Re: Aurora Gallery

*Okay, I usually don't post just 1 item -- but I'll make an exception for this:

http://science.nasa.gov/spaceweather/au … ]Marquette Lighthouse and Aurorae

Taken July 25.  That's a calendar-quality photo.  Heck, they should submit it to National Geographic.

And I love lighthouses.

P.S.:  Marquette Lighthouse is in Michigan.

Re: Aurora Gallery

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040928.html]Rare purple aurora

*Striking pic.  When I first saw it yesterday, it reminded me of a sci-fi image of a spaceship going into some sort of hyperdrive with the aurora as a "special effect."

Anywho, apparently purplish aurorae are rare (I wouldn't know...have never lived far enough north to really see this phenomenon except once or twice, and then very faintly).

Something else:  Article says auroras "rarely reach below 60 kilometers, and can range up to 1000 kilometers" -- wow.

Pic taken August 30 in Norway.
