MARS SOCIETY ANNOUNCEMENT
View this email in your browserJoin Us This Thursday on Red Planet Live for a Discussion about Careers in STEM!
Do you have a strong interest in pursuing a career in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) related field?
Are you a young adult following a traditional path and getting ready to take your first steps at the university level or perhaps you’re already well on your way?
Maybe you are a more seasoned adult looking to pivot to STEM after already pursuing other career choices?
Red Planet Live, a monthly video blog organized by the Mars Society and hosted by Ron Craig, is going to explore both options, although much of the episode will focus on the more non-traditional path leading to a STEM career.
As our global community works towards making humanity multi-planetary and with the planet Mars firmly in its crosshairs, more and more passionate individuals like you will need to participate in STEM fields in order to achieve this goal.
Watch Red Planet Live on Thursday, August 26th at 6:00 pm PT / 9:00 pm ET when Ron speaks with Nancy Atkinson, Dr. Brian Keating, Susan Holden Martin, and Matt Williams about their own educational and career journeys as well as how best to follow in their footsteps into the world of STEM.
We invite you to watch our live video podcast on YouTube at: https://bit.ly/3y5KxCz. For questions, please email: ron@roncr.com. Thank you, and we hope you’ll enjoy and benefit from this interesting episode.

For SpaceNut .... Mr. Craig might be interested in one or two of the prospective presentations our members are developing.
He might be willing to consider drafts that fall short of what might be expected for a full 30 minute video with questions.
Exposure on his blog might provide a way to reach potential helpers who otherwise would be unaware of the work in progress here.
I'm thinking about OF1939, RobertDyck and GW Johnson.

SpaceNukes’ David Poston to Discuss Mars Reactor Technology at Mars Society Convention
The Mars Society is pleased to announce that Dr. David Poston, Co-Founder of Space Nuclear Power Corporation (SpaceNukes), will discuss the company’s plans to evolve its reactor technology to 5-Mwe Mars surface power systems during the 24th Annual International Mars Society Convention, scheduled for October 14-17, 2021.
SpaceNukes has developed a simple, step-wise evolutionary approach to high-power systems that is rooted in KRUSTY – the 1-kWe Kilo-power system prototype that was successfully designed and developed in 2018, and was the first successful nuclear-powered test of a space reactor in the U.S. in over 50 years.
Dr. Poston has spent his career at GE Nuclear Energy and the Los Alamos National Laboratory leading the design of small special purpose reactors for government and commercial applications. Numerous failed programs during his career has led Dr. Poston to change his focus from trying to design the best reactor on paper to the best reactor that can realistically be developed and deployed.
He received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, an M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, an M.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of California Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Michigan.

Deputy NASA Administrator Pamela Melroy to Address 2021 Mars Society Convention
The Mars Society is very pleased to announce that Pamela Melroy, Deputy NASA Administrator, will give a virtual keynote address on Saturday, October 16th at 9:00 am PT / 12:00 pm ET* on "NASA's Path to Mars” during the 24th Annual International Mars Society Convention, scheduled for October 14-17.
As Deputy Administrator, Ms. Melroy performs the duties and exercises the powers delegated by the Administrator, assists the Administrator in making final agency decisions, and acts for the Administrator in his absence by performing all necessary functions to govern NASA operations. She is also responsible for laying the agency's vision and representing NASA to the Executive Office of the President, Congress, heads of federal and other appropriate government agencies, international organizations, and external organizations and communities.
Ms. Melroy was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program in 1983. As a co-pilot, aircraft commander, instructor pilot, and test pilot, Melroy logged more than 6,000 flight hours in more than 50 different aircraft before retiring from the Air Force in 2007. She is a veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Operation Just Cause, with more than 200 combat and combat support hours.
Ms. Melroy was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in December 1994. Initially assigned to astronaut support duties for launch and landing, she also worked advanced projects for the Astronaut Office. She also performed Capsule Communicator (CAPCOM) duties in mission control. In addition, she served on the Columbia Reconstruction Team as the lead for the crew module and served as Deputy Project Manager for the Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Team. In her final position, she served as Branch Chief for the Orion branch of the Astronaut Office.
One of only two women to command a space shuttle, Ms. Melroy logged more than 38 days (924 hours) in space. She served as pilot on two flights, STS-92 in 2000 and STS-112 in 2002, and was the mission commander on STS-120 in 2007. All three of her missions were assembly missions to build the International Space Station.
After serving more than two decades in the Air Force and as a NASA astronaut, Ms. Melroy took on a number of leadership roles, including at Lockheed Martin, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Nova Systems Pty, Australia, and as an advisor to the Australian Space Agency. She also served as an independent consultant and a member of the National Space Council’s Users Advisory Group.
Ms. Melroy holds a bachelor’s degree in physics and astronomy from Wellesley College and a master’s degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
