SpaceNut,
I guess it would depend upon perspective. Similar to both Ford and GM, Chrysler was run into the ground through a series of inexcusably poor management decisions that bankrupted all three auto makers. I can't say with certainty where this latest attempt to expand market share through acquisition will ultimately go, but my guess is that the competitive strengths of all the companies involved will ultimately suffer, as they typically do.

It was back a bit that I said tariff wars were not going to end well...
Two companies petitioned for Trump’s solar tariffs—now they’re both out of business
“Stop the bleeding,” implored panel maker Suniva in its petition to the US International Trade Commission (ITC), joined by a second manufacturer, SolarWorld. These tariffs, Suniva insisted, would generate at least 114,800 new jobs in the US. Trump Administration slapped a 30% tax on imported solar cells and panels SolarWorld Americas, actually a US subsidiary of a German company, was bought out of bankruptcy by SunPower in October. Chinese-owned Suniva filed for bankruptcy this month.

This is quite what Peter Zeihan has said was coming.

Trump: We Won’t Protect Foreign Oil Tankers For Free
Countries that get their crude oil via the shipping routes in the Middle East should protect their own ships along the lanes, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday, as tensions between the United States and Iran continue to simmer.
“China gets 91% of its Oil from the Straight, Japan 62%, & many other countries likewise. So why are we protecting the shipping lanes for other countries (many years) for zero compensation,” President Trump tweeted on Monday.“All of these countries should be protecting their own ships on what has always been a dangerous journey. We don’t even need to be there in that the U.S. has just become (by far) the largest producer of Energy anywhere in the world! The U.S. request for Iran is very simple - No Nuclear Weapons and No Further Sponsoring of Terror!” President Trump said.
Earlier this month, two oil tankers—one owned by a Japanese firm and the other by a Norwegian company—were attacked in the Gulf of Oman, just outside the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the open seas. The daily flows of oil through the Strait of Hormuz accounts for around 30 percent of all seaborne-traded crude oil and other liquids.Get an unfair advantage in energy markets

While Iran vehemently denies involvement in the attacks on the two oil tankers, the U.S. is blaming the Islamic Republic of being behind the attacks. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last weekend that the Strait of Hormuz will remain open for all vessels.
Days later, Iran shot down a U.S. drone over the Strait of Hormuz, claiming it had violated Iran’s air space. The U.S. says that the drone was in international air space. The tension increased at the end of last week, sending oil prices surging. The U.S. had apparently prepared a response to the attacks with planned strikes on Iranian targets, before President Trump stopped a planned strike 10 minutes before the strikes, because, he said, they were “not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.”By Tsvetana Paraskova for Oilprice.com
So, a very changing world.
And parts of the legislature is trying to cut off arms sales to a major oil producer.
Not the world I grew up in.

So, America is looking to be in imperial retreat. Good. I wonder if this was one of the things Trump spoke about with the Queen? She does have a lot of experience being the head of an Empire that transitioned into being a Non-Empire.
I wonder how much money America spends into other economies to support foreign military bases? Bring them home, and they can spend the money into America economies.
Use what is abundant and build to last

Well, I think the possibility is that want could happen will rhyme with the above.
What a strange world. When I was young, I read a lot of Sci-Fi. One book I sort of recall, had a future where the USA was so desperate for oil that they would sneak submarines into Russian waters in the Arctic Ocean. Were happy if even after being nuked a bit, they got the oil, were still happy even though the oil they got was sort of radio active. We didn't ever get to that world.
We just let strange people develop shale. Lots of places would have either stopped it, or some strong man would have taken it from them, and very likely killed them.
It pays to let people dream, and have their dreams.
Well, it has worked so far.
Done.

Trump’s evangelical base 81 percent of evangelical Christians voted for Trump in 2016, evangelicals are calling Trump a “modern-day Cyrus.”. Evangelical thinker Lance Wallnau then gives Mitchell his take: Trump is a “modern-day Cyrus,” an ancient Persian king chosen by God to “navigate in chaos. “Trump preached xenophobia, racism, sexism, Islamophobia, homophobia, and more, and the white evangelical base said ‘Amen.’
Rank and file white evangelicals, who make up one-fifth of all registered voters in the U.S., have in fact rallied in favor of the reality TV star-turned-presidential candidate. But a number of high profile evangelical leaders have spoken out against Trump’s campaign, policies, and tactics in recent months.

I've never seen one of these Chinese made Bibles you speak of, but whatever.
Suppose President Trump swore to keep Bible production going on an upside-down, backwards Chinese-made Braille Bible with half the pages missing?
Does it still count?
Sorry, I was channeling my inner Carlin there.
I just checked teh interwebz.
The Bible is available as a free download.
Samsung phones are still made in Korea, so I think our holy rollers will survive the trade war.
What's next, no more flying cargo planes full of rubber dog doo doo out of Hong Kong?

Regulator tells CNN Business the trade war is hurting banks in America's farm states on soybeans, wheat, corn and other agriculture products. Trump administration announced plans to pay $14.5 billion in aid to farmers by the end of August. That relief is on top of the $10 billion in aid that farmers received last year.
Fact check: Trump says China is paying for his tariffs. He's wrong.
China is not paying as its being passed onto U.S. importers, U.S. retailers, U.S. consumers,

The job lose estimate was for job losses a year after Trump imposed a 25% tariff on automobiles and auto parts from every country except for Canada, Mexico and South Korea.
Trump said he was going to help working people but Kamala Harris makes false claim about Trump and auto jobs while some estimate that as many as 700,000 autoworkers were going to lose their job before the end of the year.
90% of the hypothetical 367,000 job losses in the February study were attributable to the possibility of Trump imposing the 25% tariff.
The issue is that we are still losing jobs from other sectors of possible employment

We are being fed a narrative all the time...
Well here's another narrative...go back to the 1930s and you will find across North America and Europe there was a huge increase in living standards for most people. It was a bad time for capitalists, because profits were down, but for most people it was a time when they saw their standard of living rise hugely.
Just saying because we are being fed a narrative now that a recession = regression in living standards. It doesn't.

SpaceNut,
If foreign auto makers weren't putting their manufacturing facilities here in America, they'd either have to drastically downsize or go out of business.
Since when did it become our responsibility to prop up foreign auto makers?
Anyway, that's all irrelevant. Foreign companies don't put their manufacturing plants here in America because of IEEPA. They put them here to save money on transportation costs and to employ a workforce that costs less money for them to maintain. All the foreign auto makers built their facilities in non-union states. Can you guess at why they did that?
Where in America is there no food available? Since we have an unmitigated obesity epidemic here, I'd really love to know.
President Trump is putting the brakes on this globalist / socialist nonsense and the globalists / socialists are throwing a temper tantrum over it. I know the plan, which was working so well, was to drain all of America's capital and resources to prove that capitalism doesn't work, so as to usher in global socialism as the new form of governance / unmitigated stupidity that it's always been, but that plan is rapidly coming to a grinding halt. The globalists / socialists never counted on someone who was actually loyal to Americans who would actually stand up for American interests ever being elected to office.
Somewhere between 5% and 8% of America's economy is foreign trade. The rest is domestic production and consumption.
We do not require trade with China in any form. In point of fact, our economy will be much better off without the one-sided trade deal with China that provides cheap crap in exchange for market access. Precisely why it is that so many Americans love cheap crap is beyond me. If we quit trading with China, their communist party will revert back to the regressive backwards dictatorship it always was, with the ultimate consequence that another socialist / communist system of governance will fail completely without an outside infusion of hundreds of billions of dollars from one-sided trade with a country that does have wealth for communists to plunder.
Anyway, the IEEPA has been used by Presidents since it was signed into law by former President Jimmy Carter and nobody ever said a word about it when former President Obama used it numerous times when he was in office.

Trump said he'd rebuild manufacturing. Now it's in decline. What happened?
Federal Reserve data show is a technical recession, or six-month slump. U.S. manufacturing growth was slowed by Trump’s efforts to aid it: an ongoing trade war and the dissipation of a small boost from the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Gail Tverberg provides an interesting counter perspective here as to why Trump tariffs do make sense.
https://ourfiniteworld.com/2019/05/22/w … e-tariffs/
https://ourfiniteworld.com/2019/06/12/s … rom-china/
I would also add that the trade war has little to do with boosting the wealth of American workers and Trump probably knows this. It is aimed at delaying and blunting China's ability to emerge as a geopolitical rival to the US.
"Plan and prepare for every possibility, and you will never act. It is nobler to have courage as we stumble into half the things we fear than to analyse every possible obstacle and begin nothing. Great things are achieved by embracing great dangers."

The issue is that the rich are getting richer while the remaining are falling towards poverty. The hope of bringing back high tech will not change since those countries can make a product for less for many reasons and even if we say that we could do the same here the corporate greed would remain for the cost of the product even if its costing them less to make it. Prices very rarely ever go down....
Lots of thing rose in price as claimed by the rising cost for transportation due to the high fuel costs 5 or 6 years ago but just how many have gone back down since the price of the fuel for transportation has gone down?

This will not help for sure as the Trump tariffs are set to cost U.S. households $2,000 in 2020, research group finds from the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP).
The Arlington-based nonprofit — which looked at the effect of tariffs on the overall economy and consumers — estimated that by the end of 2019, the trade duties imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump “will have cost the average household $1,315 over a two-year period.” And “when adding the tariffs in effect and the tariffs set to go into effect by the end of 2019, the costs of the tariffs to consumers will be $259.2 billion,” the report stated. “That is, the tariffs will cost the average household $2,031 per year, and will be recurring so long as the tariffs stay in effect.”
“If all tariffs threatened by the Trump administration are imposed, combined with the current tariffs in place, the annual cost to U.S. consumers would be $461.1 billion and the cost for the average household would be $3,614,”
Ouch for the wages which are stagnent and if you are amoung those losing a job this is going to suck even more...

Are jobs for Americans preferable to high unemployment?
When the European and Asian countries place massive tariffs on American-made goods, is that good for their economies?
If it's not, then why do they do it?
