Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re #51 ... thank you for the confirmation of both emails!

The email server seems to be working (reasonably) reliably!  It only has to deal with four sends a day (from us).  It ** should ** work for any member who wants to try it, but I caution everyone that there is NO feedback from the system, and the only way you can be sure the system worked is if the recipient replies.

So far, we've heard back from NONE of our candidates, but I am not expecting replies from folks who were active 20 or so years ago.  A reply would be a nice surprise.

Titan wrote:

From the way it looks many here on the forums are advocating either nuclear, solar, or wind power generation.  If solar is chosen it would likely take a good deal of labor to put enough panels up to generate the necessary power.  One option is to make robots do all the work.

A while ago I ran across an article in Discover about robots building robots and sustaining themselves.  The energy comes from solar panels and the raw materials come from the soil.  The colony would initially start from a small population that is self-sustainable and would reproduce until a target population is hit and the colony would then be switched from reproduction mode to production mode.  The robot colony would build supplies for a human mission.  I suggest checking out the article in Discover here: Robot, Build Thyself.  Here is a link to the abstract from their article in Mathematical and Computer Modeling: Exponential Growth of Large Self-Reproducing Machine Systems.

It appears that Titan created the topic, and it was modestly successful ... it ran on into the second page ...
All the active members of the time period seem to have participated, although I didn't see RobertDyck, so he must have been on vacation at the time, or working away from home as he often did in his career.

I'll send the invitation.  19 years .... that's plenty of time for Titan to have acquired additional knowledge and insight.

With any luck he might be willing to engage with the forum once again, when robots are 19 years further along, and AI is now a mainstream activity.

If past is prolog, everyone (and anyone) can tune into the Internet feed for every presentation, ** and ** the presentations will be published on YouTube.

It will be good to have ** two ** NewMars members in the thick of things!

Old Timer!  The ID is 341

For comparison, RobertDyck is member 274 ....

22 years have gone by ....

Let's see what topic this person chose:  Re: Human missions » Colour of a sunrise/sunset? - Any atmospheric scientists around?

OK ... reasonable question ... I wonder if anyone responded ...

For whatever reason, no one responded.

The specification for an "atmospheric scientist" might have been off-putting.

There aren't many of those in the world at any one time, and most likely they weren't members of the NewMars forum.

Still, I'm willing to give this person a try, if the web site of the email address is still alive, which may well NOT be the case.

The website had an IP address at one time: Richadson, Texas, United States

Awk ... there are 16 complaints against that IP address for hacking ... my guess is that whatever legitimate server was there at one time was hacked by one of thousands of spammers.  The most recent report is from August of 2022.

I will most definitely NOT be sending anything to that address

Interesting that the originator of the original post likely came from (or was located in) Texas.

In fact, this question was the start of a topic that persisted for 48 total, including one by SpaceNut in 2015.

However, despite the great success of the topic, The Bear chose to remain silent from then on.

I'll pass, while noting the success of the topic for the historical record of the NewMars forum.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re Email Outreach...

Today's candidate is Teufels

This is member #15

The email address is from a domain postmaster.co.uk

I like the idea of having a government sponsored email address, and it looks as though the UK may have experimented with that idea, back in 2001.

Whois reports that the domain is still active!  It was first registered 13-Sep-1996

The expiration date of the current registration is 2024.

Still, our candidate was active 20+ years ago ....

Let's see what topic was chosen for the first (and only) post...

Human missions » Mars? Moon first. - Mars is too hard and dangerous for now.

That was back in 2001 .... not much has changed .... the Moon ** still ** looks like a better destination for a human experimental station.

What was the post itself?

Teufels wrote:

Mars is years away from Earth. The moon is only a couple days away. We should test out technology and technique on the moon before we try Mars.

What would happen if we sent six people to Mars and the whole crew was killed? It might be the end of publicly funded space travel for decades!

Teufels created the topic, and folks kept it going for 6 pages ...

Mars_B4_Moon brought it back into view in 2022...

Well, our candidate certainly got a lot of mileage out of that one post, but for whatever reason, the person never returned.

Still ... I think an email ping in honor of our 15th member is in order.

I'll send it shortly.

At least the domain is still operating.

I can hardly believe it .... that was a nice opening post .... no one responded.
