Re: Spammer

Yet another one...

If everyone could post the location of any spam threads they might run across in here it'll make it easier for Bill or myself to purge them. We hit 'em as fast we can, but odds are someone else will always find them first. Thanks in advance.

This must be spam:

I didn’t click on the link though since no description was provided. It is probably better not to click on the link though just incase there is some HTML exploit or if it rewards the poster a monetary value fore every click on the link.

Re: Spammer

Not that I really care, but is it the word people find objectionable, or the idea the idea that this person might talk about it?

It will be interesting to see how Bill and CC judge this one, consdering the individual in question (pic005) has yet to post.

*Member 1124 never posted either (June 10th notification), yet Clark didn't question a different New Mars member's notification of Member 1124 as a spammer.

BTW, Admin, I did receive pornographic solicitations from the party in question in my Messenger Inbox.  They've been deleted.

Would an adult in the audience please explain why I should have questioned then? Does my previously not asking a question invalidate my opportunity to ask questions in the future?

This is just bizarre.

BTW, Admin, I did receive pornographic solicitations from the party in question in my Messenger Inbox.  They've been deleted.

Hmmm, I didn't. Maybe Cindy was targeted. Or maybe she is confused, she has been confused about who has emailed her in the past.

But then, if she says so, then it must be. Right?

Re: Spammer

Cindy, with the way Ikonboard is set up I really can't do much to a member who hasn't posted.

The Super Administrator signal must be lit.   big_smile

Clark, don't be an ass. Cindy voiced a legitimate complaint, how that constitutes an invitation to trollish badgering is beyond me.

Re: Spammer

Just so I understand you, where did Cindy voice a legitimate complaint?

I also fail to see where I might have been badgering. Is asking a legitimate question considered badgering? I mean, you, Bill, and Josh have pretty much free reign to delete and ban at your discretion. There isn't much opportunity to discuss when and how those powers are used- it is left to your discretion.

I have no problem with any of that, but I prefer to understand how things are determined (considering my own experiences with the long arm of the law).

Thus I stated it would be interesting to see what the admins would do.

Re: Spammer

Granted, the guidelines could probably use a bit more clarification than the current just and wise censor approach.

So to begin, if Cindy complains that someone sent pornographic content to her account I'm inclined to think it should be dealt with. If the member in question is here for no other reason than to post spam, they ought to be banned outright. Very likely this is such a case.

This:

Hmmm, I didn't. Maybe Cindy was targeted. Or maybe she is confused, she has been confused about who has emailed her in the past.

But then, if she says so, then it must be. Right?

Is just obnoxious, what's the fascination with trying to irritate her?

Re: Spammer

Clark, my first reading I think you are trying to stir things up like you usually do which often seems a good stimulus for conversation. My second reading I wonder if you were joking and Cindy is taking it too seriously.  Am I missing something? Is this a carryover from another argument between Clark and Cindy? I haven’t been too active on these boards lately.

Re: Spammer

I’m not trying to irritate anyone.

However, that particular comment is the result of my own personal experience with Cindy. She lied once before, so I am inclined to believe she is lying now.

Perhaps it is me, but it seems rather odd that a person would create an account here at NewMars only to send “pornographic solicitations” to one person. Thus, either Cindy was targeted, or she is making the whole damn thing up.

I didn’t receive any such solicitations (and, yes, my feelings are hurt). It doesn’t seem like anyone else is reporting receiving such solicitations. [shrug]

My own personal opinion, as always.

May I suggest that automatic signup is occurring with php scripts and other typs of programs designed to infiltrate boards and market to the people through PM’s. Look at the name of the newest sign up.
http://www.newmars.com/cgi-bin/ikonboar … 57]Pics005
The name alone is a dead give away of some kind of pornographic spam bot.
For this user I find:
Interests Incest
Location Incest
Wich are more clues of a pornographic spam bot.

If anyone has used ICQ anytime in the last 5 years or so they will recall getting all kinds of  bots pretending to be people designed to get people to view a particular web site. My favorite is hi, I am so and so come see my pic at. I suggest that although this may not be a problem now in the not to distance future we may have to change the message board software to software that has graphics designed to prevent automatic sign up and perhaps email verification on top of that. As much as you may not be like being falsely accused of stuff Clark I don’t think Cindy is making up that she is receiving solicitations to view pornographic websites. What she may be mistaken about is weather it is a person or a program sending her the solicitations.

Re: Spammer

Yeah, the board needs new software.
This IkonBoard stuff is not up to it, IMHO...

-thread corruption,
-'new posts' functionality that sXXXX big time, IMO
-an utterly moronic topic-tracker,
-etc...

Good or excusable for a small board, but with over 1000 members, might be better to use another boardengine.

Re: Spammer

Apparently we are infested with spam bots. If so, how big is the board then?

I think everyone should take an anti-spam-bot test, to prove they are a person and not a machine.

I will probably fail.

Daisy, Daisy, give me your love so true...

I can feeeeeeel Dave, I can feeeeel.

Anyway, if it were a spam bot, why would it only send PM's to one person on the board? My understanding of these things (which, granted, is rather limited) is that they would not be able to discern between specific individuals.

So if this member was a spam bot generating bad PM's, wouldn't more members be receiving PM's? I didn't receive any such PM, has anyone else? Has there been any other reports to the Admin's about receiving PM's from this or any other questionable newmember?

Interesting....

Re: Spammer

clark, you are being a bit anal here, sorry buddy, but ya are. pics005 posted on another forum (with links to incest sites) I go to just last night, so it's obviously a bot. And one that is... quite pervasive, I have no idea how it got from that other forum (it is completely unrelated to anything Mars) to this one so quickly. I have no doubt that it's spreading throughout the internet posting that crap. Perhaps if we leave it alone it will get to you? smile

But I'm not giving it that chance, it is already deleted. I have no reson to disbelieve Cindy given that the same user has been spaming another forum I go to. If you want to discuss incest and be all philosophical, feel free to start a thread in Civilization and Culture, okay? Let's keep this thread about spam.

Rxke, I'm actually going to put phpBB (if I can, not sure if we have PHP) on a temp place here and see how people like it. I agree that IkonBoard has outlived its life, considerably. Would you have any other suggestions as to what software would be better (perferrably free).

edit: and it should be noted that IkonBoard has not been known to serve private messages totally adequately, Bill White being the most notable example, not being able to recieve any messages at all. More reason to try another board system.

Re: Spammer

Let's keep this thread about spam, indeed!

All apologies, of course, to dear, dear, Cindy. I have greatly maligned her character by insinuainting that such an honest, forth-right, and married woman such as she would ever stoop to such an odious behavior as making an unfounded accusation against another member of the newmars community. She always tells the truth, at least as far as she can tell.

I will take your advice to heart Josh, and make every attempt in the future to search the nether reaches of electronic space to determine the comings and goings of each and every latest pornographic spam-bot, or real person, that comes through our doors. I should have simply searched for links to incest [smack forehead]. That was my grave, grave mistake.

To think that such a simple misunderstanding could result from my lack of curiosity into the depths of sexual depravity related to incest. I mean, as a full blooded male, I should have just jumped on this, a singular opportunity to legitimately look into incest. Perhaps I simply wasn't anal enough.

I promise you, Cindy, and all others, that I will endeavor to be more anal when it comes to searching out pornography when it relates to Mars in general, and NewMars in particular.

Of course, far be it from me to discuss the decisions of the upright and benevolent Administrators whose very acts of power are only exercised for the benefit of the entire community here, and not for any one individual. Far be it from me to question how decisions are made or arrived at. I for one feel confident knowing we have you willing to delete any offending post, or in the latest case, deleting and banning users who have never made a post. I think this is a progressive view, what with the wide cultural mix of individuals from across the globe who find themselves joined together by a common love for Humans on Mars. Taking a stand against certain cultural taboo's helps define the community as what we want it to be.

But since we are taking this step, should I assume that anyone who writes in their "interest" section of their newmars profile can be banned if others complain about what they write? Is some level of evidence necessary to corroborate accusations of off-board harassment prior to the action of deletion or banning? What type of evidence is necessary? What level of corroboration is sufficient?

If this spam-bot were a real person, who never posted a single thing, or PM'ed a single person here, would you still delete their account based on what they wrote in their profile?

I don't expect an answer of course; I'm just being anal, or perhaps an ass (some seem fixated on the posterior metaphor for some strange reason). But then, this is about spam, and these questions are about how actions are determined related to spam.

And Cindy, be a dear, please stop sending email to me. Of course if you do, have the decency to let me know you've sent it to my email account. I don't check it all that often, and didn't get your last one from June 22 until today.

Thanks in advance for this kind consideration. Cya... is that how it goes Cindy?

There is no need for this level of sarcasm. I don’t think a message board is a place to air personal disputes. If Cindy falsely accused you of something either intentionally or mistakenly get over it. It does not give you an excuse to higjack topics and behave in a childish fashion.

Clark, spam bots are a reality and they are growing more sophisticated all the time. If suitable counter measures aren’t taken to filter out spam bouts then the boards will suffer. Spam bots were the reason I stop using ICQ. I don’t like talking to a program. Especially one trying to sell me something. The fact that ICQ allowed spam bots to roam freely made me not trust that they were serious about security and was another reason I avoided ICQ software in the future. You can keep your ideals, I want insurances in some reasonable level of quality in the posts on the boards I read.

To think that such a simple misunderstanding could result from my lack of curiosity into the depths of sexual depravity related to incest. I mean, as a full blooded male, I should have just jumped on this, a singular opportunity to legitimately look into incest. Perhaps I simply wasn't anal enough.

I usually think of you as a very good writer but your opening idea does not realate to you closing idea in this paragraph. Contain your emotions enough to maintain the quality writing I expect from your posts. In response to your opening sentence the fact that you aren’t giving Cindy the benefit of the doubt that was a misunderstanding is just as bad as Cindy not giving you the benefit of the doubt.

Clark I am sure if the account created was for a legitimate poster then the poster could contact the administrator to gain access back to the boards. These boards are suppose to be about mars anyway, and I think it is respectful of any person joining a form to be careful with there language and actions until they toughly understand the rules of the forum.

I don’t think in a board about space that such interests are appropriate to paste anyway. Anyone wishing to discuss such topics should make sure that they present them in an intelligent non explicit fashion and that there posts have some level of intellectual merit.

If this spam-bot were a real person, who never posted a single thing, or PM'ed a single person here, would you still delete their account based on what they wrote in their profile?

Why not? I think perhaps some email could be sent to the poster explaining why there account was deleted and how they can get access back to the forum may be prudent. Let me ask you this. Do you have a junk mail filter on your email box. Do you read every message you delete. What about all the legitimate emails you may delete because they fit the mold of what you think might be spam.

I don't expect an answer of course; I'm just being anal, or perhaps an ass (some seem fixated on the posterior metaphor for some strange reason). But then, this is about spam, and these questions are about how actions are determined related to spam.

I know I missed the drama if there was any but did anyone call you an ass? I think you are taking this way to personally.

And Cindy, be a dear, please stop sending email to me. Of course if you do, have the decency to let me know you've sent it to my email account. I don't check it all that often, and didn't get your last one from June 22 until today.

Perhaps Cindy is acting inappropriately too but as far as I see so far at least she is keeping it off the message boards.
