MARS SOCIETY ANNOUNCEMENT
View this email in your browser

Join Us This Thursday on Red Planet Live for a Discussion about Careers in STEM!

Do you have a strong interest in pursuing a career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related field?

Are you a young adult following a traditional path and getting ready to take your first steps at the university level or perhaps you’re already well on your way?

Maybe you are a more seasoned adult looking to pivot to STEM after already pursuing other career choices?

Red Planet Live, a monthly video blog organized by the Mars Society and hosted by Ron Craig, is going to explore both options, although much of the episode will focus on the more non-traditional path leading to a STEM career.

As our global community works towards making humanity multi-planetary and with the planet Mars firmly in its crosshairs, more and more passionate individuals like you will need to participate in  STEM fields in order to achieve this goal.

Watch Red Planet Live on Thursday, August 26th at 6:00 pm PT / 9:00 pm ET when Ron speaks with Nancy Atkinson, Dr. Brian Keating, Susan Holden Martin, and Matt Williams about their own educational and career journeys as well as how best to follow in their footsteps into the world of STEM.

We invite you to watch our live video podcast on YouTube at: https://bit.ly/3y5KxCz. For questions, please email: ron@roncr.com. Thank you, and we hope you’ll enjoy and benefit from this interesting episode.

For SpaceNut .... Mr. Craig might be interested in one or two of the prospective presentations our members are developing.

He might be willing to consider drafts that fall short of what might be expected for a full 30 minute video with questions.

Exposure on his blog might provide a way to reach potential helpers who otherwise would be unaware of the work in progress here.

I'm thinking about OF1939, RobertDyck and GW Johnson.

Live Broadcast with AMADEE-20 Staff in Austria & Israel during Mars Society Convention

The Mars Society is pleased to announce that it will be carrying out a live interview with members of the AMADEE-20 mission staff based in Austria and Israel during the 24th Annual International Mars Society Convention on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at 9:00 am PT / 18:00 GMT Austria / 19:00 GMT Israel.

Organized by the Austrian Space Forum (Österreichisches Weltraum Forum) and hosted by the Israel Space Agency, AMADEE-20 is an integrated Mars analog field mission being conducted October 4-31 at D-MARS (Desert Mars Analog Ramon Station) at the Ramon Crater in Israel’s Negev Desert.

The AMADEE-20 simulation will include a crew of highly-trained analog astronauts using sophisticated space suit prototypes for testing in preparation for future use by human explorers on the Red Planet. 200 researchers from 25 countries will be involved in AMADEE-20 research and field studies. Originally scheduled for November 2020, the AMADEE-20 mission was postponed until October 2021 in recognition of COVID-19 concerns and health guidelines.

Members of AMADEE-20’s support staff in Innsbruck, Austria will talk virtually about their role in the mission, while additional support staff working on-site at D-MARS in Israel will provide an update about the crew’s mission and field studies at approximately the mid-way point of their analog program. Questions will also be taken from the convention’s virtual audience during the 30-minute live broadcast.

This year’s virtual Mars Society convention, scheduled for October 14-17, will be free of charge (although donations are welcomed). For complete details, including online registration, a list of confirmed speakers, and sponsorship opportunities, please click here. Regular updates will be posted in the coming weeks on the Mars Society web site and its social media platforms.

SpaceNukes’ David Poston to Discuss Mars Reactor Technology at Mars Society Convention

The Mars Society is pleased to announce that Dr. David Poston, Co-Founder of Space Nuclear Power Corporation (SpaceNukes), will discuss the company’s plans to evolve its reactor technology to 5-Mwe Mars surface power systems during the 24th Annual International Mars Society Convention, scheduled for October 14-17, 2021.

SpaceNukes has developed a simple, step-wise evolutionary approach to high-power systems that is rooted in KRUSTY – the 1-kWe Kilo-power system prototype that was successfully designed and developed in 2018, and was the first successful nuclear-powered test of a space reactor in the U.S. in over 50 years.

Dr. Poston has spent his career at GE Nuclear Energy and the Los Alamos National Laboratory leading the design of small special purpose reactors for government and commercial applications. Numerous failed programs during his career has led Dr. Poston to change his focus from trying to design the best reactor on paper to the best reactor that can realistically be developed and deployed.

He received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, an M.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of California Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan.
