#1 Re: Unmanned probes » Cassini-Huygens - Cassini-Huygens Discussion » 2004-07-01 06:40:10

What a great day for science!  However, I foolishly assumed that the Huygens probe would be dropped sooner than January 2005!

#3 Re: Not So Free Chat » Giant Spiders - Real or Science Fiction? » 2004-04-21 07:02:29

I saw those pictures of the camel spiders.  I read on snopes.com that it was a hoax.  They don't get that big.

Greetings, MadCap!  Looking forward to your posts.

#5 Re: Exploration to Settlement Creation » Mars Design & Architecture - ...(how do you visualize it?) » 2004-04-17 19:15:00

Mars will be the new cradle of humanity.  There definitely should be a new style of architecture.  Something strictly for Mars.  I don't know enough about architecture but I think a new style will develop because of the environment there.

#6 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » "Trekkie Communicator" Ready To Go » 2004-04-17 19:09:12

But did you see one of the links on the left side of the page?
This is not the exact headline but Patrick Stewart doesn't care too much about space exploration!  Talk about irony.

???

#7 Re: Unmanned probes » Cassini-Huygens - Cassini-Huygens Discussion » 2004-04-09 06:39:02

Are there any probes being dropped into Saturn?

#8 Re: Not So Free Chat » 102,004 A.D. - where will we be 100,000 years from now? » 2004-03-29 07:36:37

I voted for number 3.   If our past had developed like the one in Clarke's 3001 novel, we probably would reach option 4 with no problems.

#9 Re: Human missions » Is Prometheus a Nuclear Ramjet? - A nuclear launch vehicle. Impossible? » 2004-02-20 07:37:43

I agree, Tim.  I always wondered why NASA never did talk with the Navy before about reactors.

#10 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Nuclear, Pro & Con » 2004-02-04 07:55:50

Cindy,

To get both sides of the issue, I suggest that you look at the [http://www.nuclearspace.com/]NuclearSpace and [http://www.space4peace.org/]Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space

Of course I'm biased to Nuclear Space!   big_smile

#11 Re: Space Policy » Bush Sets Wrong Goal? » 2004-01-15 08:48:24

Michael,

I saw a little bit of Dr. Zubrin last night on Lou Dobbs.  In just my opinion, he did not seem upset that NASA will do the Moon first before Mars.  Don't get me wrong, he still gave his Mars Direct pitch, but I didn't see him as being extremely upset about it.

#12 Re: Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity » 2004-01-09 21:28:12

The rovers currently will be operational for about 90 days.  Just imagined if they were nuke powered.   Oh the things that NASA could do!

#13 Re: Human missions » Mars 24 Project - To Mars with Existing Commercial Rockets » 2004-01-09 21:06:58

RobS,

Is it possible for you to put this in a .pdf?  I'm getting back from vacation and am currently skimming through the boards.

#14 Re: Human missions » Some Thoughts on Mars Direct - Article on The Space Review Site » 2003-12-08 07:31:40

The author brought up some very good points.  The most feasible way to get to Mars right now would be an international effort.

#15 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Using the shuttle's external tanks as spacecraft » 2003-11-07 07:56:28

Skylab was launched over 30 yrs ago using parts from Saturn and Apollo equipment.  Too bad that we didn't use a shuttle ET for the next station instead of ISS.

Using the ET and converting it to a space station can be done!

Here's a link about Skylab:  Our First Space Station

#17 Re: Unmanned probes » Europa » 2003-11-07 07:45:05

An organization called Plus Ultra Technologies has an excellent idea for a Europa mission.  It calls for a nuclear drill to drill through the ice and then launch a small remote control sub.

#18 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Voyager 1 Nearing the Heliosheath » 2003-11-07 07:39:01

This maybe off topic, but is Pioneer 10 also at the Heliopause just going in the opposite direction?  I believe it was launched in the same year as Voyager 1.

#19 Re: Human missions » The Case for the Moon » 2003-11-07 07:36:40

Whether it's Mars or the Moon (preferably Mars), I just hope when we do finally go it's not just for show.  No flags and footprints!  The momentum is building for either one of the missions.

#20 Re: Human missions » Zubrin's Testimony before congress » 2003-10-30 07:29:25

I caught probably the last half of the entire thing.  I was doing some reading for school when Sean O'Keefe and ADM Gehman were speaking.  It was funny when (I forget the senator's name) asked Mr. O'Keefe about trying to send up a shuttle to rescue the Columbia crew.  The senator kept pressing him for an answer and Mr. O'Keefe would start to answer and the senator just cut him off in mid sentence.  Mr. O'Keefe just rolled his eyes and they ended their part of the testimony.

All the speakers after that were great.  I don't get to see much of Dr. Zubrin but he's fun to watch.  His enthusiasm is very contaigous.  It was very interesting to watch the exchange between Sen McCain and the senator after him.  The second senator had very good questions and he seemed surprised himself that the Mars Direct mission has not occurred.  Again, it was great Dr. Zubrin, Dr. Huntress, Dr.(?) Woods, and Mr. Tumlinson.  I hope something contructive comes from this!!

#21 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Small Nuclear Reactor proposal - Size of a large spruce tree » 2003-10-22 06:54:48

This reactor needs to be tested fully for terrestrial and space use immediately.  All you guys have mentioned great ideas.  We need to get to Mars and the rest of the solar system NOW!

#22 Re: Life support systems » Growing plants on Mars » 2003-10-22 06:46:04

I had forgotten about kudzu.  I grew up in the southeast and remember that stuff covering old houses.  I wonder, if it is able to be grown on Mars, would it grow just as fast.  I did not know that you could eat it.  Very good idea!

#24 Re: Space Policy » Space Exploration Act of 2003 - Petition Congress to Support H.R. 3057 » 2003-10-07 19:20:27

Forgot to add, very good idea for the site.   I hope that there are lots of people signing this.  What do you do once someone signs the petition?  Where does it go?

#25 Re: Space Policy » Space Exploration Act of 2003 - Petition Congress to Support H.R. 3057 » 2003-10-07 19:15:56

Mark, I hate to be a nit picker but the word solar is misspelled in the petition.

quote:   "Expand our knowledge of the universe and our place within it. Did life ever take hold on Mars? How, exactly, did our solor system form?"
