Housekeeping

For SpaceNut

For reference - Tuscon Water notes: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 93#p188993

For reference: Plotmaster: http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 75#p154875

There are 8 pages of items in this category (Meta New Mars)

I looked at several pages before deciding to start this new topic.

Hopefully, as other forum members find old posts that were damaged during the "Great Fail" of dim Forum history, they will report them here so you can work on them as you have time.

Today I found this:

http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 180#p74180

I had entered a search for Radio and Astronomy, and got many interesting posts back but none showed up specifically dedicated to Radio Astronomy.

For that reason, I'll be creating a new dedicated topic in the Science category.

I ran an experiment with cube, and the results were unexpected.  The program made a duplicate cube.

Procedure to prepare for BWS recreation:

Re: Housekeeping

At the time of the crash there were over 5000 topics and most were near the 300 post limit in each. The old software would crash a topic and would be locked and a new one had to be started to keep it from happening.
The link of the topic should probably moved to unmanned but I can only give so much time to exploring when we creat a new topic every time we turn around rather than searching for a bit. There is an advance search in google that can find stuff that our search enginge can not.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re housekeeping and specifically repair of old damaged topics and posts ...

Why are you trying to do all this repair work yourself?

Are there no Moderators with the appropriate skills and interests to help?

I recognize that we have some members who create new topics out of thin air without searching the archive.

However, I have been careful to search (within the limits of the FluxBB search engine) to try to avoid creating new topics if they already exist.

I am (reasonably) confident you will find no topic dedicated to reporting posts that need repair.

Furthermore, I am (reasonably) confident you will find no topic dedicated to Radio Astronomy on Mars.

What you ** will ** find are lots of posts and even topics that are set up for some other focus, and which inadvertently include citations or information that relate to the theme of the new topics.

Re: Housekeeping

I just finished that topics fix and from what I remember with regards to fixing topics was that the level of moderator can fix all but posts labeled admin level. Posts in a topic typically before 2006 are the ones which can have the defects within them if you made use of the color, quote, bold, italic ect functions in there mark ups. They were setup to hold a profile post plus ranking number which was removed in the more up to date versions of software. Its that addition tagging which is causing the issue.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re work load plus new item for a topic not found ...

The NewMars forum continues to attract ** really ** interesting content by member authors.

I suspect that is happening to a large extent due to the leadership you have shown over the time I've been here, and as shown in the archive going back a number of years.

However, I get the impression there could be opportunities for you to develop helpers, even if they lack the special powers you have earned due to your service.

***
I ran across a book title today, and thought it might be interesting to some members, particularly those who take a long view of human history in light of considerations for design of a culture for Mars.

I looked for "Book" and got forty pages of results.

If you know of a suitable pre-existing topic, please put it there.

https://getpocket.com/explore/item/do-c … ket-newtab

The book was (apparently) published in 2017, and the author takes on earlier writings and especially media presentations, which he appears to think are often sensationalized with the unfortunate consequence that the minds of the population who encounter these presentations are left with partial understanding of what happened at best, and completely incorrect understanding at worst.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Internet connection ...

This is a perfect subject for the Housekeeping topic ... Are you connecting your laptop/desktop to the Internet using a mobile service?

I ask because I bought a router that (supposedly) is able to serve as a WiFi hub for a mobile phone, but I never took the plunge to upgrade my flip phone to a smart phone.

The current device in use is a wireless dial up as the computer did not have a wifi output to use the cellphone tethering function in a smart phone.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #8 (Still in Housekeeping topic) ...

What is a wireless dialup?

FYI ... the router I have is:

EDIMAX model AC 1200 Gigabit+USB Port

AC1200 super high-speed Wi-Fi
VPN
USB Port (home storage and printer sharing)
Easy Setup Use a smart phone/tablet
no CD required
Multiple SSID
Up to 10 SSIDs

BR-6478AC v2

If you had one of these, it ** should ** allow connection to the Smartphone, and through that to the Internet.

As I say, I haven't tried it because I haven't upgraded from my flip phone.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... Post #9 may have washed under the bridge, with all the other (much more interesting) traffic in the forum.

I suppose it is possible there is just a terminology issue at work here, but when I see the word "dialup" I think of an ancient 300 baud modem on a landline.

A "wireless" dialup is a picture I cannot put together.

A smartphone can provide a WiFi hub point to a router with that feature built in, but my understanding is that does not require the operator to do anything?

Re: Housekeeping

The wireless usb port traffic is at 3 g data rate but software indicates that its usually due to signal strength 230.4 kbps. paying just $35 a month for 10g of data.

The computer needs a wifi convertor to use a cell phone directly with nothing else required unless you need more device to use the same cellphone data tethering pf the phone. Most are giving plans for the cellphone for limited data and with just $10 more they give the tethering function for the wifi use but the unlimited is still capped and throttled once you are near the data limits of the plan.
The cellphone plans are 45 and up for about the same data.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #11 ...

OK ... I think I get it ... you have a Commercial WiFi provider in your neighborhood.

Here is an example of a USB WiFi device that can be plugged into a computer which does not have WiFi:

Wireless USB WiFi Adapter for Desktop - 1300Mbps 5G/2.4G 802.11AC 5Dbi Antenna WiFi Card for PC Laptop USB 3.0

In my Post #9, I showed a router which is (according to the label) able to connect to the WiFi hub in a smartphone, and thus able to deliver WiFi to as many devices in a home (or small business) as one might need to connect.

In the city where I live, we do not yet have publicly available WiFi, although from time to time the city leaders talk about offering such a network at some point.

It could very well be that the commercial providers of cable service do not appreciate the potential loss of steady income from a city run service.

Re: Housekeeping

Its actually a cell tower connection that grabs into the sprint network. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sprint_Corporation

There is a way to create a wifi hub router repeater network service but at least one connection must make it to an actual ISP provider, such as sprint. There are quite a number of provider and cellphone like devices that do go from a wifi to a cell network.

Right now I got the sprint software smartview to work with my device that was on virgin mobile so I know that I can still have my device work but still need to pay some company to stay connected and hopefully sprint will continue it rather than forwarding my accounts to boost mobile which appears to not want or can not provide service.

Thanks for the explanation of the cell tower as the source of radio signals.  I'll have to give up my vision of a "dialup modem" with wireless capability << grin >>

That would have been something to see!!!

In the mean time, best wishes for success in transition to a new provider.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... still in housekeeping topic

Now that we have the "wireless dialup" question resolved, I'd like to discuss a possible addition to the capabilities of this forum.

This forum has served for a number of years as a supportive environment (for the most part) for really creative people with ** really ** imaginative ideas.

The tendency of members to branch off of topics to explore ideas (or sometimes memories) that are stimulated by a particular post are a part of the overall culture, and while your requests for "Ordah Ordah" are occasionally heard, for the most part they are cheerfully ignored.

RobertDyck provided me with an example of a topic creator expecting contributors to stay on topic, and I've not forgotten the lesson.

So here is the idea I'd like to offer for your consideration:  A "Managed Topic"

Unlike a "normal, unmanaged topic", a "Managed Topic" would be a collaboration between the topic creator and yourself, as Administrator.

If someone were to create a topic and declare it to be a "Managed Topic", then the topic creator would request contributions which are on topic, and all would be well until the inevitable branch occurs because something reminds a forum member of something and in the blink of an eye, the topic is on a side track.

Your roll, if you were willing to accept it, would be to move the off-topic post to another topic, or perhaps to a new topic altogether.

You have actually done something along those lines a time or two (as I recall).

The detail that I think is important here, is that the topic creator would have to ask for the move.

Sometimes, a topic can be brought back on track with just a single follow up post, so a move is not necessary.

Other times, the new branch is worthy of development on its own.

The Ask:

Does this idea sound like something you could support?

Re: Housekeeping

All topics are managed topics by the originator and its up to that originator to speak up.

Any post can be split from the topic to make a new topic as you have seen with the electromagnetic rail gun for kbd512 that was in another. Both GW and KBD512 are both talking about military planes and so long as they come back to the topic there is little reason to make that back and forth a new topic.

I agree that it would be nice that others did not drift and try to sway the topic out of its lane.

We have many posters that will not follow rules and do not care to be respectful of that flow of thoughts for what is being worked on.

I think the moderators can split posts to form a topic but not the admin level posts.

The old forum software allowed for spliting posts did create a topic and later merging of topics plus individual post at one time had been possible but that feature is not working or is no longer available.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Recruiting

The article at the link below is written for commercial organizations, but the ideas seem applicable to recruiting talent for projects for this forum:

https://store.hp.com/us/en/tech-takes/4 … top-talent

I don't think it is necessary to try for "top" talent, in the case of the forum.  I think that the ability to collaborate with others is more important as a characteristic to look for in volunteers.  Volunteers can develop their skills by helping with the kinds of challenging exercises that are in discussion here.

I decided to add this forum to the activities in my profile.  Someone with an interest in space development in general, or Mars settlement in particular, may see the message.

Re: Housekeeping

The computer that I had in the box from christmas I decided to see if it would function and gain internet access with the device I have.
Dell optiflex 980 SFF it has a plugin wifi usb dongle. Its a windows 10 64bit os.
I tried the usb u600 device that works with my old xp computer.
It fails to install correctly in that the device does not function and is not seen by the software in the usb port through plug n play.
Seems this is a problem for windows 8.1 and up for the device.
So I am still in search mode for a permanent solution that works.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #20

Out of curiosity (since I have not so far been able to figure out how you're connecting to the Internet) are you connecting using a phone?

In an earlier post I gave out identification of a router that claims to be able to connect to the WiFi hub of a phone, and then to supply a home network with Ethernet service using wires (Ethernet cable) and WiFi.  It has antenna right and left of the body of the router.

I haven't opened the box yet, because I haven't upgraded my flip phone.

Re: Housekeeping

I do not have a smart phone either with the wifi tethering so thats a no go for being able to connect via a wifi link through the phone.
A router with ethernet and wifi antenna's still need a connection from it to cable or dialup or some other means to get to the internet connected to it.

Re: Housekeeping

Thank you for including the name of the phone-usb-modem you are (have been) using!
ttps://support.sprint.com/global/pdf/user_guides/sprint/3g4g_usb_modem_u600/3g4g_usb_modem_u600_ug.pdf

I have been unaware of this interesting option, due (no doubt) to having a subscription with another company that Sprint.

A quick check seems to confirm that no updates are available after windows 8!

However! I have a tip to offer ... If you are new to Windows 10, there may be a feature or two that you have not yet learned about.

I am running a piece of accounting software that was designed for Windows 7, ran under Windows 8, and stopped working with Windows 10.

However, Windows 10 offers a "Troubleshoot Compatibility" feature.

It may not work with your device, so I don't want to get your hopes up.

However, if there is an icon on your desktop for the software that talks to the usb u600 modem, there ** may ** be an option to troubleshoot compatibility when you right click on the icon.  It's worth a shot.

I have to run that feature every time I reboot my Windows 10 system, which happens each and every time the Windows 10 loads a new splash screen.  I've learned to live with the feature.

I use Ubuntu for most computers here.

I do have a couple of XP systems due to peripherals they drive.

Re: Housekeeping

I gave that a try and when I say that I dont not no the OS where it worked it blinks to ready then goes out still to not function. This appears to be the plug n play port software re-write for making windows 10 64 bit that is the cause. Will see if I can find a use card for the machine that has its own driver for the device as that would make it not windows os driven. I have one more thing to try but will still try others as I think of them.

Re: Housekeeping

This is primarily for SpaceNut, but it may be useful for others:

I just attended an online meeting of a tech association that meets every month, and has done so for many years.  For the first time, the group tried a group meeting.  They invited a popular speaker, and the host was one of the more tech savvy members.  From my point of view, as a viewer  using a web browser, the event seemed quite successful.  There was a central display with the speaker having two areas on the screen, one for the slides and the other for the speaker, and the host had a small window in the lower right.  To the right of that was a column for chat activity by participants, and that column was active throughout the presentation.  Most comments were on point.

It might seem unlikely that this forum would ever want to have an online meeting, but here is the name of the web site that provided the service, if anyone is interested:
