#1176 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Nuclear Propulsion - The best way for space travel » 2002-12-27 17:27:44

so if you surrounded the reactor with a water barrier, wouldnt you negate the waste heat?

#1177 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Nuclear Propulsion - The best way for space travel » 2002-12-27 17:06:28

Now, im ignorant in this field, but couldnt you create an artificial water barrier around the reactor to absorb heat, that isnt part of an ecosystem?  could you also then use this heated water to produce hydroelectric or steam power (forgive me if i dont know how water power works)?

#1178 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Pathways to Enlightened Colonization - How not to be a space imperialist » 2002-12-26 21:25:06

er, throw out everything.  except, that we should use resources wisely.  socialism ends up hurting people more in the end than capitalism, imho.  yes, its important to conserve resources, but not to look at them, and say, "OOOOh thats nice, lets leave it."

the space treaties we have now suck.  they should be trashed.  private property is important, but information should be public and uncopyrighted.

You probably couldnt tell a mexican from a venezualan.  your ignorance is blaring.

#1180 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-26 20:15:25

for the record, i think youre being an idiot.

if i cared about proving myself to you, who for all i know, could be a truck driver from michigan, i MIGHT give you proof of what ive said.  however, im not going to give out personal information over the internet just to show somebody on the other side of a monitor that im telling the truth.

and pretend?  i dont need to.  ive already gotten into gifted programs, including johns hopkins sat program.  but, if you want to belittle me, when all you are is a know-it-all freshman who talks down to everyone, go ahead.

#1181 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2002-12-26 20:13:07

switzerland is a lot easier to run because the world doesnt hate them, and they have a FAR smaller population...but they have a more democratic system, i think thats what auqakah is getting at.

#1182 Re: Planetary transportation » Revolutionary way to explore other worlds - A wind riding rover » 2002-12-26 20:08:40

according to zubrin, the methane would be easy to make...i think he said it was the same principle as the sabatier reactor.

#1183 Re: Interplanetary transportation » orbital facilities » 2002-12-25 20:17:39

from what zubrin says, no.  according to rocket science...it would take more fuel and time to go to the moon first, and there would be no advantage from a moon launch.

#1184 Re: Not So Free Chat » Merry Christmas - :-) » 2002-12-24 22:42:45

Happy Holidays everyone, whatever you celebrate!  big_smile

#1185 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Anti-matter - as a method of propulsion. » 2002-12-24 20:13:48

if we could design an anti-matter production facility on a ship, it would be an amazing boon...as far as i know, it would be the only type of propellant you could maufacture in flight...just filter in normal atoms, and take out the antimatter.

theoretically, couldnt you produce endless amounts of antimatter in flight?  thus, wouldnt the propellant weight be minimal?

#1186 Re: Not So Free Chat » Science Fair Ideas - Impart your Wisdom... » 2002-12-24 18:36:27

i had wanted to do something on martian soil, but i couldnt get my hands on anything like it...

i've wanted to make a fuel cell, i might get the materials together in the remainder of my vacation.  ive also wanted to build a reactor...if i could id have a much greater understanding of how it works  big_smile

#1187 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » soil as a building material on Mars? - Zubrin's brick building ideas » 2002-12-24 18:34:30

I like the idea of terrestrial and martian plastics and kevlar better than soil...if i remember right, zubrin wanted to use soil as bricks, or radiation shielding.  bricks would be okay, but i still like plastics better, more flexible, mobile, less time to deploy, and cheaper.

#1188 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-24 18:24:25

i dont expect you to believe me, and i really dont care...whether or not you believe me doesnt make it more or less true.

#1189 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-24 18:23:09

bull. a "few"?  you have no clue how many illegals we find, and overlook.

#1190 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2002-12-24 14:35:54

We also overlook millions of illegals every day.  Our economy would suck if we deported all the illegals in this country.  in a sense, we need them as much as they need us.

#1191 Re: Planetary transportation » Revolutionary way to explore other worlds - A wind riding rover » 2002-12-24 14:33:40

couldnt a rocketplane using a nuclear engine, or methane fuel (which could be made whenever it lands) provide more flexibility and speed?

#1192 Re: Meta New Mars » 3000 posts » 2002-12-24 11:44:53

Well, cant you back up what you have now, just in case?  and if anything goes wrong, you can just restore the old data.

#1193 Re: Meta New Mars » 3000 posts » 2002-12-24 11:13:17

Weclome back Adrian!  I read some of your journals...very interesting stuff!  Any luck with the biosphere?

#1194 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » "Star Wars" missile defense - practicle? » 2002-12-24 07:30:41

change wont happen until people in our congress and senate care more about accomplishing something, and less about being reelected.

our system needs someone who really cares about this country, and not about their public image.

#1195 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-24 06:45:25

No, working in a defense contracting facility counts as working in a defense contracting facility.  im not going to divulge the name for personal reasons, but if i really needed to, i could prove it with my knowledge of the parts we made.

of course, you can try to belittle what i said.  it still stands, i worked at a defense plant.

#1196 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2002-12-24 06:42:26

uh. no it doesnt.  your vote counts more than mine.  everybodys vote should count the same.  nont 3x to 2x.  my state should have a proportionally larger vote.  what, having less people makes your state better?  more important?  if more people live in new york, new york should have more say.  and like ive said, candidates dont campaign to cities, they campaign to segments of the population as a whole: farmers, women, blacks, etc.

and they would almost have to go to the rural areas, because one candidate is bound to campaign there for that vote.  if more people want a candidate, it shouldnt matter where those people are from.  and thats just the opposite of what happened in the last election.

#1197 Re: Planetary transportation » Crawlers - Segmented multilegged rovers » 2002-12-23 21:15:01

i still think for heavy movement, treads are best.  they can handle any terrain, and you can have them conform to almost any grade.  if you need to, you can made them spiked, and spikes would be more effctive on treads than on legs...you never lift treads, you use the spikes to grab and push, while on legs, you lift them, so half their value is lost.

legs might be very effective for fast exploration, however.

#1198 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-23 19:39:20

having worked in a defense contracting facility, yes.  i am more connected than a colorado farmboy.

and im no socialite.  you cant slap a liberal term on whoever disagrees with you.

#1199 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2002-12-23 19:37:59

because my vote should count just as much as somebody from colorado's.  it wont, because my state will vote one way, and beyond that one vote, it doesnt matter.

the electoral system is crap.  if it went the other way, the republicans, the ones who spent $200 million to prove our president had sex with an intern, would have shown the country what being whiney bitches really means.

you want to talk about whiney bitches?  talk to the states who were upset that they didnt have as many people.  boo-hoo.  in a sports game, the team with the higher score at the end wins, not the team who won each quarter.

you speak boldly about the majority in other topics, yet you slither around it in this one.  why should the majority of our country not be the measuring stick for our president?  it should.  its not fair that millions of people who voted for gore didnt get their votes counted.

#1200 Re: Human missions » Paying For Mars - How to afford to send humans to Mars » 2002-12-23 19:32:57

loans.  prove that you can make money off of the enterprise, and you can find someone that will give you money.  its called venture capital.  make it a long term loan, with as low interest as possible.  if you use the money wisely and get everything in place, it should be fairly easy to pay off the money with profits.
