committee has recommended Europe should independently develop its own space station when the ISS retires, and develop its own lunar base independently of NASA's Artemis plans.

https://spacenews.com/advisory-group-ba … pproaches/

"Europe should design and implement a European Space Mission to establish an independent European presence in Earth orbit, lunar orbit, on the Moon, and beyond, including a European Commercial LEO Station, Cargo and Crew Capabilities for the Gateway and the Moon, and sustained presence on the lunar surface."

It's worth noting although this comes from ESA's own self-appointed advisory group, we don't know how much of its recommendations will be followed. However, ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher has been talking lately about the need for big changes at ESA.
