Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re #75 .... thanks for the confirmation .... I'm working on the Potholes report, and will send today's email shortly.

Also FYI ... I'm hoping to have the next version of the little TestID JavaScript ready before Sunday's Zoom. It is possible kbd512 may have time to improve the program more rapidly, but in the mean time, I'm proposing we take the process slowly.  The addition of label text per your suggestion seems like a reasonable mini-goal.

Topic: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Chinese interested in Bigelow's inflatables - Alt.SpaceStation in the making?

Post:

Pardon for me on stepping in and actually providing numbers, but I thought that this piece of your post actually deserved such.  Namely in response Falcon V's ability, well it has a quoted to ISS orbit payload capacity of 3,570 kg which incidently very near the Gemini capsule's wet weight of 3,851 kg.  Seems like saying that it is impossible for use as a manned launch system is currently premature.  Of course deciding that it is going to be used for a manned launch at some point in time is also premature, considering it has not launched unmanned as of yet.  Still Elon Musk is out to make money, and seems to have done a good job of it in the past if he can 'throw' away 1-2 hundred million dollars, and for that reason alone, I think the launches for the Falcon and the future Falcon V will be successful.

This was a reply to a longer post by someone else.

The topic went on for a total of 23 posts, capped by SpaceNut who expressed hope that China and the rest of the space faring nations might cooperate. The Chinese overtures of 2004 were quickly blocked by paranoid US congresspersons who feared Communism and forbade NASA from working with the Chinese.

The result appears to be a full blown competition with China following it's own path, and gathering it's own allies in space.

I will send an email, although I suspect the hotmail domain signals a low probability of a reply.

hotmail.com is a Microsoft property, and it appears to still be in use, but mounted on Azure.

Expiration date is 2024.

Topic:  Martian Politics and Economy » Rights or Duties

Post:

synthlord wrote:

Rights or Duties: Which should the Martian colonist and colony gov't be more concerned with?

I'm radical for capitalism, so I say it should be rights as a basis for Martian government. In my view, there is no "duty to society", only responsibilities to which one contractually agrees with another person. Proximity with others implies no unearned "duty" to them. Besides, the first settlers will be people who will build this new world, and no one will need the services of another person that don't already exist by the others' own necessity. It can be a society of interdependent specialists, not servants to a "greater good."

I highly doubt there would be a "wild west" scenario on Mars. No one would be able  to go (in the early days) unless they had the skills and means to survive. Those means - habitats, air reclamation & recycling, water purification, etc. - would be made available by those who produce and sell them, probably before the new settlers even leave Earth.

The topic itself was started by Palomar.

The topic lasted for 14 posts, and (perhaps by coincidence) the post by our candidate ended the discussion.

The discussion itself revealed a range of views about rights of citizens in a society vs the duties of those citizens to the society.

I'm going to pass on this candidate.  Anyone who is an active member of the forum is welcome to write this person to invite them to return.

I could easily be mistaken in my evaluation of this candidate, and would be pleased if he returned and showed the ability to make a contribution.

However, the self-centered nature of the post implies to me that the group (NewMars) is NOT of interest to this person.

Since my purpose here is to (attempt to) build up a community of positively reinforcing members, I don't see this person as capable of participating.

Pass!

Topic  chosen for first (and only) post:  Science, Technology, and Astronomy » Public Hearing - President's Comm on Moon, Mars, & Beyond

Well! It is good to see that the Presidential Commission had an outreach effort, but I'm guessing Ms. Flowers was either a staffer or a volunteer.

With that expectation, I would expect her interest in the NewMars forum to be  close to zero.

However, these events took place in 2004, and a lot has happened since.

SusanFlowers wrote:

This post started a topic, and no one responded ....

OK ... I think this person was acting on behalf of the Commission, and not interested in NewMars except as a distribution venue.

That said, Susan Flowers ** did ** have the interest to open a kiosk of some kind on anser.org, which appears to still exist.

I asked Bing for more information about anser.org.  The web site is modern and fairly sophisticated.

However, I suspect the email address is not going to work.  Instead, I filled out an inquiry on the Contact page, to see if Susan Flowers is still associated with the organization.

So ... Not sending and Not passing ... a new category: Inquiry

OK ... the inquiry was accepted by the anser.org web site, after Capcha wanted me to select images with traffic lights.

My guess is someone will respond to the inquiry, because this appears to be a ** real ** organization, with a public service focus.

For comparison, the ID for a recent new member is 437264

What those numbers tell me is that we have had on the order of 400000 ID's taken up by spammer attempts.

I'm guessing that FluxBB allocated an ID to each applicant for membership, even though the majority of the applicants (spammers) did not get to first base, let alone go on to become one of our many thousands of TestID members.

Until this moment, I did not realize how many spammer attempts have been made over 20 years.  That is an amazing number.

If you had not closed off the portal, we would ** still ** be facing that onslaught.

So! Today we have SukanyaR

An IP address was collected, so I can investigate that.

The web provider is in India - Bharti Airtel Limited

So far so good ... let's see which topic was chosen for the first post ...

I am not favorably impressed.  No doubt the antics/behavior/uproar of Mr. Trump were global news at the time, and there was plenty of energy devoted to them in the forum by existing members.

However, this candidate chose a non-Mars related topic to engage, and the candidate chose a carefully worded entree into the mix.

The candidate returned just once.

No one said hello, or acknowledged the post.

OK ... that observation makes the difference... I'll send the email as a belated acknowledgement of the post.

This was a person from a non-US culture taking the risk of posting in a US/England dominated forum.

that's what my project is, to think of a way to colonize Mars.

-Life support systems (oxygen etc.)
-shelter
-recreation
-medical facility
-wast disposal system
-construction materials
-transportation to/from Mars

Those are the things i still need to think about, but I'm really stressed out and I can't think right now, so any help at all, or website address would be very much appreciated!!

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re #85

Thanks for restoring those folks to member status.

I look forward to this moment each day with both hope and trepidation.  So many of the prospects in this early going are spammers, there is a low probability any one candidate is someone we might want to invite to return.

Our candidate for today is stripeman

The email matches the username, which is a positive indicator.

Let's see what we have ...

We have an IP address ... airtelbroadband.in - India -Bharti Airtel Limited

India has a strong space program.  Their successful Mars probe just finished a remarkable tour of duty.  The probe's batteries ran out of juice during a 7+ hour long swing through Mars' shadow, and the probe did not recover.  I presume orientation was lost and there was not enough energy left ... OK ... now I recall the details ... the maneuvering fuel was exhausted, and the battery died during that long shadow pass.

However, we have someone at hand who (probably) is not associated with the Indian space program.

Let's see what topic this person might have chosen for the first (and only) post:

Disappointing ... the Admin of the day removed the post.

I recommend converting this username to TestID.

In case someone from India happens to see this post ... we at NewMars would welcome a member from India who might be willing to post reports on the many world class projects under way in India.

See the Recruiting Topic for procedure.  It's pretty simple.

The email address implies a commercial operation that might have been seeking publicity for it's product lines ... we'll see shortly

Whois reports that the web site is long gone.

However, it (or Google (or Bing)) found a site that is similar ... www.drakeplanetarium.org offers a portable planetarium that can visit schools.

I took a quick look and found no reference to "portableplanetarium.com", but the site ** does ** use the words "portable planetarium"

We won't be able to send an email based on the information gathered so far.

Let's see which topic this visitor in 2006 might have selected...

Topic:  Pictures of Mars » Interactive Mars panorama

The one post by steufish got a generous reply from Rxke but that was the  end of the topic

Surprise! A link to the blogspot works! http://portableplanetarium.blogspot.com … unity.html

There's an About Me offer: Shawn Sacramento California

There's an AOL email address on offer at the blogspot site....

The profile says: Industry Education; Occupation: elementary school astronomy presentations

The email is provided by the blog site .... it does not work on the machine used for this inquiry - it might work for someone else

That's as far as I can go with this interesting applicant for membership.

If someone else would care to pursue this further, please feel free to do so. The candidate certainly appears to be someone worth inviting to return.

16 years have gone by, and there have been a lot of developments in astronomy to share with elementary school audiences.

So (it would appear) steufish(Shawn) keep the web site going for six years, and it still existed in 2018 when Wayback took a snapshot.

The Wayback display included a branch to a 2002 edition of The IPS Portable Planetarium Systems by Susan Button.

There is a pdf of that volume, plus: Manufacturers of Portable Planetariums.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

Our candidate for today is more promising than some we've seen recently...

The name and email make sense, and the email is based in the UK.

Steven30 was(is) member 544 from 2003 ....

The freeserve host was founded in 1998, and it has quite a history.  After numerous transitions, it apparently survives as Orange Home UK

Often in these situations the email names are preserved.  I am still using an email name of a company that is gone for many years, but Yahoo picked it up, so I'm using Yahoo email with an ancient email name.

I'll now try a ping to see if the email address is active:  too bad! ping reported "unknown host"

Let's go on to see what topic was chosen for the one and only post:

In what year does everyone think it's likely that we'll have the first manned mission to Mars?

I've just watched a programme on TV in the UK called Space Colonies which was very good with a gentleman called Dr Robert Zubrin and also an author called Marshall Savage, fascinating stuff  smile

Stephen30 created a new topic with his post, and it continued for some time:  The topic reached #19 in 2003-11-15

The range of respondents included:

Belgium
India
Indiana
Australia
Canada (RobertDyck)
Sweden

It would be good to see the range of coverage of forum membership extending further afield than at present.

We ** are ** fortunate to have several members who live in Europe.

We have one who resides in Mexico.

Active membership seems to reside in the US and England/UK at present, with an occasional visit by Quaoar.

Because we have no working email address, there is no point in sending an email, but it has been rewarding to visit with member 544.

This was post #14 of the topic.

The topic itself has continued to this year.

I will send the email.

For SpaceNut re Email Outreach ....

I try to always start out one of these investigations with a positive frame of mind.  We still have a few spammer relics left over from the mass purge, but on the other hand, we have some folks who are entirely "normal" and worth inviting to return.

However, today's candidate is off on a worrisome foot ... the name is 'starchaser' but the email address looks computer generated.

We'll see shortly ... >> So! joined in 2002 as Member 185

That was back before RobertDyck !!!  # 274

The email address is with Yahoo, so the provider is still around.

What topic did this person choose?  Meta New Mars » Get your name in Space for FREE!

This appears to have been an outreach from the Planetary Society ...

The japanese branch of the Planetary Society recently launched a public outreach program designed to raise awareness of ISAS' MUSES-C mission.  The "hook" for public involvement is MUSES-C is taking one million names with it to Asteroid 1998SF36.

Your name can go along for FREE by signing up here: http://www.planetary.org/html....es.html

This post did not elicit any replies from the members of the time.

This review is a new chance for someone to post to the topic.

For one thing, 20 years have gone by, and a lot has happened with the Japanese space program and with the Planetary Society.

I'll send the email, but don't have a lot of hope for a reply.  Those 20 years really add up.

I would expect nothing less from a person doing a professional job at this activity and it is greatly aoppreciated.

Once we have used the username email list and have cut the number down, I will do the username searching to see if I can find alternative emails for the same owner of the account that we have.
