#126 Re: Meta New Mars » The great crash » 2012-08-16 23:13:02

Just for the record.... I inherited a hard drive from the previous webmaster of Mars Society which has the data from 2008-crash.  We are in the process of recovering it.  It's on a CentOS partition with no file table, but the files are there.  I have gone a few rounds trying to get volunteer help to recover them, so I am probably just going to take it down to "Hard Drives Northwest" soon and pay the $ myself.

The new NewMars.com is hosted on the Mars Society's new Dreamhost account.  If you have never heard of Dreamhost, check them out.  I have been using them for 12+ years and they are amazing.  We have full backups and so the same event should never happen again.  Plus, we have backing from the Mars Society HQ (straight up to Dr. Robert Zubrin himself) to keep these forums running.  So that is what we are going to do smile

Josh Cryer posted a note elsewhere in here which detailed the forums structure prior to the server crash.  According to his memory, it was:

"Newmars: Meta Newmars (Other subfora removed and merged elsewhere)
Earth (Which was moved up; personally I think it's better to leave the Acheron section higher given that it gets many more posts): Same as now, except Space Politics was moved.
Acheron: Same as now
Underhill: (Not So) Free Chat, given the politics rule*, Science and Technology, Space Politics
The First Hundred: Same"

---

Should we make these changes?  Or what is a better hierarchy?

Thanks,
-James

Thats a great suggestion.  As an aside, the crew & mission support at MDRS (mars desert research station) are looking at using these forums to do their routine work.  So we might be able to tap into them to assist with moderation.  They are very good at doing the 24/7 sentry thing smile

Just wanted to post a note that we'd like to hear from any interested forum members on how to improve these forums.  You can reply to this thread or send me a private email to 'webmaster@marssociety.org'.  That will open a ticket using our new ticketing system so somebody will be sure to get back to you on your suggestion.

Thanks,

Hi all,

I am working with some of the other volunteers on the Mars Society Web team to create a new front page for NewMars.com.  Its main goal is to make it VERY easy enter & participate in the forums system and ease registration for new users.  A secondary goal is to allow us to host articles, images, and other content there.  To that end, we are looking at building the front page in Wordpress or Drupal, which are both Content Management Systems (CMS).  What do you think about this plan, or how could we do it better?

One thing we might look into doing is showing the most active discussion threads and/or groups on the main page.  Let me know if you have any other ideas.

Thanks in advance,
-James

#131 Re: Meta New Mars » Rebirth of New Mars; Establishment of New Mars Editorial Board » 2012-08-08 18:27:40

I recently attended the 15th Annual International Mars Society Convention in Pasadena, CA.  It culminated with the landing on Mars of the Curiosity Rover.  I discussed the fact that NewMars.com was back online with several of the people there, including Susan Martin, who is now the Executive Director of the Mars Society.  I also mentioned that we are still trying to recover the data from the 2007-2010 time period for these forums, with not much luck.  We probably will just go on with what is here now -- with the users/discussions/groups hierarchy in its current state, and moderators that are currently designated.

We are going to proceed with establishing an editorial board for the New Mars Journal and these discussion forums.  The editorial board will ensure that there are active moderators for each of the Discussion areas, and will reestablish the New Mars Journal with new content and articles.  We will implement the Editorial Board as a restricted-access Google Group under @marssociety.org.  The exact address is TBD.  This is done not only to speed communication among the board but also to create an audit trail and ease in posting any meeting minutes here.

If you are interested in serving on the New Mars editorial board, please email me - jburk@marssociety.org -- I plan to invite Adrian Hon and Richard Wagner, who both were previous editors in chief of the New Mars Journal.

We are open to suggestions on how to best improve these discussion forums.  Use the main Suggestion Box -- You can open a support ticket with our IT staff as well by emailing webmaster@marssociety.org -- that will open a ticket in our new support system and somebody will be sure to get back to you in response to your suggestion.

Thanks,

#133 Re: Meta New Mars » Origins of newmars » 2011-11-25 03:40:34

I've been telling this story so much, I figured I would post it here.

New Mars Journal (newmars.com) started as the official "field journal" of the mars society way back when the society was founded in 1998. It was edited by Richard Wagner and had submissions from Robert Zubrin and several other Mars scientists, researchers, and updates on the Mars Society itself.

You can see the original site and a couple additional snapshots via the internet service Archive.org here:

http://web.archive.org/web/199812021934 … wmars.com/
and
http://web.archive.org/web/199812120313 … wmars.com/
and
http://web.archive.org/web/199901251016 … wmars.com/

In late 2001, Adrian Hon took over the reins from Wagner.  He redesigned the site and set up the Forums for the first time.  You can browse this iteration of newmars here:

http://web.archive.org/web/200201181134 … wmars.com/
and
http://web.archive.org/web/200209291953 … wmars.com/
and
http://web.archive.org/web/200710121814 … wmars.com/

I went to the '99 conference and met (among others) Richard Wagner.  I later met & cooresponded with Adrian Hon.  I found them both to be of excellent character and nothing has made me change my mind since then smile  I hope both of them will be on our editorial board; I know Adrian has already been invited.

As the years went on, Adrian apparently got busy with other stuff and turned the Forum reins over to the moderators, including Josh Cryer and some of the other folks that have just returned.  There was another redesign in 2008, but it was pretty bare-bones.  In our discussions at the Mars Society HQ, we all favored restoring the main page of the site back to the design that Adrian Hon created, since it would be most recognizable to our returning user base.

Unforunately, a major server for the Mars Society crashed in January 2011... as a result of that, newmars.com was offline for most of 2011.

Here is newmars just before the crash.  We are working to restore this current iteration of the site to as close to this as possible ATM
http://web.archive.org/web/201004191632 … om/forums/

In 2011, I was appointed as Webmaster by the HQ staff (including Dr. Zubrin) and one of my first work-items was to recover any data from the failed server, and use it to restore our archival websites (such as for FMARS and MDRS) but also to restore the New Mars site & forums.  As Dr. Zubrin stated (in a private email to me), Newmars.com "once hosted the forums system for the Mars Society, and can do so again..."

Good to see the forums back up guys smile

I just want to clarify a couple of things too. First, the Newmars forums have a depth of discussion and detail and a large list of members they have built up over the last 10 years. But beyond the discussions I am sure there are many members here who hope the Mars Society might adopt some of the ideas here. I wonder if this has ever happened or what role the Mars Society views this forum as useful for? Many here are not paying members of the Mars Society, but just consider the time they have devoted here. If we translated that into monetry terms, this would far outweigh any cash donation.

My hope us that this forum does find a useful purpose beyond discussions but I guess we will wait and see on that. In regards to the MarsDrive site and forum, we did serve as a temporary home for many lost members here for the last year so I hope you guys don't forget about us smile

We currently have about 320 active members and a couple dozen more regular posters so we have built up over the last few years. We do allow political discussions, and I think that is due to where we are at right now. If we were larger and found it a big problem we might make the same choice as New Mars. But discussions are open and there are no membership fees are needed. Our focus is also slightly different, more on searching for private sector alternative plans for Mars. So don't forget us guys, and I'll keep an eye on how things go here. Overall I think the rebirth of this forum is a good thing for the cause. smile

Hi Marsman, and welcome [back] to the New Mars Forums!!!  Certainly, I have personally been a fan of MarsDrive since it started.  Thanks for all your comments, and I completely agree that the more Mars-related sites & discussion forums that are out there, the better.

I think what the Mars Society can bring to the table in sponsoring these forums is the engagement of our thousands of members, and (what I'm excited about) all the very active members of the Mars Society, some of which are science-based folks, or folks that are helping with MDRS and FMARS; folks that have lots of experience with cross-team and cross-group collaboration.  As we all (together) get the Editorial Board established for these forums, it will be able to set policies that foster open discussions about all the aspects of Humans to Mars, as well as the overall picture of space exploration our fledgling 21st century.  There have been some interesting thoughts here on how to handle political discussions and I know that we all benefit from these discussions, and the ultimate policies and environment in these forums will benefit from all these perspectives now.

Best and happy thanksgiving to all smile  1:07am where I am and it's been a LONG day smile

This discussion is a good example of the types of issues the moderators (as a part of the Editorial Board) will be able to come to a consensus on and implement.  I agree that political discussions can get out of hand, and there is not really any place for that in a mars exploration-specific forum such as this one.  Just my humble opinion though and I will ultimately be one voice out of many, who don't necessarily agree on everything.

Hi guys,

Rxke, I am sorry to hear about your membership renewal issue.  Please send me a screenshot of the error if you can. I can also confirm that your membership was credited for the 3 years.  Soon we will have a members area where you will be able to see that yourself.

I can speak for whether the Mars Society is healthy or not, it definitely is.  Membership is already up from last year.  We are working towards the new field season of MDRS and will have some announcements soon on the 2012 convention activities.

When I joined as Webmaster in July, there was a huge backlog of work which we are still getting through.  Restoring the New Mars Forums was one of those items that I am happy to be able to check off the list. smile

Thanks,
-James

Hi Grypd, what is your suggestion please?  That we continue to moderate our forums?

Hi all,

Here is an awesome video done by NASA/JPL which demonstrates the Rover's launch and Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) phase.  I highly recommend it:

What's with the "atom live topics feed" at the bottom right of the forums?  It doesn't seem to be working properly, seeing as it just displays a bunch of code when you click on it.  (Also, what is it supposed to do?)

Atom is a feed format much like RSS.  The code you are seeing allows you to "subscribe" to the current forum discussion using your web browser (try clicking the link with Firefox) or an RSS feed reader.  Here is an explanation of what RSS and Atom can do: http://www.whatisrss.com/

Hey guys.  We should have a better process for reporting spammers than posting in this forum.  I set up a feedback@newmars.com alias, why dont we use that for now?  Then Josh C. or I can go in and ban/block them in the admin tool.

The Editorial Board of New Mars Journal has been chartered to maintain the website and its forums system.  It will be comprised of the New Mars Forum moderators and key contributors to the New Mars website (as we will continue to host Articles and special features outside of the Forums on newmars.com.)  It will be empowered to make decisions and set policies that effect the site & forums.  The Editorial Board will be expanded soon and we will be accepting applications from any interested Mars Society member in good standing (ie. membership dues paid).  We will finalize the details of this in the next week or so.

Hello all,

We are pleased to announce that the New Mars Forums have been re-opened, following the work of several volunteers to restore the previous discussions and set up a new forums system. The Mars Society extends its thanks to the following individuals for their assistance in this effort:

James Burk
Josh Cryer
Lucinda Land
Susan Martin
Richard Offer

After the crippling server crash that occurred in early 2011, we are still working to restore the discussions from the period June 2008 until the crash.  We hope to integrate those discussions as soon as possible.  We are also restoring and building out the rest of the New Mars Journal blog & website, and eventually hope to re-publish all previous content that was available on NewMars.com so it can become part of the Mars Society's historical record.

As part of the forums relaunch, we are establishing an Editorial Board for the New Mars Journal.  Initially the editorial board will be comprised of a few key individuals (including some of the folks above, and some of our past volunteers and forum moderators.)  Every active member of the Mars Society will be invited to apply to become a moderator in the New Mars Forums and to join our Editorial Board.  We will be publishing more details on this soon.

If you have any questions, comments, or feedback on the new Forums system, please feel free to send us an email using the address feedback@newmars.com

Thanks,

The Mars Society Staff
