Re: Spammer

It can't hurt. The "report" feature should work. smile

This beats the 1300 spammers that the phpBB test forum had signed up in a week at least. And the link farmers are OCRing our books while they're at it...

BTW, CheckDavid did add a website in his profile, I guess after he posted just in case the software was looking for that. So no worries for missing it. Remember, the key is searching for the nick in double quotes so Google knows to look for it.

Re: Spammer

Are you sure CheckDavid was a spammer? There was someone in the IRC channel using that name a few days ago. We actually had some conversations with about Linux, atmospheric chemistry, and graphene. He seemed glad to have stumbled across the IRC channel and interested in hanging out on NewMars. Was it really all an elaborate ruse?

Re: Spammer

If I was wrong I duely apologize, and ask him to sign up again. There's a "CheckDavid" posting stuff around about making money on the net but on second glance it looks legit, just someone trying to get somewhere and not necessarily spamming. I feel bad now. This would be the second time in a decade I did that (did it once before and the guy was OK with it, a bit perplexed why his count was gone but yeah), but it's uncalled for doing it so soon again after the relaunch. sad

CheckDavid if you're real and reading this please sign back up, it was an honest mistake.

Re: Spammer

Josh, I can pretty much vouch for CheckDavid.  It was actually only at my encouragement that he registered; he is certainly a real person and he seemed to have a legitimate interest in the subject of these forums.

Re: Spammer

He doesn't seem one to get too offended.  Hopefully he'll re-register.

It happens, every once in a while, when you get as many spammers as we do.  You're out of practice, haha.  We all are.

Re: Spammer

Hey guys.  We should have a better process for reporting spammers than posting in this forum.  I set up a feedback@newmars.com alias, why dont we use that for now?  Then Josh C. or I can go in and ban/block them in the admin tool.

Re: Spammer

It seems easier to me to just post in the forum, but I'm willing to try it out.  Whichever is easier for you guys, really.

So, when we see a spammer, just email that address?

Re: Spammer

Yes please, at least for now smile  I am working on adding some plugins also, so we will have some type of "report spam" link on each post/user.

Re: Spammer

Just for the record, there is a "Report" button on the bottom right of each post already.

Re: Spammer

Yes we used the reporting system on phpBB. I loved getting Rxke's little notes. smile

The reporting system here sends an email to a list of people (in Admin options) whenever there's a report.

BTW, CheckDavid was a good sport about my deleting him. Whew. smile

Right but IMHO it is not a very good initial experience for the reportee, and also does not do everything we ultimately need it to.

Re: Spammer

Spammers were busy: http://i.imgur.com/sRuSt.png

Took about 20 mins to ban and report them all to SFS.

About 10 of them weren't already in SFS, the rest were.

Re: Spammer

Yeah, it seems like you'll fit in quite well here.

The forums aren't particularly active at the moment, since we just got back and many of our users have yet to return, but I think you'll find as time goes on that some of the subfora are a good deal more active than others are.  In the meantime, if you have any questions about where a post belongs, either post a question here and it will be answered within a relatively short period of time, or just give it your best guess and if it's badly wrong a mod will move it.  There is some overlap between the subfora, and deciding where to put something can be nuanced, so as long as your topic reasonably could have something to do with where you put it, you should be okay.

Re: Spammer

Here is another group of the potentail spammers.

retro world New member 0 Yesterday
kdcjmprcms New member 0 Today
idpoqqphrg New member 0 Today
dvaqdwefbe New member 0 Today
uoaepsmryi New member 0 Today

But just as dismal as these are the fact that we have 15 pages of zero quantity posters is horrible for a forums discusion quality. Then another 4 pages to get a single post followed by ... you get the picture....

Re: Spammer

Yes, they're all spammers. We are only using ReCAPTCHA as a spam deterrent currently.

Re: Spammer

Odds are they're genuine CAPTCHA farmers. What's annoying is that about 60% of them are already in the SFS database... there were about 35 the past three days. It's no where near as bad as before when the phpBB forum without ReCAPTCHA had 1500 spammers in a week.
