Is there any compelling reason not to use a rail gun to launch loads of solid nitrogen from earth to Mars? a correctly designed or large enough nitrogen capsule could even slam into the planet's surface and impart heat as well as nitrogen. You could build a power plant along with the project and sell power to finance ongoing maintenance and operations. Not really a solution but a start.
Has the drying up of the Aral Sea caused a noticeable impact on earth's environment over a global scale?
So for 1% of 1 year's economic product we could have the Battlesar Galactica approach to Mars exploration. Not quite sure with the dollar weakening while that program's cost was figured in dollars, but still it looks a whole lot more reasonable when seen that way. I agree about the incremental approach of taking small donations for a privately funded approach.
The poll has been added. Sorry about the delay, but my internet access is pretty sketchy at times.
Yar, but in truth aren't a lot of places in Europe and Japan up against it like that now or will be in the near future? I don't know how it is now, but I remember folks I knew in the UK a few years ago talking about living with their parents well into their 20s because renting an apartment cost so much. Maybe I'm jsut biased because I'd rather live in an arcology thana suburb.
I'm pretty sure it's not as analogous as I want it to be, but surely supersonic planes go through a similar situation just before passing the speed of sound. Each indivual moving part doesn't need as much power put into it as the aircraft as a whole even though it'd be breaking the speed of sound (as much as your man would be breaking the speed of light) before the aircraft when it travels above the difference in the same direction as the aircraft is going.
I think the religious people would be the most likely. Strong belief in a power above you does wonders for getting people to work together. Religious societies like the Hutterites who are communist manage to make communism work a lot better than any secular group that try to go down that path from what I've seen.
Genoforming?
The o following e is probably something we should avoid if we want it to be easy to pronounce now that I think about it.
Isreal should give the parts of the West Bank they don't want to Jordan and annex the rest. Then they should give Gaza to the Egyptians. The world's proven for decades now that it doesn't care how Arab nations treat the Palestinians living in them. If Isreal made it clear it was never going to willingly recreate a Palestinian state maybe some fo the less antagonistic Arab nations would allow their Palestinian refugees to assimilate which wouold lead ot the more extreme nations doing the same.
Read a lot since I lasted posted here, but the most recent was The Dark Tower by Stephen King. I thought it was a great ending to a great fantasy series. It's got me intrigued enough into his other books that I'm going to read the related ones outside The Dark Tower cycle. It's a bit sad and limiting to his audience that these books are in the horror section of the bookstore when they're fantasy and science fiction. I get the feeling a lot of his work shouldn't be classified as horror, but it is anyways. I think it'd sell even better if they got the non-horror stuff out of the horror section.
I'm not about to vote for Ron Paul, but he does support it if you're a fan of his. I wish we'd return to a gold standard or something, and although specifically I'm referring to the US I think it'd help out any nation not doing it.
1. Skip the hybird and get a motorcyle. They're fairly cheap used and you can get a hybrid or a normal car (normal car + motorcyle probably price competitive with the hybrid alone) for when you need to carry something or when there's bad whether. Motorcyle plus whatever for most people will average out to higher mpg than a hybrid alone if you use the motorcycle when possible.
2. Require all lawnmowers, weedeaters, atvs, and the like sold after say 5 years from now be electric with the ability to recharge from your standard 120V outlet. They're light enough that you'd get substantial battery life without recharge out of one. This would probably be more than a person would use them at one time anyways. I don't know if it'd save much money, but I've always thought it wierd folks focus on getting electric cars when we could make all these normally gas powered things elctric while maintaining a significant operating time on one full charge.
There's some truth to that. Any dieas? I think there should be a term to set genetic engineering for the purpose of making it easier to live in an unfriendly environment aside from genetic engineering for more mundane uses such as improving general health or something like that.
So would writing/calling Senators/Representatives be any use considering I live in a state with a NASA facility? They've got to be automatic votes for increasing its budget right?
Thanks. Now I see.
I like that they tried to build a solar sail, but I couldn't care less about space science that doesn't serve human exploration and colonization efforts.
Hopefully it goes well!
The Tuesday of the first full week in November if I remember correctly.
Yar they don't pay a lot of attention to space. You'd think with the popularity global warming has now though they'd pay more attention to space since it offers the proposed methods of cooling the earth in a few years. Even with that though most poeple are only considering recycling, raising emissions standards, and the like. That's okay, but if the problem is global warming then the solution is global cooling not reduced pollution.
Over and over again in the terraforming forum as well as elsewhere it comes up how in a lot of situations how genetic modifications to humans and other species would (hopefully in the near future) be a lot easier than terraforming. I want to put forth that the term "areoforming" be used for this from now on. Maybe it's not the best term, but proposed terraforming often still leaves places very different from earth. Plus it'd keep Mars in people's minds. But discuss and since it's creating a new scientific term I thought this might be the best place for it.
Can someone explain to me how the Russian shttle would be useful for a manned Mars mission? It's bigger than the US version, and it'd be newer. But without a landing strip and launch facilities on Mars I don't how you could hope t land it or get your crew back to earth.
Cow is a bigger version of a goat. When (and if) you expand your base to larger operation it would make sense to bring cows.
What about musk oxen? They're goats and not bovines. I wonder if they could adapt to a diverse diet. They can also tolerate cold so you wouldn't need to expend as much energy on heating their enclosure. Plus the hair they grow during the winter is one of the warmest natural fibers so you make clothes out it, and it falls out naturally so you don't even have to bother shearing them.
I don't think cows are that bad, but I think water buffalo would be better by far. They're stronger than oxen from all reports I've read. I remember someone here proposing digging holes to use as fish tanks or something along that line. Buffalo could possibly be used for a source of simple musclepower in churning the ponds to add oxygen or heat, or possibly some other application requiring low power. Their skin makes leather so thick that it can be cut in half thickwise as to render leather normally thick. They can be milked and eaten.
From what I've read here Mars' gravity would be simulated on the ISS. Mice and hopefully other mammals in the future would be placed there to see if they could successfully reproduce over several generations.
I've been thinking about something for a while now. Hopefully in the near future I'll have the time to figure out if its feasible and economic. If so I hope to build a prototype.
Paul wouldn't be good for NASA. If he had a clue about foreign policy he'd be a decent candidate though.
Is there supposed ot be a picture in the lower right hand corner? Also is it just my computer, or should the word "posts" be after 81000? I'm glad I got registered and stopped lurking. I've just been wondering about these two things for a while.
