Re: Housekeeping

Planetary or science as well as human could take the broad stroke of such a topic and the construction equipment is just small parts of the sense of what you are going after.

Re: Housekeeping

We turned a page in Housekeeping, so I'll start a new post for this update:

Scan has reached 25,000.  A run to 26,000 is under way.

Statistics will be added later this evening.

Update at 22:34 local time .... For SpaceNut re 1702 ... thanks for thinking about where Mars Heavy Industry might go.

There's no hurry, for sure!  I was inspired by the bold nature of your water-from-regolith proposal.

GW Johnson and OF1939 have both pointed out how much more energy (not to mention time) would be required to wring chemically bound water out of the regolith, but I like the concept because it has plenty of potential benefits besides just coming up with fuel.

The energy needed to extract water is a major investment in separating the materials of which the regolith is composed, and once separated, they are valuable on their own.  The company that builds up a stock pile of material extracted from regolith has a tradable commodity.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re Posts Repair initiative ...

A scan to 27,000 is in progress ... ETA is (about) 16:00 local time

Work on a new function for WBA is progressing.

The routine to accept a new script command is working.

Code was added today to handle the flow for the new command at run time.

A test is scheduled for after the scan ends.  The new (partially completed) function should take in the contents of the clipboard, append the text "Edited" and return the text to the clipboard.

The test script will be modified to set up the test and confirm the results.

If that test goes well, the next (and hopefully) final step will be to add code to perform the delete operations.

Somewhere between here and 80,000, the number of bandits will drop to zero.

It may well be several weeks before we see that signal.  We have 25 Earth days to go at the present pace.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ... special request...

I just launched a new Hall of Fame topic.

It appears that only an Administrator can make a topic Sticky.

Please take a look at the new topic to see if it might be worth upgrading to "Sticky" status.

While you're looking at Meta New Mars, .... are there some topics that no longer need to be Sticky.  I note there are quite a few of them.

Thanks!

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut ....

The topic created by Josh Cryer is in need of editing.... http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 19#p115019

I'd appreciate your giving me permission to edit the lead post in that topic to reflect current practice while honoring the previous time.

When you reply, please include the post number so I'll know which post you are talking about.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re member achievements and activities

This forum started out as a free-for-all, and it continued in that mode for (nearly) two decades.

Under your leadership, the forum is slowly shifting toward a mode of individual and collective achievement.

The two prominent examples are the work of GW Johnson, and now the presentation by RobertDyck at the Mars 2021 Conference.

Please start thinking about a topic in Meta Index level that would report on the status of various individual initiatives.

Here is a starting list but I've surely missed some ...

1) GW Johnson - Landing probe
2) GW Johnson - Orbital refueling
3) RobertDyck - Large Ship
4) SpaceNut - Industrial Scale Regolith Harvest for 2400 ton yield in one Earth year
5) OF 1939 - 17 person expedition - detailed specification and operational planning
6) Calliban ... all over the map
7) kbd512 - all over the map

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #1712

Thank you for taking a look at the post by Josh Cryer.  Thanks for offering to modify it while preserving the historical context.

And! Thanks for your encouragement to proceed with admission of our new candidate.

Just FYI .... we have been disappointed in our previous admissions ... the candidates are everything we could hope for, but they have not continued to be engaged. I know that for two (and probably for all three) their immediate academic obligations are consuming all their available time and energy.

I will ask our most recent candidate if (he/she) has the time available to stay engaged.

There's not much point in admitting someone, no matter how qualified, if they never return.

Edit ... I will honor the trust extended to me to work on posts by Josh Cryer.  The changes to be made are as defined for the Posts Repair project, and for nothing else.  Thus, it is good that you have decided to change the post by Josh to show current procedures. Thanks!

*** Other matters ...  I am not as successful at setting up gather.town as the gent was who hosts the 3D Printer meeings.

I'll ask him for advice.

In the mean time, I'm attempting to set up Zoom.

The initial setup seems to go well on Chromebook, so I extended an invitation to another email account where I can test connection on Windows 7.

Update at 10:37 .... So far, so good!

The second participant is working well.  I am feeling (moderately) confident that I can extend an invitation to others at this point.

I'll start with GW Johnson.  He's already confirmed the ability to bring up gather.town, but my configuration of the site appears to be wanting.

Zoom ** should ** work, but we'll see.

Update at 13:13 local time ... a new "delete text" function for WBA is through bench testing.

It appears to be removing a bogie and following text through to but not including the StopAt character.

Next stop is a live test on the laptop.

I apologize, Krustry references have been altered to molten metal in the regolith water topic.

It **appears** that Zoom can work in "free"mode, but (apparently) it is necessary to subscribe to the service to be able to set up meetings by name.

A YouTube video shows how to set up a name for meetings, but that function does not appear to be available in free mode.

Free mode can still work, but it is necessary to use email to distribute the meeting ID and password to the participants.

The cost of a basic subscription is not unreasonable:  An annual plan is $149.90, and that is less than a pager (for example).

If someone in the Lander Team can afford the expense, please consider subscribing.

Gather.Town has a free service,  but it too may be hobbled for free users.

The site is Zoom.US

***
In the mean time, if someone is interested in seeing how Zoom might work, there is a meeting of the local Linux group this evening.

The meeting is scheduled at 18:30 local time, or 22:30 UTC per Google.

If a member of the Lander Team would like to participate in the Linux meeting (assuming the leader is agreeable, which I assume is the case), please let me know via the Housekeeping topic so I can send the URL for the meeting.

The local Computer Society must be paying for a subscription to Zoom, because they have all the amenities!

For all, but primarily for Lander Team members...

In an effort to assist GW Johnson with delivery of a file he needed, I created a Dropbox account for NewMars.

The Dropbox has both public and private storage/display featues.

The free service supports up to 2 Gb of storage.

I am open to suggestions for how to use this space to the advantage of the NewMars forum.

here is a reminder from Dropbox:

Re: Housekeeping

Well! That was a disappointing test ... The meeting ID seemed to be accepted, but the security password was NOT accepted.

Now sure what to make of that, except to note that this is apparently NOT as easy to do as I had hoped.

Re: Housekeeping

Resuming Zoom testing ...

The experiment reported in #1720 may have failed because I turned off the machine from which the Zoom meeting was scheduled.

Subsequently, at the scheduled time of 4 PM UTC, I could not log in on another system.

Previously I conducted a successful test by leaving the base machine running and connecting from another device.

I'll attempt to repeat that test today, with the difference that I'll post the meeting ID and password on the forum, in case someone sees it and has time to test the Zoom software.

One drawback to this idea is that ** anyone ** on Earth who happens to be looking at the forum could make a connection.

That would be interesting, if it happens, but I think chances are slim.

I'll try again. See Post #1720 for revised ID and PW.

Update at 14:01 local time .... OK! I appears this may work.

All I need now are other participants to confirm success.

The key seems to be keeping the Host system online.

I set up a Zoom meeting on a Chromebook, and then opened up another system in my little "Zoom Studio".

The password is ** Case ** sensitive.

I'll leave the connection running for a few minutes in case someone (forum member or global forum reader) decides to try a connection.

As of 14:17, I've closed the Zoom Studio connection, but the Base Station is still running.  If someone wants to test it, you are welcome.

The base station will remain open for a while longer.

If someone ** does ** test the connection, please put a note in Chat, so I'll know about it.

OK ... this is going to work.  I left the Base Station up until now (14:42 local time)

No one else signed in, although someone might have attempted to do so.

It appears NewMarsMember can host a Zoom meeting using the free version of the software.

Now we need participants!

We are halfway to the (arbitrary) goal of 80,000

A pace of 2,000 posts scanned per day seems to be hold up.

20 more Earth days should do the trick.

Meanwhile, the first test results from a live test of post 37001 are in.

The good news! Nothing bad appears to have happened.
The bad news! Nothing at all appears to have happened.

The post was definitely pulled from the server.  There is record of that.  After that, ** nothing **.

It's back to the debugger to see what's going on.  I'll use captured data from Post 37001 for this debug session.

Update at 13:51 local time ... the debugger wasn't necessary.  Adjustments to the script were needed.

I've scheduled another live test after the current scan to 41,000 is complete.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut .... here is the log from a test of the new script with Post 37001.

The post was ** not ** updated.  Please study the log and let me know if you see anything that needs adjustment.

The next step, after your approval, is to add a command to save the edited text back into the post.

We can run this test with as many posts as you would like.

They will all process the text, report the work done, and leave the post as it was, until you are satisfied it is going to work the way you want it to.

EOJ Msg#1: Successful Run. No Warning Errors.

In attempting to provide this report, I found a problem that needs attention, so will leave this post as a preliminary report.  I'll make some changes and run the test against 37001 again.

Update at 20:49 local time ....

After studying the log more carefully, I see two issues ...

1) I have dangling right brackets ... This probably occurs due to an error in computing the number of characters to delete, but it may be caused by two right brackets in sequence, which may have occurred due to other delete operations.

2) There are instances of quote starts doubling up.  It turns out the original post contains that situation, so I'll probably have to set up a special delete command just for that.

In any case, the new feature is not ready for prime time.

Statistics will be added later today.

A run to 43,000 will start shortly.

Update at 11:49 local time ... the scan to 43,000 is running.

An error in computation of the length of a string to be saved when there is no StopAt parameter was corrected.

A test of WBA is scheduled for after the running scan is finished.

There is a quirk that shows up in Post 37001 ... When the color parameter is removed, the quote is left behind.

The result is a double quote string of the form: [ q u o t e ] [ q u o t e ]

I'm planning a test of the existing command, to see if it can eliminate one of the two quote parameters.

I'm ** pretty ** sure FluxBB will object to the double quote formulation, if there is no matching close, and in any case, the double quote is not needed.

It is possible I'll have to add a full parser to this program, to make sure start and stop quote parameters are matched before a Submit is attempted.

Update at 20:09 local time ... the scan to 43,000 concluded a few minutes ago.

The statistics will be uploaded shortly.

A test of WGA delete text function revealed another quirk that must be dealt with.

The text to be deleted is being removed, but a bunch of zeros are showing up in what used to be the color parameters.  Those were ** supposed ** to have been removed, so it's back to the debugger to see what's NOT happening.

Re: Housekeeping

The color and quotes were nested with closures later in the post.
I did a repair of that post and if you go to the edit of it you will see what was done.
The remainder of that topic is still in need of repair for sure.
