Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re three links in topic about Interplanetary Transport...

https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 05#p232005

Thanks for all three links!  While the publication dates are on the older side, the content seems to me to hold up well.

As you would doubtless know from reading the articles, an original vision was to put the passenger compartment at the far end of a tether with a counter weight at the other end.  kbd512's design would eliminate the counterweight and put matched personnel habitats at both ends. kbd512's design also solves the precession problem by counter rotating the batons.

For SpaceNut re sound post:
https://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.ph … 06#p232006

This is a fascinating idea!  The output of a rocket engine should be like the output of a vacuum cleaner exhaust, completely free of a dominant frequency.  My guess is that no rocket engine designer would want a specific frequency to dominate.

Hopefully GW Johnson will see an opportunity to follow up with observations or comments about this idea.

My guess is that a trombone player creates the sound that is amplified by the instrument, similar to a trumpet, but I don't actually know, so am hoping someone knowledgeable will comment.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... the scan from 231001 to 232000 completed without interruption. I guess the Internet was glassy smooth last night. I'll report the results shortly.

Good run!

Only two potholes showed up for 1000 posts:  231390 and 231447

The series from 232000 is in progress.

For the record, the count of lines for this run is: 113,928

That total will vary depending upon the content added to the forum by members

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re four (count'em) FOUR posts in one day !!!

I'm hoping this means the power is working in your property, and that you may have a place to set up the laptop!

Thanks (in particular) for the post about lubrication ... That is ** very ** much going to be an issue for the small ITV kbd512 and GW Johnson are discussing. I would expect roller bearings to be used, but using the right space rated grease sure does sound like a good idea!

If you are interested in pursuing this a bit further ... the bearings on the ITV need to last for four years in case the vessel is delayed at Mars. And they will be in service that entire four years, except for brief intervals when they may be stopped to allow personnel to move around or to restock supplies.

Are the ISS solar panels running on roller bearings?  I would expect so but verification would be helpful.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

This forum has no category for ethics...

At the time the forum was created what I'm about to show you was not imaginable (by most people, for sure!)

I thought you might be interested to see the new temptations that recent graduates are facing...

This is from an article published by Yahoo in their Finance section.  It is about a policy issued by Jamie Diamond at JPMorgan.

An email sent by Filippo Gori and John Simmons, co-heads of global banking at America’s largest bank, welcomed new grads starting this summer with a stern warning: “If you accept a position with another company before joining us or within your first 18 months, you will be provided notice and your employment with the firm will end.”

The reasoning was clear, to get on at the financial giant “your full attention and participation are essential.”

Continuing its no-nonsense outline to junior talent, the memo adds that training sessions, meetings and obligations are mandatory—if they are missed then, again, the individual may be let go.

The email telling recent graduates they would be let go if they secured a further job was only sent to new employees in the U.S., Fortune understands, largely because the issue of talent accepting future roles is more of a problem stateside than in other geographies.

Just got a 1992 Dutchman travel trailer delivered so as to start saving money by not using the motel for my disabled boys.

Granted its not in perfect shape like this one but it will work.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Dutchman travel trailer...

Thanks for sending the picture!  The Google Meeting looked at it this evening.

Hopefully one of these days you'll be able to drop in to show us progress on the remodel.

Father's Day is coming up, and it's a moment for us all to appreciate all you are doing and have done over the years, to care for all members of your family.

The subject is on my mind because the two eaglets who were hatched in a nest in Big Bear lake nature preserve have both left the nest.  The parents have been just amazing in their care of the two sisters as they grew,  but I note that Shadow the father brought more food than his partner, Jackie over all the months I (and thousands of others) watched them.  Jackie's specialty was bringing sticks for the nest.

best wishes for steady progress with the remodel!

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut and kbd512 ...

I may have run out my welcome at imgur.com.

I tried to upload an image this evening and I was turned down. I am guessing I've run out of space in my free account.

kbd512 and I talked about creating a php program that I could run to save images on the Mars Society web site.  kbd512 would have to insure that the program has the necessary permissions, and that only Admins can run it, but I think it would be a relatively small program, since all it would do would be to upload a file and save it to disk.

Currently the forum software does have a save image function for posts, but much like the avatar image it's turned off in the admin contrl panel.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #3758

Thanks for picking up on the problem I reported!  I had NO idea there might be a "save image" feature in the forum!

Who has the power to turn that on and off?  Is it Administrator only, or can a Moderator do it?

I assume we (er, you and former administrators) had a reason to turn that feature off.

Do we want to limit the feature?  Members seem to be uploading images from a variety of sites so the disk storage is happening in the cloud and Mars Society doesn't have to pay for it.  On the ** other ** hand, free services like that can go away.

Would you be willing to show kbd512 how to turn on the feature at a Google Meeting?

I'm thinking of skipping the next Google meeting because of the number of fathers we have in the group, but we would be back on track the following week.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re saving images on the Mars Society server.

Thanks again for telling us we have this capability.

We are planning another Google Meeting this coming Sunday, and I hope you can stop by to walk kbd512 through the process.  I'd like to be able to turn that feature on and off but may not be able to do so.

GW Johnson prepared an image showing velocities to reach circular orbit from various altitudes, including GEO.  The graph is similar to the one created by a Python program I put up on the board recently, but GW's is much more informative, including showing escape velocity.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re saving images on NewMars server...

GW Johnson is creating new images at a steady pace.  I am hoping you might be able to spare a few moments to check in with us on Sunday.

Hopefully it won't take long for you to coach kbd512 through whatever steps are needed to turn on the file storing feature.

I would like to be able to run that feature as a Moderator, but we have to know what PHP code is running in order to change the permissions.

There may be a parameter in the database that controls access to that feature. That would be the ideal solution, but we might have to update the PHP code if it does not use the database to determine access rights.

What I have in mind is turning on the feature just long enough to store a file, and then resetting it to OFF immediately.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...

kbd512 took a look at the Admin menu this evening,  but he did not see anything that looked like a way to turn on file uploads.

I hope your home remodel is going well, and at some point you'll be able to help us figure out what to do.

Re: Housekeeping

Sorry was sick with inner ear vertigo and more to the point being in the hospital for 2 days. I am still recovering.
Much like the avatar save/display it's hidden in the post image BBC coding to save the image in the admin options. Most add an upload and since it's not scanned for viruses that how we would loss the site so I think it was removed by fluxbb around 2008 to keep sites from crashing.

Re: Housekeeping

Hi SpaceNut ....

Sorry to hear of your illness and sure do hope you continue recovering!  Thanks for making the extra effort to contact us!

Thanks too, for the history of the removal of the file upload feature!  That rationale makes ** all kinds ** of sense, and it may explain why imgur.com gave me a hard time recently. I was using standard software to create an image, but if the bit sequences accidentally match a known virus the file can be rejected.  When you are feeling better, and if you have time to dive into this with kbd512, we might be able  to find where that code resides. We now control the package, so we should be able to (very carefully) restore it so it can only be used by Admins or Mods.

By the way!  I notice that the avatar feature did not show up after we implemented the new FluxBB package.  You and I were the only ones using it, so I don't think we need it, but hopefully you and kbd512 will be able to find that part of the Admin menu when you return!

I took a peak and the current code only has the Avarta feature still in it. There is a mod that could be added https://postimages.org/fluxbb

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #3765

First, thank you for looking at our existing package, and confirming that (as you warned) the image upload feature was removed due to virus fears.

Those fears were certainly justified, so anything we do needs to take that concern into account.

Second, thank you for going the additional step of looking for and finding the mod that we could install.

A fascinating aspect of the mod is that it runs on the site to which we would be linking when we add that feature to our web site.

We do not control that web site, so we need to think through whether we want to form a permanent "marriage/dependency" with that site.

That said, I am ** really ** impressed with how easy the programmers at that site have made the installation.

We literally add ** one ** line of code to our system, and VOILA !!! we have image storage.

OK SpaceNut ... where are the images stored?  Are they stored on the web site where the linked code is to run?

This is ** really ** interesting!

Thanks again for doing the research that allows us to consider this offer.

*** And!  Not to forget !!! Best wishes for continued progress on your house remodel AND for continued recovery from that recent bug.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...

I'm thinking about a Master Index for the forum...

GW Johnson reminded me recently that he has worked out a calculation showing that an expendable rocket SSTO is feasible using LH2 and LOX.  I vaguely recall that work, but would be unable to find it quickly.  A "Master Index" would help members (and readers) to find things quickly.

Here is a list of the topics we have in July of 2025, containing the word "index" in the title:

A "Master Index" would be a topic in Meta New Mars where members could post a brief description of a post they contributed, or that someone else contributed.

In the case of something like the work GW Johnson did, an entry might look like this:

Author: GW Johnson
Post: Calculation of SSTO to LEO using LH2 and LOX
Link: (NewMars link here)
Description: (Rocket Equation exercise with gravity and drag)
Search tags: SSTO

Another example might be:

Author: kbd512
Post: Analysis and comparison of S4 electric flyer with traditional helicopter
Link: (link here)
Description:

Re: Housekeeping

Subject post index and topic post index are some what difficult as its those key word descriptors that you where doing.
There are 11 pg's and this topic that have the key words LH2 and LOX in them.
Mars Ascent Vehicle - NTO/MMH/HAN vs LOX/LCH4/LH2
So is this a topic of Ascent fuels or is it about Ascent vehicles choice of fuel to use.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #3768

Thanks for looking at the problem, and for the reminder of kbd512's topic.

I think kbd512 was (and is) trying to make the case for the use of storable fuels despite the dangers they present.

***
I just heard from GW Johnson, and he reminded me that his study/comparison of SSTO and TSTO is published in the exRocketman blog.

I am pretty sure it is posted here in this forum, but we have no easy, convenient, reliable way to find it.  At this point, I don't remember enough details to put together reasonable search.

There is a term that just came to mind: "bookmark"

A bookmark may take many forms, but I am thinking of a slip of paper between pages where a reader would like to quickly find a reference.

An index at the back of a book can be helpful in finding topics based upon words selected by the author or publisher/editor.

I often supplement the original index with words I want to find, when the author's choices are insufficient.

This conversation with you just inspired the thought that perhaps a "Bookmark" topic would be used by members.

Instead of an index, which implies some sort of overall management (which this forum does not have) a Bookmark topic in Meta would be available to all members to help ** them ** remember posts or sequences that they want to be able to find in future.

Thanks for stopping in to visit the forum on a Holiday!  I would be interested in how your remodel is coming, and how the new mobile shelter is working out for your family.

This is a good time of year for a new roof to go in. I hope the roofer's situation is improving.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Education opportunity....

Your advice on how to structure an educational opportunity would be welcome.

kbd512 has provided what appears to be a set of starting data for an iterative process to design a carbon based SSTO.

GW Johnson has kindly agreed to provide advice on how to perform the iterative process that allows for a more and more accurate prediction of how a flight would go.

I am interested in helping the process along, and am interested in your thoughts about how this might be done for greatest educational benefit to NewMars members and our non-member readership.

I should emphasize that humans have NOT flown an SSTO to space, using any kind of fuel.

GW Johnson has shown (through an iterative process) that LH2 can deliver a payload to LEO in an SSTO configuration.

kbd512 has collected data that might provide a basis for a similar analysis for a carbon fueled SSTO.

How we organize this activity is my question.  The normal NewMars forum structure is the framework, but we can supplement that with links to Dropbox and to image repositories as needed.

PS ... I hope your home remodel is on track!
