Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re post in Oldfart1939 topic...

https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 71#p240171

Thanks for that helpful summary of the risks of radiation in space.

It seems to me that this debate is likely to continue for ever, because human beings never have enough information, and often information that humans take in is wrong.

It seems clear that a cosmic ray passing through a human body does damage to the cells it encounters on the way.  It seems to me that the human body involved did not need that "adjustment", but there are some who argue that a little damage to the human body is a good thing because it gives the protective systems something to do.

I find this argument of dubious value, but I grant that it might have some merit. Our muscles become weak if they are not exercised regularly. Perhaps the mechanisms that compensate for radiation damage need some exercise, but on the whole, I would imagine the human body will last longer and provide better service to it's owner if it were not subject to these insults.

If I were shipping a group of human passengers from Earth to Mars, I would consider it obligatory to provide radiation protection at least equal to that found on Earth at the surface.  We experience radiation assault on the surface of the Earth, but it seems to me we have evolved to deal with it, and that includes repair of damaged tissue.

There are others who will accept a higher risk in order to travel at less expense, and in that case, the kinds of waivers already in place for space flight should suffice to protect the shipper.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re new member...

A representative of the LK Cokoino company (China) has accepted my invitation to join the forum.

I just created the ID, and am surprised to be able to report that the system accepted a three letter name 'Tan" as the ID.

Please notify Mr. Burk immediately that we are undertaking a venture to see if we might facilitate customer support for this company in the context of the Mars Society educational mission.

I have invited two educators into the forum. Their focus will be learning about the Cokoino CKK0017 robot arm.

Please communicate with Mr. Burk at your earliest convenience to be sure he and Dr. Zubrin are comfortable with this initiative.

Nice to see you constantly looking for ways to help our readers to find things.

The forum architecture sure does not make that easy, but collecting items from the hodge podge we have and offering them in a single unified title will surely help.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

In conversation with Calliban, I thought to look for a topic we might have on "Emergency Fire Shelter"

Nothing showed up. Do you know of a place where such a topic would fit?

The solution would seem to me to fit well with the ambient conditions at the surface of Venus, with the distinction that the conditions on Venus are stable, whereas the conditions in a wildfire on Earth vary greatly.

The ISS has all type of experiments, clarks calamities talk about such events, Plus there is one other that I did but its been quite some time ago. Fire has more than heat to it as ther air is filled with many toxins from out gassing...

"clark's calamity", when bad luck is all you have

Fire on the ISS, lunar base or Mars habitat or domes

Business Opportunity Fire Shelter

the heat of venus is hidden in the clocks or skunk works topic for how to cool

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4284 and comment in topic about making synthetic fuel.

The links you provided look interesting.

If you find links in the Venus topics about how to cool a probe, those links might contain something useful.  The only solution I recall was to use traditional HVAC techniques, and those require radiating into the ambient temperatures, and ** that ** would require materials at the limits of human knowledge.  It seems to me that kbd512 found some candidate materials that might work.  However, as you know from  reading of the new topic, that is NOT what is proposed.  A different method IS proposed, which differs from traditional HVAC techniques. However, the method would be familiar to every family that packs a dinner for a picnic.

Regarding making synthetic fuel.  Your observation about the desire of those who are earning income by pulling oil from the ground seems to me to be reasonable. However, that is only a subset of the entire pool of capitalists on Earth.  The capitalists who are NOT chained to fossil fuels are looking for opportunities to earn income from other activities.  That is why you see massive investment in nuclear fusion, nuclear fission, gold hydrogen, geothermal energy, and a myriad of other initiatives having nothing to do with traditional fossil fuels.

If you ever get time to read the series I just posted, you could ** learn ** something.  Having just completed the series, I can save you some time. The reason we don't see synthetic fuel on the market has nothing to do with the capitalists who are trying to get the last penny out of the ground that they can. Instead, it has to do with the relative difficulty of creating salable products. The folks who pull oil out of the ground have a relatively easy time processing the raw material to make high quality fuels. It's not EASY and never has been, but compared to making fuel of high quality from scratch it definitely ** is ** easy.

On Mars, on the other hand, there is NO competition from the underground reservoirs. Every barrel of fuel will have to be ** made ** using the techniques that Calliban has been talking about (DME and related).  And whatever fuel is made on Mars must be matched up with the corresponding measure of oxygen.

My understanding is there is an outfit making high quality jet fuel from scratch in Peru, but I lost track of that reference and would have to look it up.  South America does have oil in Venezuela and possibly elsewhere, but NOT in Peru, so for that country pursuing synthetic fuel makes sense.

Re: Housekeeping

for SpaceNut .... The forum is off to a new work week!

I hope things went well there in New Hampshire and that the gent hit by lightning from the haystack has fully recovered.

Void has been contributing interesting visions of possible futures in the outer Solar System, with occasional visits to the home planet.

Calliban and Mrs. Calliban shared images of their recent trip to Sweden, including a mechanical power transmission system that looks to me as remarkably efficient.  Electricity might do the same job today with comparable efficiency, but those systems were working well before electricity became practical.

GW Johnson has been hard at work on design of a family of vehicles for Mars landing.

RobertDyck has been back on the scene recently.

Other long time members stop by to visit occasionally.

We have three new members whose focus will be Robotics Education, if they find time to develop the potential.  Like all of us, they have a great many other demands on their time.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re our "Lifeboat" system...

As a reminder, we are subscribed to a security service called "Cloudflare".

Since we first set up the account, logging in has been possible for registered members.  I've been logging in through the Cloudflare security system until about a week ago.  Something changed, and I can no longer log in.  This can be seen as a ** very ** secure service. It still supports read access, but if I can't get in I presume no one can.

Fortunately, the IP address access I set up still provides access, so I update the web site each day, but the inability to log in means that if we ever actually ** need ** the lifeboat service, members would not be able to log in.  There may well be something I can adjust to deal with whatever changes were made, but for now I thought I'd just tell you about the changes I'm observing.

I'm wonderiing if you might have a few moments to try logging in?  Don't spend a lot of time on it. The symptom is that the login replies immediately with an "invalid form" message, no matter what you type in.  I'm assuming something in the Cloudflare security system is involved, but of course I have no idea what that might be.

If you ** are ** able to log in, please post a message to be sure.  My observation was that the ability to post a message kept getting more and more difficult over a period of weeks, until finally I can't even log in.  In other words, it is possible that Cloudflare was tightening the screws over a period of weeks, but that is just speculation on my part.

***
Nice to see posts by Void, Calliban, RobertDyck and you in recent days.

GW Johnson is hard at work on his Mars Lander designs, but those are not ready for publication.

He is definitely at the bleeding edge of this technology.

NASA, the Russians, the Chinese have landed, and in doing so they have tried a variety of techniques but (to my knowledge) none have attempted anything as ambitious as GW is considering.  The requirements he is imposing upon the lander are severe: It must land 40 tons of payload per NASA's request, plus do so without leaving anything on the surface.  He's been studying a variety of configurations of equipment and producing page after page of detailed spreadsheet graphs and engineering style drawings.

In addition to the requirements given above, the design must survive landing after the long flight from Earth with velocity varying greatly depending upon the flight path chosen by the shipping company from Earth.

If the lander can meet ** that ** requirement, then it will most definitely be able to handle landings from Low Mars Orbit.

***
Update ... there are ** more ** peculiar situations going on with our lifeboat system. Now I can only access the system with Firefox on the Ubuntu workstation. Chromium refuses to connect with the site even though Firefox has it open.

However, once an image is delivered to the site, the new-mars.org connection appears to serve it without problems.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4288...

Thanks for trying the lifeboat login, and for the report on I forgot password.

That feature needs email to be set up, and I'm not sure how to do that. Plus, I don't know if there are restrictions due to the security layer.

Please copy the error message and post it here in housekeeping.  The password would not have changed since you created the account a couple of years ago. However, I ** can ** change the password if you like. The behavior I am seeing looks to me like the cookie established for a login session gets changed, so the login script loses contact with the client computer.  I suspect this is happening because of the security layers that Cloudflare provides.

***
Up to now no one has asked for anything for the lifeboat.... No one has provided correct email addresses even though I have asked for them repeatedly.

I think this means our members do not mind if the web site goes away for weeks at a time. In the grand scheme of things, that probably makes sense.

Re: Housekeeping

I have done a multiple fail to the captcha sign in and it still does not attach the username to the password returning

You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to pass the CAPTCHA test.

then finally I got in

Then any link requiring a login continued to ask for it though it should I was logged in, posting, reading messages, notifications..to which I backed out and it indicated that was no longer logged in so I set the keep me logged in that sets the cookie and its ok now.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #4290

Bravo!  Thanks for your persistence (and ingenuity) in figuring out how to defeat the security barriers that are actively trying to discourage logins!  July 9th must have been the last time I was able to log in. I probably created those accounts in hopes of adding our new members to the lifeboat.

One very nice feature of the phpBB3 site is that it records views of posts. You can see that if you look at images stored in the lifeboat. For example, I just put up one of Dr. Johnson's images, and you can see the count of views increase from one day to the next.

Update: Thanks for the Remember Me tip!  It worked!  I was able to log in and perform an update and save it.  Bravo (again) for your sleuthing!

Update: The Remember Me method worked on another computer!  That's two successes in a row!

Update: Thanks again for your assistance! This time I was able to store an image for GW Johnson and the process worked correctly.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Austrian research project: https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 67#p240567

Thank you for this stunning find!

An entrepreneur anywhere on Earth should be able to offer this system for sale since the IP is being freely offered.

The most favorable markets might be established solar panel farms, which are earning back their initial investment, but which are vulnerable to damage due to storms, and reduced performance due to natural events such as snow.

Even on Mars a system like the one you showed us would make sense due to the risks of dust storms.  Panels that are protected from dust do not have to be cleaned.

****
Did you catch Void's image of what looks like a space habitat rotating around an asteroid?  I've never seen anything like that, and if that is what Void had in mind it is a terrific idea!  As long as an asteroid is going the way you want to go, you can have 1 G of comfortable artificial gravity for as long as you need it, and then when you are ready to depart for a destination you can release the cable and fly to your destination with velocity courtesy of the asteroid.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re banning of Chinese humanoid robots ...

Thanks for the update you posted in late July, 2026!

It seems to me this move is going to protect Tesla from serious competition.

The Chinese appear to be making massive gains in this technology, far beyond anything the Americans have shown. Be that as it may, the security risks are massive as well, since robots from China could easily be controlled from China, or able to collect information and send it to China.
