I think there are a few different ways to look at this, Ok yes they are a bit out dated and a New Design is in order, I think that the Shuttles are just the beginning of what is yet to come. They do need to build new Shuttles that will be able to Take off and land on their own, The piggy back style of getting the Shuttles into the Atmosphere is slightly behind the times and they should have been able by now to develop a new type of propulsion/fuel to escape Earth's Gravity. But I don't think the Program and the Shuttles have been a waste, I just think they wanted to perfect the use of them. I just hope this accident doesn't set the program back.
Just like any form of transporation there will always be accidents, I hate to say it but things like this happening are the only way for these pioneer's to find ways to correct and perfect these venues. My heart goes out to all the Family's of the accident victims, they definitely are pioneer's for the Future of The SPACE program.
Can't forget "Forbidden Planet", with Walter Pidgeon, Leslie Nielson, Anne Francis and of course Robby The Robot, that was like the God-Father of most present day SciFi movies, it pretty much had it all.
I also like "The Day The Earth Stood Still" with Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Billy Gray and of course Gort. "Klaatu Barada Nitko". Those were good SciFi movie's.
I wouldn't even put LOTR in this category, LOTR should be in the exclusive (Fantasy) Category not SciFi.
Hey I have another Idea, we can make this a Baseball Game, there are 9 innings and 9 Planets, so because the "Powers That Be" are saying that Pluto and Mercury are of sub-standard "Planet Status" we will rename them, Pluto will now be called the Tampa Bay Devil Rays & Mercury will be called the Montreal Expos-But since Baseball has struck a new deal with can't consider Pluto & Mercury for Planet Contraction until after 2006! We can charge NASA and other space agencies with some sort of Luxury tax that will be spread out to give the lesser Planets like Pluto & Mercury equal time for more study & research! What do you guys think?

I still think this solution is better!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SETHMCKINESS !!!
Hope you have a great day, and many more of them to come!
[Rather than make a new thread for every new birthday,
I just grabbed this one because it's the most recent
birthday thread.
How would everyone feel about using just this one section
for all future birthday greetings? Or if you'd all rather do
your own thing, that's fine too.]
Well this post was made to honor Dr. Smith of Lost in Space Fame who suddenly passed away and had a Birthday 3 days later. I was hoping more people who were fans of the show and of his antics would have commented. But I see nothing wrong with using "MY" post as a Birthday greeting point. Either that or you can start a new thread. So to end this Shaun, you have "MY" permission.
I mean't to post this earlier, I want to take this time to wish Dr. Smith (Jonathan Harris) of Lost in Space fame a Happy 85th Birthday, Nov. 6th 1917. Now the sad news, he died this past Sunday from a blood clot to his heart while receiving treatment for chronic back pain, remember his "Delicate back was a Disaster area"! But I would like to take this time to celebrate his life as probably the most beloved person we loved to hate. The Dr. Smith character was one of the best of all time. Here's a little Trivia for ya, In the credits of LIS, Harris had his name as "Special Guest Star", this is a title we see very often on alot of TV shows, he is actually given offical credit for creating that Title.
So if any of you Lost In Space fans have any Special memories of Dr. Smith's antics please share them!

Looks like we have some new finds!!!
*About a year ago I was watching a special regarding a cartoonist who had passed away. He had done a lot of animation work for the Warner Brothers "Looney Tunes" series in particular...but I can't remember his name! I can remember the photos of him in my mind's eye; maybe his name will come back to me.
Anyway, he drew a cartoon, intended to be a series, called "John Carter On Mars." I'm quite sure the character's name was John Carter. I posted about this to the civ-culture mailing list last year, when I was subscribed to it.
The cartoon was drawn up in either the 1930s or 1940s, and shows John Carter galloping around red Marsian hills on a horse, etc. It was very pretty animation. Apparently the idea never "took" with studio execs.
Does anyone know more about this? I'll try to track down more information and try to jog my memory more...wish me luck!

P.S.: Added with Edit feature:

I've found references to John Carter ala 1970 cartoon features, and a "pulp fiction" article of 1912 [Google search...just one example above], but I haven't the time to pore through all the web links and I don't see anything relative to the short-lived ANIMATED cartoon from Warner Brothers.
You must be talking about the Very Famous cartoonist Chuck Jones.
I'm leaving a link that should be of interest to all of you Plutonians out there! Yo, you have a neighbor!!!
This is the idiot that they had on the news today saying he can prove that man never set foot on the moon. I've also included some fun related articles. Like I said in my first post I find the whole thing very funny. Also thought that him getting punched out by Aldrin was great.

I find the Wild West story on Mars interesting.
Maybe SOME of you have covered the Moon Hoax in the past, but the new evidence came up today and I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about the New stuff, not what you had gone over in the past, also if you don't want to discuss it or if any subject bores you, you do have the option of ignoring the post and replying to one that does interest you.
What do you all think of the Guy that has been on the news today saying that he has PROOF that the whole man reaching the moon was all a hoax? I know this rumor has been around for years, but now he says he has more proof. What are your opinions on this and research to other Planets.I find it quite funny.
I think it's great that Bass wants to be the youngest person ever into Space. He went to space camp as a kid and said his life-long dream was about to be full-filled. I just read his latest interview and he said he was disappointed about not making it on this trip and that "He will work very hard to make this a reality". My problem here is that he keeps relying on sponsors to pay for his trip, I think that if he wants to go to space so bad that he cough up the money himself or cover the additional needed! I know he must have made well over 20 million bucks while with his very popular pop-band N'sync, I believe he should Put up or Shut-up!

Wow, we can have real fun with this one. So why don't we relieve any of the Planets of their "Planet" Status if they can't support life as we know it. We can say that Earth is the only real planet because it supports life. We can call the others Dead Masses that are just caught in the Suns gravity field. We should elevate the standard to become a Planet, as I said earlier the main standard being able to support life.
(Leave Pluto alone)

I'm not sure of the exact dating method they used on the meteorite but they likely used a radiometric type dating method where they measure how much decay has occured in certain isotopes. What's especially interesting about the rock though is that it's fractures and grains point to not only it being melted and recrystallized multiple times (at least two, once during it's initial formation and once after it was blasted off the surface of Mars) but that at sometime before it landed on Earth it had experienced aqueous alteration. Anyhow, any gas pockets in the meteorite would have retained the atmosphere of its planet at the time of it being ejected. The atmosphere retained in the rock though might differ a little due to decay of some of the elements. If Mars had no photosynthetic life to convert co2 into oxygen on a big scale prior to the meteor's departure a few million years ago, the atmosphere of Mars and Earth would be very different.
That's all very interesting and I thank you for your detailed reply, I guess we'll never really know all the answers until we have a manned trip or have some sort of robotic craft bring back actual rock samples of the Red Planet and compare them to what has been found here on Earth. I just hope we're all alive to see this happen. Isn't Mars supposed to be closer to Earth by next August then it has been in the last 60,000 years? Too bad they couldn't have a Craft ready by then to take and bring back samples before Mars orbit is too far away again for such a quick mission.
[B]Thanks Phobos, one other question, can it be determined how old the meteorite is and how long ago it landed on Earth?
My main question here is, if the "Mars" rocks are old enough, do the "Sealed" air-pockets in the Mars rocks that you described still contain the actual atmosphere of the Red Planet at the time it flew off to Earth? So for example if the Mars Rocks are millions of years old do the "Sealed Air-pockets" contain the atmosphere from millions of years ago if it is sealed? Were or could the Planets from millions or even billions of years ago (Mars & Earth) might have had more "simular" atmosphere's in formation until they developed there own distinctive characteristics.[B]
In Antarctica, alot of the research they claim they are doing was to support life on other Planets particularly Mars. They would find those rocks saying they were from Mars, can anyone actually vouch that Rocks or pepples from Mars actually blew off the Planet and landed in Antarctica or other parts of Earth? If so how can this be and since no craft has ever flown back to Earth from the Red planet how can these claims be really true? Soil samples?
