Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re 3675

Thanks for the good news the internment is complete, and that your sons came to help.

Thanks too, for the good news the pallet project is continuing despite the soggy weather.

Thanks for the detail about the daughter you lost some time ago.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

Sometimes it is worth while to read the definition of a term, before commenting upon it.

We have talked about sand but adding liquid now creates internal tank storage pressure. Sand battery was discussed in the Geothermal and Geothermal Battery (Changed Title 12/21/23) a Void started topic.

Your comment reveals you do not understand what is going on.

There is no "fluid" other than plain air.

The "sand" is not sand as we think of it.

Please take time to read the explanation I provided.

Re: Housekeeping

This is the system that I described for solar concentrated with antifreeze heat exchanger embedded in the sand so that heat can be taken out later for heating.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... thanks for additional information about a traditional sand based storage system.

Is the picture valid for a "fluidized" system that uses air to circulate the material, which is NOT "sand" in the usual beach sense we might think of.

In your post about a traditional sand based energy storage system, you asked what happens if a pipe leaks?

The answer would appear to me to be universal, for any kind of heat exchange system.   The pipe has to be repaired.  The nature of the material used to hold thermal energy has nothing to do with repair of a pipe.

If you can find something about the actual system of the topic, please post it.  All the other material is better applied to other topics.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Google Meeting....

I am looking forward to next week, in hopes you can show us more of your progress on the pallet shed.

In the mean time, kbd512 has made significant progress in moving the new FluxBB system toward testing.

We are able to access the system from the outside Internet, and the formatting of the color scheme for PHP files is not yet correct. However, we seem to have the restored database from September 9th in place, and the functionality we tested worked.  However, we did encounter a problem that prevents us from releasing the system for testing. Whatever the problem is, it is unique to the Mars Society configuration, because we have the exact same software running on the Azure test site, and on my development PC and the problem is NOT present.  I am hoping kbd512 will find time to investigate over the next week.

In other news.... you may have noticed RobertDyck has initiated an interesting topic about fusion, and kbd512 found a reference to a fusion rocket that seems to have one or two aspects that seem similar to what RobertDyck is considering.

In still other news, RGClark and GW Johnson recently exchanged posts that included a reminder of the Cold War, and out of that came a suggestion from GW Johnson to take a look at back issues of Aviation Week magazine, which has been published since 1919.  The entire series appears to have been digitized from about 1919 through about 1963 or so.  I took a look at an issue from 1919, and was amazed at the dramatic experiments in progress at the time.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re How are things going?

GW Johnson tells me that the present time may be challenging for a gent who lost a spouse.

The first week is filled with activity and this week you've been busy catching up at work.

You're welcome to stop in tomorrow evening if you'd like.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...

Thanks for stopping in with the Google Meeting Sunday evening....

This topic title seems appropriate for the massive rework you are doing to renovate the home where you and your family have lived for quite a while.

Thanks for showing us the interior where you've been working, assisted by your sons, and giving us a sense of your plans for a new roof and other needed improvements.

Best wishes for success as you proceed with this work, and for the best possible answers to questions that come up as you proceed.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ...

This topic started out as a place for discussion of housekeeping for the Forum.

However, in recent days it has unexpectedly opened up to a ** real ** house ** rebuilding ** project that you have started there in New Hampshire, but which you have a strong incentive to finish before winter.

The highest priority may be the new roof.  Have you made a decision if you are going with metal (50 years) or asphalt (30 years)?

Update:
SpaceNut, you may have perfect hearing. I hope so.

However, I've taken an interest in the subject of hearing, and found this article of interest:
https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/18/dini … wtab-en-us

The article is about experiments by Apple to provide hearing assistance.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re FluxBB upgrade...

Thank you again for logging in and starting testing of Admin features!

Here is a bit of an update on the current file permissions problem:

http://newmars.com/forums/style/Fire/base_admin.css

The link above shows what should happen when we (members) log in. We need that file to be available so our style sheets will appear.

the corresponding file is not currently accessible in the new application:

http://newmars.com/new/style/Fire/base_admin.css

I am hoping kbd512 can solve this last remaining little puzzle.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re new FluxBB system...

Please log into the new system again.

You will (probably) have to change your css to Fire.... It is possible that when you logged in before the style sheets were repaired, you may have reverted to the default of Air, which currently does not work. If you change to Fire the web site should look normal.

Please resume testing of Admin functions!  This is a test environment, so the data base will be replaced when the decision is made to go live.

This means you can test Admin functions without placing the production environment at risk.

Please be ** sure ** you are in the test system when you make changes!

For SpaceNut re testing of new FluBB web site...

Knowing you are rebuilding your home, inside and out, you may not have time for this...

Please log into the new system at http://newmars.com/new/

Please post a message there to confirm you were able to log in, and to report your observations.

Update on Thursday... SpaceNut just FYI
I found this article in my feed today, and decided to make a note of it. Your post is as good a place as any:

Big Think+ — November 18, 2024
Daniel Goleman: Why emotional intelligence may be the number one indicator of organizational success
Today’s technology presents unique challenges for social awareness and relationship management at work, making emotional intelligence all the more critical.
An older man sits on a chair with his finger raised. Behind him are a tangled line and a spiral, both against a green backdrop.

The article goes into some depth in review of how emotional intelligence comes into play in the kind of workplace we have in NewMars. We are 100% remote "workers" and we sometimes have difficulty with inter-personal relationships.

For SpaceNut re conversion to new system...

I'd like to improve/adjust the message that appears when we shut off logins.

Can you help with that, if you are just using your Smartphone?

I'd like the new text to inform our members that conversion is underway, and logins will be available again later on Sunday.

We will begin conversion at Noon Houston time, but logins will be disabled at Noon New Hampshire time.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re running on new system...

I am likely the only member of NewMars who is holding breath while we go through the shakedown period.

You helped with Admin testing while we had the test system up on Azure, and I thank you again for that.  You found a number of bugs that we were able to whack.

Your home rebuild is keeping you busy, but hopefully at some point you'll return to the forum to have another look around.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... best wishes for rapid movement on your home remodel.

I asked Google for help with the term: "wire plywood"...

"Plywood wire" refers to a type of plywood where one side is coated with a film that has a wire mesh pattern, essentially creating a non-slip surface on the plywood; it's often called "film-faced wire mesh plywood" and is used in applications where anti-slip properties are needed, like flooring in vehicles or construction scaffolding.

If you have a spare moment, please add a word or two about this material and how it fits into the remodel plan.

Is this for the roof or for the floor, or somewhere else?

Is this underlayment for the metal roof?

Thanks for reporting this unexpected behavior.

Is anyone else seeing this?

For data gathering, please provide links to examples.

Please provide a link to a post that looks "normal" to you.

Please provide a link to a post that has a font different from what you are expecting.

The bbcode reference may be helpful.  I vaguely recall using different font sizes in posts with reports by ChatGPT.

However, my recollection is we could not get the advanced font feature to work with our antiquated forum software.

We have updated the underlying software by 10 - 12 years. I wonder if bbcodes that did not work previously are now working.

When you create a post, there is a button ]BBCode] that is showing as "on" in my browser.

However, when I use Quick reply with my phone, text font appears small. This may be an issue as kbd512 responded to a post in Projects about Venus. I questioned alloys for a Venus hard suit. In a separate post I asked if Inconel is necessary. Reply by kbd512 showed he did not read that post. It was short and small font. Hard to read by others?

Re: Housekeeping

For RobertDyck re #3698

Thanks for clarifying you are working with a Smart Phone!

I use full sized computers as does kbd512, and have not seen the behavior you described.

However, I ** have ** used my Android Smart Phone to access the forum on occasion, so understand (a little bit) about how different the environment is.  Please check to see how the posts look on your full sized computer.  My guess is you will not see the small font there, but your report will be interesting either way.

Regarding seeing posts ... a lot has to do with timing.  kbd512 may have logged on when posts were still being processed. I have often seen shortened posts at one time, and found them much longer later.  I'm guessing the server is processing posts in chunks while it is doing other work for the Mars Society, but eventually it seems to finish all the chunks, if I wait long enough.
