Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut ....

Everything is in readiness for the launch of the Email Outreach Campaign for 1291 Candidates you have selected.

Today, I dove to the bottom of the file you provided, and I have a question:

Candidates 1261 through 1291 have all posted zero times.  I think they were all accounts created by spammers.

You are Senior Administrator, so your judgement rules.

Do you want me to write to these folks?

My inclination would be to ban them as spammers, and convert them to usable ID's.

The first candidate with one post is a humorist ... "Zubrin-For-President"

While I appreciate good humor when it shows up, I don't see a lot of upside potential for this candidate.

For that reason, I'm NOT planning to include this person in the campaign.

However, you ** are ** Senior Administrator, so if you want this person to receive a letter, please confirm.

The next candidate is "zooms" ....

The one post contains:

???  am trying to find info regarding the view of mars from earth in august 2005. i believe it will be a unique event in our lifetime but cannot find any details anywhere. help please.

Palomar sent a helpful reply, and we heard nothing further from zooms.

I don't see much point in attempting to reach out to this candidate.

As usual, you are welcome to overrule, if you want to.

I'm going to stop the analysis of the list for today.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

That must have been the first list as I reduced that and have the last number as 1263 but I do see those that had names with zero posts at the end of the list. I also saw that there are several known email endings which have been spammer account generators such as .RU and others. That we can further review. It would be good to send the list to the others to get their opinions as well on whom should be removed from it.

For SpaceNut re #2

Thanks for taking a look at my opening report.

Pending further guidance, I will assume the names in the 1291 line file, from the bottom through Ms. Zoom can be dropped from consideration.

I'll pick up the review tomorrow with the next name in line.

You mentioned inviting "others" to help with the review process.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

In line with the suggestion by SpaceNut, all NewMars forum members are invited to take part in deciding which of the 1000+ members we'd like to invite to return to active participation in the forum.

Today's candidate is: Zogwart

Topic:  Mars Gravity Biosatellite » Where does this stand now? » 2012-03-18 02:26:11

I was wondering if any one had an update to any of the information given here.

That seems like a reasonable request (to me at least) ...

The topic itself seemed (again, to me at least) worth a review ....

I've decided to nominate Zogwart to be the first live test subject for SpaceNut's new email outreach initiative.

I'm not expecting much, because Zogwart didn't return, but 10 years has gone by and a lot can happen in a person's life.

Meanwhile, the gravity experiment is as remote as it ever was.

Update at 11:45 local time ....

The first of (hopefully many) email outreach pings is on it's way....

I had forgotten about the 60 second wait between sends ... I set up the run to send to the candidate first, then my test email, then to SpaceNut.

The whole operation takes (on the order of 5 minutes) .... The laptop would be asleep otherwise.

Update at 13:04 .... my copy of the email did not arrive.  For SpaceNut ... please update this topic if you received your copy, or if you didn't (for that matter)

Update at 16:33 local time ... I sent an email to my test account manually, and it arrived just fine.

The automated email did NOT arrive ... there is nothing in the log to indicate anything one way or the other.

FluxBB accepts an email send request and provides no feedback at all.

Unmanned probes » Spirit & Opportunity 2 - Continued from original thread
This topic is marked closed.  Both Spirit and Opportunity are "retired" and their projects are closed.
Their ambitious adventures live on in the historical record, and some day they will be preserved in Museum Domes.

In the mean time, we have a record from their time:

I would think that a 15 watt drain is *very* serious.  I believe that the rover's solar panels are supposed to generate 750watt-hours per day (at the start of the mission. This will decrease over time due to dust of course)
Also, Sprit was generating less than that at the start if its mission, due to the atmosphere being more dusty. I don't know the figures for Opportunity, since Nasa prefers to give us pretty pictures instead of telemetery.
Anyway, if we assume that the 15watt thermostatically controlled heater is on half the time (12 hours, at night when it's coldest), thats a daily power requirment of 12*15, i.e 180watt-hours. That's 25% of the power budget, not allowing for charge/discharge losses in the batteries.
This will get much worse, as the solar illumination decreases, the panels get dusty, the batteries age, and average temperatures drop due to seasonal changes on Mars.
Still, 15watts seems quite large for a simple joint heater. Perhaps that figure is not accurate, or the units given are wrong (i.e. 15watt-hours instead of watts?)
Anyone got more information on this issue?

http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 703#p26703

Zardor will be queued up for an email today.

Update at 11:07 local time ...

For SpaceNut ... today the test message arrived at the test account ... Please let me know if the test email reaches you.
It would be equally helpful to know if the message did ** not ** reach you.

Sorry that I have not been able to be online as I was ill to the stomach with acid reflux and pain. Thank you for the continued efforts to get this started.
I found the list you are working from and started record keeping on it as you indicate an email has been sent.
I agree with the look and go if posts look like we should see if there is still interest in NewMars.
If no response, then we will secure the accounts at that point after a reasonable period of time.
I agree the zero-account post tally should be removed from the user list and converted.

This was a short topic created by Tom Kalbus ... I was surprised to see that GW Johnson contributed a post.

Mars_B4_Moon contributed a post to re-activate the topic after a long pause.  I think the topic is best left to drift back in time.

I'll send today's Outreach to zandroid.  The email subsystem seems to be unreliable, so I would give chances of the message reaching zandroid at 1%.

Update at 10:04 local time

That was quick ... the automation failed because the user had disabled form email.

I'm inclined to suggest we convert the account for use by someone else.

however, before doing that, I note that the email address is available to an Administrator.

It's your option, SpaceNut ... if you want to ping this person the email address looks reasonable.

The risk is that you would then be exposing your email account to an unknown recipient.

My recommendation is to recycle the account, but it's your call.

I suppose you ** could ** use a test email account to send a ping.

Thanks again for adjusting the email for zandroid.  The script appears to have succeeded.

I sent test emails to my test account and to SpaceNut.

Re: Email Outreach Campaign 2022-2023

For SpaceNut re #11

Thanks for the confirmation !!! I'm settling into a routine ...

The candidate goes first, because the first cycle is a test cycle to be sure everything is working.  I then send a set of three emails:

#2 to my test account
#3 to SpaceNut
#4 to my test account

If both emails to my test account arrive, I figure the program was working properly, and there is a decent chance the email to the candidate went out.
Your verification is helpful as another confirmation.

We've got plenty of time for this campaign.

Tomorrow, I'll take a look at possibly running the TestID script for the Zero Post candidates you sent me.

The script hasn't been used for a long time, but in rereading it today, I think it should still work.

I got a kick out of seeing Palomar's commentary on why she did not get a telescope as a kid, after Mars_B4_Moon brought that topic from 2004 back to life for a brief moment.  The topic was about pictures of planets, and that recent image of Jupiter from the Webb would be a good fit there.

Zachoi wrote:

Hey guys, I know I'm a little late to the party, but I wanted to contribute a bit of potentially helpful information.

The original idea posted by Louis sounds similar to NASA's Extreme Access Flyers project. I haven't found much recent information about it (I tried to reference an article from 2015 but apparently users are no longer allowed to post links), but I do know that Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) in Daytona Beach, Florida is still working with NASA on the project. More specifically, the Engineering Physics Propulsion Lab (EPPL) has been designing systems for UAV propulsion on Mars using compressed CO2.

Also, kind of related, I was wondering if you guys had any advice for me. I am a graduate student at ERAU beginning my thesis designing an optimal control system for a Martian drone that uses both propellers and compressed CO2. However, after doing some initial research of my own (which is how I found this topic actually), I find myself trying to decide between two options for such a system:

1.)    Having a compressed air engine that the CO2 is fed into that can power the propellers in tandem with an electric motor and will recharge the batteries as the compressed air engine runs, just like a hybrid car works,
2.)    Simply having both propellers and cold gas thrusters that work together to produce thrust and attitude correction.

Do you have any thoughts on either system? The goal is to maximize flight time (or flight distance I suppose, but one would assume that the two are closely related).

Hope the information above helps!

I hope our outreach email reaches Zachoi .... If Zachoi was a graduate student in 2019, then an update on progress would be most interesting (to me for sure).

While the specific ambition, to create a flying vehicle for the Mars environment that would use compressed gas, seems (to me at least) on the speculative side, the spirit of inquiry, and learning by doing, may lead to practical systems for use on Mars.

Well! I wonder what this person (?robot?) offered as a post?

First, let's get a little historical perspective on American health care. This is not intended to be an exhausted look into that history but it will give us an appreciation of how the health care system and our expectations for it developed. What drove costs higher and higher?

The actual post went on for a great length.

I have no way of knowing what was going on in the head(s) of the entity that submitted this post ... However, it caused NewMars members to consider the matter, and a total of 6 responses  occurred.

I deduce this was an exploratory problem by a Russian agent, to see what might happen on the NewMars forum.

This is most definitely NOT a username I will invite to return.

I ** would ** note that clark offered what I perceive to be a sensible policy, in post #6 of the topic.

Does Mars have enough mass to exert enough of a gravitational force to keep the right kind of atmospheric gases at the right atmospheric pressure that would allow water to ever flow in a liquid state on the surface?  Gravity and mass are directly proportional. If the atmospheric gases are not the right kind then liquid water could not exist on the surface long enough to cause the errosion formed features seen.  If the atmospheric pressure is too low then liquid water could not exist at all.  Heavy gas molecules could form an atmosphere on a low gravity planet, but would the chemical interaction between the atmosphere and any water on the surface allow the water to exist long enough to cause the type of errosion seen on the surface of Mars?

People look at surface features on Mars and see that they resemble water formed surface features on Earth and thus claim that water had to have flowed on the surface of Mars sometime in its past to form those features there, too.  There is no place on the surface of Earth that has not be affected by water, so there is no way to know if those kind of surface features could be formed by anything else.  How do we know that billions of years of fine sand blowing over a surface could not form those features on Mars?  Couldn't the canyons seen on the Mars be formed by the planet expanding and contracting due to some other force?

It would be fantastic if surface water could exist on Mars.  I think that we should have had a manned mission to Mars a long time ago.  It would be nice, though, if someone could address those questions I have about Mars water.  smile

A number of members in the 2003 era responded.

Wayland321 did not respond, and one possibility is that the members answered all (their) questions.

I'll pass.  SpaceNut, if you want to ping this persons, let me know.
