Re: Exploding ball of methane

Think about your last blog.
It requires much more air to vapor to ignite. Stuff that is wet and very cold will not ignite easily. I think the methane would be more like a slush than a gas in the cold reaches of space.

Re: Exploding ball of methane

Very reassuring statement made by JPL!!! Cool, better get our hard hats on.That will protect us.

"The interesting part of this mission is that we don't really know what to expect," said Don Yeomans, a senior research scientist with the Deep Impact mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). "But no matter what happens, we'll observe the phenomena."

Re: Exploding ball of methane

Errorist, you are absolutely hopeless. You are acting like one of the mindless environmentalist lemmings, who see death, destruction, and often immorality in everything humans do. They believe strongly in the concept that "no risk is acceptable" which is an entirely irrational mindset. Just as the Precautionary Principle goes, which demands certainty and forbids rational assumption, it is the mark of insane parinoia.

So you understand, you don't sound like the kind of person that can be debated with.

But remember GCNR, a hero without a villain is nothing.

GCNR without ERRORIST is just a nerd talking about Gas Core Nuclear Reactors.

Re: Exploding ball of methane

Your "theory" is simply not grounded in reality at all. There is no possible chance that deep impact will threat the Earth. None. Zero.

Next you are going to say the Roswell incident never happened. yikes

Re: Exploding ball of methane

A neat theory about the deep impact mission!

So this is another doom thread after the last one http://www.newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=639]LINK was locked due to the fact that we already have a good DI mission thread?

<SNIPPED>

Yes and you have subsequently posted the quote three times now - using the quote out of context is pretty bad form, and posting the same quote over and over could be classed as spamming.

Its a large jump from one person saying I don't know what to expect, to "DUCK!!!! IT'S GONNA HIT US!!!!"

Re: Exploding ball of methane

Errorist, have you taken a class in metaphysics, watched any movies produced by the cult of "Ram" or "Raam" or whatever he is named, or hung around with Greenpeace lunatics?

No matter what is explained to you, I am sure beyond doubt that you will just chirp "but you don't know for sure!"

There is nothing we can know with absolute certainty if you apply that standard, and if you truely believe in it, then you are crazy.

The odds are it won't happen. I understand. But, if it does happen we are in for a hard time.

Re: Exploding ball of methane

Wait 1 minute. The odds of what happening. The odds of a comet hitting earth over a time length t as t apaches infinity is one. Grated a probability of 1 doesn’t granted something will happen but odds are……

Wrong answer

It is SO hugely unlikly, that it is for all rational purposes zero.

And hence, if you are worrying about it, then you are not being rational.

Re: Exploding ball of methane

Correct answer.
It is rational to worry about such things. Why do you suppose we have a program to nuke one if we have to?

Re: Exploding ball of methane

But we don't have any such program

You also completly misunderstand and equate a NEA with the rock that Deep Impact is aimed at.

There are countless thousands of asteroids and comets and rocks in our solar system, and there is a small chance that one of them might eventually hit us.

But there is only one that Deep Impact is aimed at. And we know where it is and where its going. And nothing we could possibly do to that rock with Deep Impact will cause a threat to Earth.

Next you will say "but you don't KNOW!," in which case I will save having to make another post and point to my above writing about you being a blithering parinoid unintelligent lemming. The chances of this happening are so low that no rational, sentient being could possibly take them seriously.

This does not = zero chances. You said zero before, now you change your mind! Why the change?

There is a chance that you will spontaneously combust in the next 5 minutes.  Should you be panicking about that as well?

Re: Exploding ball of methane

Well its like me saying in the year 2003: "The changes of a tsunami  in the Indian ocean and devistating many nations is next to nothing, so lets save the money that we wanted to spend on the early warning system."

Good point the odds of that ever happening again are zero! So lets still save the money again it won't happen again for another 40,000 years.
