in lieu of sir Branson's last weeks announcement, of the earth challenge, i'd like to get a team together, form the space community and enter the challenge.
this contest is for glory and more importantly creditability. the initial 20% of the prize up front is going to go towards building such said CO2 processing plant, and if there is any money left over, it will be divided up among the team.

using CO2 for a solar heat power plant might not be such a bad idea... take the CO2 from the poles and put it through the furnace and the resulting gas which expands many many times would be great to turn a turbine.. you'd be taking CO2 from the poles adding heat to them and releasing in the air... its a win win situation.
media is friend or foe..... even if your evil .. the media can make you into a saint.... or seem like a not so bad person that just "goofed" this one time and wont do it again.
with all the news media over all this ... it would seem like a good idea to higher a bunch of horny teens to work for nasa and the tragic love triangle and drama that it would generate would keep nasa in the publics eye.
well what if instead of the main hab.. you have a smaller lander packed with supplies that when unpacked, you could used it as a hopper. you'd have to have the all the fuel onboard and i agree with you as to taking a nuclear reactor with you.
so your talking about the low chance of one of the pebble's outer shell failing? which if you have zillions, of course one of them will fail. i thought you were referring to if a fuel pellet died out. which didnt make sense, but the other ways does.

what do you mean by this? i would just assume that it would go dead and stop producing soo much heat.. or does it mean that the fuel is used up and massive amounts of radioactivity occur inside the pebble?
what about the pebble bed reactors? with the fuel pellets encase in lead and graphite to contain any radiation. they make it sound magical and wonderful, and it was originally developed in 50's but they make it sound like it was new... what is the down side to the pebbles .. besides lower energy density of a traditional nuke power plant?

i say screw government.. and we should go to god worshiping... like in larry Nevin's ringworld .. how the engineers were worshiped as gods... and since we'll terraform mars, i think we sould worship the engineers as gods... the end..
thats not a bad idea. instead of a rover.. we'd use the lander to explore places within the landing site.. instead of just using it to get back to the ship in orbit.. i like it for it saves weight and adds more work for the lander.. which should actually drop the cost of a mission.. or allows us to bring more material..
there is methane and ozone in both earth and mars... however they are being continuously being created and destroyed and dont get above a few ppm. especially on mars. methane only lasts for about 9 years before it gets destroyed which does beg the question why is it still there and how is it being replenished.. since there is thought to be no volcanic activity.
see the only thing bad with your idea.. which i though about doing before is that fact that you'd be pumping out methane and you'd be pumping out tons and tons and it wouldnt accumulate in the atmosphere until it has used up the ozone and O2. PFC'S do take a greater amount of energy, but they are able to hold in exceptionally more heat and they would last a lot longer (thousands of years) and dont get eaten away by ozone.
but either way what we need to do is increase the pressure and warm up the planet. and a benefit of releasing O2 from the soil is that it will come into contact with UV light and a decent portion will become O3 anyways.
It has been a while since chemistry for me, but I was considering what could be manufacture on Mars in the way of greehouse gases. It occured to me that there must be some way to combine 2 H2O with CO2 and produce CH4+O3+O yes I realize that the oxygen will form into O2.
So we can get methane, ozone and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water. Now that would require a great deal of power. A nuclear reactor near a pole could easily be supplied with the water for the process and as coolant.
It would seem to be the best strategy for producing greenhouse gases and an ozone layer with existing technology.
Is this feasible, and what do you think?
its doable but not feasible...
ozone just so happens to break down methane so all that work to produce methane and ozone would just go back to water and CO2. what your are better off doing is creating super greenhouse gases such as pfc's, carbon you can get from the air and the fluorine you can obtain from metal extracting processes. PFC'S can be up to 9,200 times more of a green house gas than CO2 alone, and they dont break down in the harsh atmosphere as easily.

different cultures have different ways of life... comparing one agaist one and saying this works better than that isnt always able to be done

What prevents the same in the United States?
Constitutional checks and balances, seperations of powers, and a bill of rights, that's what. If the people of Mars want a government that doesn't fall into tyranny, they should follow that successful model. Many governments leave certain things out of their constitutions because they want to be different from the United States and write their own original Constitution, and in the process they leave certain things out, perhaps intentinally, and this provide opportunities for tyrants to rise to power. The Russian Constitution made the office or President too powerful, and the result is a dictatorship, and a censored press. People sometimes want strong governments because it makes it easier for that government to solve problems if their is no debate or opposition, the problem is then, you no longer have the ability to get that government to do what you want.
yeah but the us has the highest prision population of the world, and is one of the most wasteful nations on earth!
i think that the private companies will be the first there and ihope they are. and the company that is the first to get there will be one made of of people who will truely care for the populas.
im talking about a government that will never ask any taxes from you. in a sense the government will be a corporation.. the very same one that landed there. one where the commedies and a few of the more expensive essensials will be under control of the government and revenue generated that way.
you wont have to moan and groan over a "balanced budget" there will always be room to expand, and there will be more than enough moeny to take care of day to day needs and the general populas needs.
and as a result the government get the moeny from everyone without having to tax them for every little thing, this would allow its cizitens to be the freest anyone has ever heard of.
true power is economic power as long as the government has control of the commidites and sets them at non-rediclous prices it would succede. you'd have free market and market niches filled here and there by private peoples etc.
stop me if im wrong.... if the private compaines are going to eb the first ones there.... why not turn them into the government? with resanable precautions and checks and balances
then you have to factor in where are you going to get your fuel and what is your max range.
more than likely batteries will win out only due to the fact that they are more or less in the middle, and when coupled with PV pannels you get some of your fuel back when your out there working.

size is a problem.. so is power, and even the wheel .. there is still some debate over wire mesh or solid stock for a wheel.
while landing it is another story... one nice thing about a manned mission would be this.. you could have something the size of a mac truck landed in seperate crates and then assembled, where as you'd have to drop it whole if it were unmanned.
