#1 Re: Mars Society International » The X-Prize - Could MS go for this? » 2003-01-30 05:52:33

I would not think the Mars Society would go for something like that.. I agree with you that it is a great oppertunity to get some PR for us but it requires a good ammount of capital to construct a space-faring vehicle.  To put things in perspective, the American X-15 cost roughly $300 million.  Yes, some of that was research money but it would still not be cheap unless we could find an aerospace corporation willing to donate a vehicle..

#2 Re: Planetary transportation » Air Transportation on Mars - Gravity's affect on Air travel on Mars » 2003-01-04 11:44:14

Thankyou for answering my questions... Very interesting idea with the Helios Helicopter.. Although it would present a problem with bringing something like that to Mars, as It's size would be a problem

#3 Re: Other space advocacy organizations » The Ares Concordant - A non-proit mars colony. » 2002-12-29 12:45:41

I used to look at alot of these websites but after a while of seeing so many that you just know have no future I have basically stopped.  I hate to criticize that group there but their one of hundreds of groups started by someone with a spirit of adventure.  I applaud their initiative, but if their true goal is to go to Mars, I suggest they combine efforts with the Society to make that happen much quicker...

Just my two cents

#4 Re: Mars Society International » Creating a Mars Society Chapter - Any ideas onhow to create a Mars chapter » 2002-12-29 12:41:10

I was wondering similar things.  I have read over all of the materials on the Society website for starting a High School Chapter and looked through the prepared presentation and script but still want some more info before I go ahead with anything.  I live in Connecticut myself, and according to the Society website there isnt a Connecticut Chapter... So can you more experienced members help me out also..

Thanks

#5 Re: Planetary transportation » Air Transportation on Mars - Gravity's affect on Air travel on Mars » 2002-12-29 12:36:38

Just a heads up, I am not a professional scientist(as I doubt most posting here are).  So bear with me...

Id just like to start some discussion on the possibilities of using air transportation vehicles somewhat similar to what we use on Earth on Mars.. Now ofcourse it would be quite expensive and impractical to transport them there.  But that set aside, how would Mars's lower gravity then Earth affect the possibility of air travel as we know it on Mars..

Ideas..?

#6 Re: Space Policy » NASA Budget Allocation - I have a question about this... » 2002-12-29 12:32:02

I've been wondering what person(s) or bodies of people are specifically responsible for the distribution and allocation of the NASA Budget?  A Committee perhaps, If you have a link to a site of such a Commitee I would be very happy if you could provide me with that..

Thanks

#7 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » A Few Insulting Remarks About NovaMarsollia - The latest fruitcake around here » 2002-12-29 12:24:18

I completely agree with what you've said..  This whole thing about Mars and other celestial bodies being owned by everyone is a bunch of B.S.  In my opinion, Mars is owned by whoever gets there first and stays there.  Others have compared this to 1500's exploration and that relates to my point...

#8 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Mars as an alternative to War. - Can space exploration replace War? » 2002-12-29 12:19:04

This is indeed a very interesting concept of Mars replacing war as a machine to create new technology.  However, It needs a boost from private ventures, as the governments of this world have proven they are not capable of going to Mars, atleast not for another century or so they may claim.  If private ventures such as the Society were to go to Mars, I believe that would cause a boost in interest by the superpowers in exploration.  And in response to what other people have said about the UN, the UN is a large part of what is slowing down our technologial innovations...
