*Striking pic. When I first saw it yesterday, it reminded me of a sci-fi image of a spaceship going into some sort of hyperdrive with the aurora as a "special effect." :laugh:
Anywho, apparently purplish aurorae are rare (I wouldn't know...have never lived far enough north to really see this phenomenon except once or twice, and then very faintly).
Something else: Article says auroras "rarely reach below 60 kilometers, and can range up to 1000 kilometers" -- wow.
