Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

The NewMarsMember * gmail.com portal is open for business.

We have news from an ** old ** member this morning:

GW Johnson checked in with an update for the Landing Legs topic. That was posted to one of several topics that contain the word "legs".

We have 7,400 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members, and Id's through  9,700 are waiting for SpaceNut to add finishing touches.  We have identified 1000+ Usernames which are eligible for upgrade for use by "real" members.

We have multiple initiatives underway that can use assistance, or you can create your own initiative.

Read Post #2 of this topic for procedures.

For existing registered members who have lost your password ... If you remember the email address you used to register, you can request a recovery email at that address.  If you no longer have the email available (as could happen over 20+ years) just write to this email address. Your request will be forwarded to SpaceNut, who has the tools available to assist as needed.

For all ... we really ** are ** looking for members who want to make a difference by helping others with projects, or providing leadership on new projects.  We have a ready supply of folks who can and will make comments and offer suggestions.  We don't need more folks in that specialty.  We ** do ** need folks who can and ** will ** help project leaders already trying to achieve something in the real world.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

For OF1939 re Post #138 in:

    Index
    » Human missions
» Companion fo Mars Expedition Number One; 17 crew members

<snip>
I just made a small addition to the original thread.
I specifically request some input from all chemists, biologists, and geologists for their input here and I'll consider their suggestions and make necessary modifications.

It is possible for a small number of forum members to amplify your efforts by providing logistics support.

A small advertisement/banner describing the kinds of specialists you are inviting to help could be emailed or even physically mailed to suitable institutions world wide.

Please write such an invitation in a format suitable for forwarding without the introduction of extraneous text by those who would like to be of assistance.

The posting members of this forum all live close to major institutions of higher learning, or to scientific non-profit institutions, or to scientific commercial institutions.

In addition, SpaceNut has from time to time posted invitations in the Mars Society forum, and it is possible folks there might include one or two who would be qualified to assist you in your project.

Certainly, the Mars Society membership ** knows ** people who would qualify, if your invitation can persuade them to take the risk of applying for membership in this forum.

The decision of SpaceNut to block spammers and to open the NewMarsMember Portal means that the folks admitted to the membership can have life experience that would be helpful.

At this point, we have one PhD student working on design of a robust minicomputer suitable for space service, one college student pursuing robotics as a career field, and one student early in his academic career interested in possibly playing a role in space settlement.

We don't have to be in a great hurry to bring in new members.

On the other hand, the senior members of this forum are (most likely) appreciative of assistance sooner rather than later.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

We have a note from Noah today ...

Hello!

Good to hear from you. I attached a file at the end of some recent work. But I only want to post a finished concept in the base design topic.
I am curious about your opinion, especially if you have any corrections regarding the language.

Currently I am applying at Aris (https://aris-space.ch), a project of my university.
I have to admit that a underestimated the workload for the Mars base. If I can work with the Aris team, I will pause the Mars project.
And then I will try to start a new Mars project at the Aris team.

Best regards,

A new initiative is in early discussion, to write a proposal to create, launch and operate a maintenance facility for Hubble.  While service of the Hubble was carried out by (very talented and well-trained) humans in the past, it is no longer necessary for humans to visit Hubble to extend it's life.  With modern equipment, teleoperation is perfectly capable of installing an new hardware that may be needed in decades ahead.

A maintenance vehicle could move between Hubble's orbit and LEO for restocking with spare parts.

I am happy to report that we have an application in the in hopper this morning!  I'll work on it over the weekend.

My first impression is "definitely favorable"

We have 8,350 freshly refurbished User Id's ready for new members, and Id's through  11,111 are waiting for SpaceNut to add finishing touches.  We have identified over 5,000 Usernames which may be eligible for upgrade for use by "real" members.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

Is there a volunteer willing to assist with vetting new members?

We have an application from a candidate who deserves careful review, and I have a backlog ... Noah submitted a paper (with attachments) and I would like to concentrate on that.

It is possible we may be able to bring new members into the group who are willing to help members who are already here.

For many years, everyone who joins is ready and willing to start new initiatives but (with few exceptions) we have not seen anyone try to help anyone else.

I am here from the Knowledge Forum, and that is a hardnosed bunch.  I don't fit in perfectly, but I ** do ** like the concept of deciding on a course of action and then proceeding step by step to achieve it.

RobertDyck has a concept for a Large Ship that needs a lot of work, but which certainly ** should ** be brought to life in the not-too-distant future.

Calliban has described use of nuclear power to provide abundant energy, as recently as today.  I'd like to see at least ** one ** of those visions start moving toward a working model.

GW Johnson has indicated he believes the Hubble ST can and should be saved, and not only that, (if I understand correctly) he is in favor of putting an end to the series of visits by the Maytag repairman.  That instrument has EARNED a permanent support base right where it is ... a mini-ISS would be about right.

Edit: What are the Russians planning for the ISS module they are replacing?  Could it serve as the heart of a service station for Hubble?

Void created initiatives that are languishing ,,, the bulk delivery of non-perishable cargo to Mars looks both feasible and economically justifiable.  I'd like to see that go forward.

OF1939 has launched an initiative to design and (hopefully) realize a 17 person expedition to Mars.  He has asked repeatedly for assistance. The most recent request was for support by his peers.  This is a worthy undertaking, and there are (potentially) thousands of people world wide who have the background to assist, and possibly even contacts with others who might be interested in helping.

This forum would benefit greatly if new members were willing to read what current members have written, and then offer ways to help.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

Now you can see why James our Admin/web master is so busy all of the time leaving the majority of NewMars up to those that want to do something more with it.

Forward the new member to my email to see what was written and we will go from there, copy kbd512 on it as well.

Re: Recruiting expertise for NewMars Forum topics:

For SpaceNut re #246 ... after reviewing the email this morning, I decided to post most of it with personal details omitted.

I have also asked the applicant to read Post#2 and to answer the two standard questions there.

Thank you for your offer to help with the vetting process.  I think this one can proceed without the email phase, but I'll keep your kind offer in mind for future situations.
