yeah we are talking 100 years ahead there
Publication Date:March 4, 2012
Mars, to our current knowledge, does not contain any native populations. However, the Earthlings arriving there, once again, will bring their own institutions with them. In this case, we may even surmise, more than one system, given the proliferation of space technology among nations of diverse backgrounds. That also means there will be more than one culture, as well as Governance method. Does that herald a clash of cultures and Governance modes? At that point, it becomes necessary to spend some overview time, looking at the behavior on Earth.
there are no customer reviews on the book at all, has anyone on here read it?
Speaking of the old boards, it would be fantastic if the pm function could be ressurected. It was quite useful and sending someone an email is not the same.
a PM function is standard fare on any forum
Has it been disabled or is it broken?
hi Koeng, don't know if you saw the 2 minutes video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxpTA9v7s34 it includes actual black and white photos from the 1971: Apollo 15 mission of the moon surface
The object seen is real (and huge) but whatever you believe it to be - there is a definite lack of discussion!
looks like a forum designed in 1994
nice to see their names and the remark "ASK US ANYTHING" though
Modules
11:00 – 11:30 a.m.: Registration
11:30 – 12:00 a.m.: What’s SpaceUp? What will happen today?
We will have 30 mins modules. You will fill up the session grid spontaneously.
•3 x T-5 Talk w/ 5 mins Q&A
•20 mins Talk w/ 10 mins Q&A
•30 mins Discussions18:00 – 20:00 p.m.: Mingling
Despite being in Germany we will leave it up to you in which language you will present and discuss. But you should consider to use a language the majority of us will understand (German and English). We will also promise not to speak in Swabian, the regional dialect.
60 seconds to land
This is no alternative for attending this great SpaceUp, but we all know the problem that we can’t be in two places at the exact same time (unless someone invents teleportation!). So we want to give you the opportunity to record a video up to 60 seconds about a space topic. You can talk about your project or just say hello to the space enthusiasts attending SpaceUp Stuttgart. We will play your videos during coffee breaks or start a discussion from that.
this whole format reminds me of an unconference that I went to in London a couple of years back, it was AWESOME!!!
If it was in London I would go but Germany too far, nevertheless this sounds like a great event and I hope you get a good attendance
the one I went to in London, we all met up, had a 30 minute session first; deciding what the rest of the day's sessions would be and everybody was very constructive and friendly, very enjoyable, seems like this one goes from the same template!!
GOOD LUCK Hornig I would love to hear how it goes
cheers Rob
They don't plan to resupply Mars. The colony would extract water from the soil, recycle used water, and extract oxygen from water. Food would be produced on Mars
Rob in your opinion, after they land the first 4 contenders, would they really be able to extract water from the soil, recycle used water, and extract oxygen from water? Food would be produced on Mars? do you think that's realistic?
To me, I hope this thing gets off the ground BUT it could pan out to be the biggest real life horror film of them all
Marsman yes good comments and correct, for me being a member of a forum takes greater effort and commitment than being a Facebooker or a Twitterer
to me - we have a new generation of people, the vast majority of whom are used to sending a txt on their mobile phone, that is fast, brief and requires a minimum of effort
FAST and minimum of effort now seems to be the "test" and Facebook and Twitter can be seen for that
where are the posts on FB and Twitter that were made 1 year ago? where are the discussions on FB and Twitter that were made 1 MONTH AGO?
because Forums "demand" slightly more effort/ time and commitment than all other "popular" social media - they have dropped to the bottom of the pile there's no going back it seems
From what I understand, here is the timeline of this incredible discovery:
1971, Apollo 15 takes footage of the moon surface. Images published from that, show (from far off) a huge 2 mile long cigar shaped object on the surface, at a crater.
1972, last official NASA mission to the Moon (Apollo 17).
1976, secret Apollo 20 mission to the moon, to explore above "object" - better, closer photos and film taken during that mission.
2007, a veteran member of NASA (an American or Soviet former technician, who worked as insider during the 70s on Space classified missions) breaks the silence and uploads material onto YOUTUBE to bring this discovery to the public.
THE CRITICAL ISSUES AT HAND NOW
The photos taken in 1971 (taken from far off) are genuine and accepted as such. But what the 2 mile long cigar shaped object on the surface at the crater IS, still remains in dispute (as NASA deny that there even was an Apollo 20 mission).
the new photos that emerged in 2007 and the new video showing closer detail of the object, are controversial.
the dimensions of the object are colossal, 2 miles long and as high as the Eiffel tower, this thing is big, pummelled by meteorites over millions of years, what it is, may already be known to the chosen few.
"The insider" alleges the age of the craft to be 1 billion years and asserts that when astronauts began to enter the craft to explore it, they discovered an earlier exploration had already occurred
These are the critical issues and however you feel about them, they deserve careful consideration
good point, maybe with [img not sure
Good to see the forum back up and running. A great video I found.
Vincent who is the guy in the photo who shows at about 1 minute? intriguing video alright
nah and quite honestly seeing these images is far more interesting with the thought that MARS ONE could get off the ground in our life time
here's to the hope that someone will make an alternative ENERGY SOURCE e.g. Hydrogen, now THAT would make my day
The worst thing about it is that the vast majority of civilians in the named countries are ignorant
this has always been the case throughout history and in the case of Iran what can their civilians do anyway? they did not even vote that President IN, he falsified the elections to stay in power! where do they go from there?
as a matter of interest what is the software used for these forums?
Some members obviously have huge technical know how and quite often this comes out in threads, to newcomers threads littered with hugely technical explanations and arguments can be a put off
but then, better that then the other way around
ok what is the old newmars Facebook ?
anymore info on that?
The earliest message seems to be this one dated Sep 04, 2001 8:38 am by John Creighton.
Should we celebrate 4 September as newmars day?
well I clicked on it and it says
All forums seem to have taken a hit to Facebook and Twitter who have cost us dear
can we have avatars back on now please? is the maintenance done now?
Check out this powerpoint:
it's a 6MB download but as Rob says is very interesting
so NASA would pay for this rather than a Mars landing?
The Introductory Video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6QoEEGyS … re=related.
wow have you watched that video? honestly? that is amazing!! most convincing!!
now for the bad news
there is a page on WIKIPEDIA focusing on MARS-ONE but the EDITORS have grave doubts!!!
EDITOR 1 SAYS "This is not adding up.
The Mars One web site, the associated online discussion forum, and that I have something more than a clue about manned space-flight-- this is either embarrassingly naive or a hoax. It reminds me of Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation. Slick graphics to capture the imagination, one "name," and no substance.
REPLY FROM EDITOR 2
The concern is that the reporting-- the sources-- are doing just the same. That is they are not applying critical thinking, but and instead relying on the one source. The only primary source is the material found on the Mars One web site. There is little to no analysis involved in those secondary sources.
A one way trip is not going to happen, for several reasons. One is moral/legal-- manslaughter charges loom. And for that reason, alone, both funding and access will be denied due to the legal liability and moral culpability of the participants.
Two, by any other name, it is still a suicide mission and so civilian volunteers are likely to be, by default, psychologically unfit for such a mission.
Technical issues are glossed... if mentioned at all. Robot tractors capable of lifting and then traveling up to twenty miles over unknown terrain carrying the weight of a crewed Dragon capsule?
Radiation shielding in transit and on the surface?
The enormous quantities of water and oxygen/hydrogen and food which must be carried and then regularly sent, recovered and transported should they survive to the surface?
What if a contractor goes out of business and so supply shipment are no longer possible?
For a reality TV show? There is the indicator that this is about something other than is admitted in the conception.
EDITOR 3 CHIMES IN:
I don't see any legal/moral issues because people pay money to do foolish and dangerous things everyday. For example, many people have died climbing Everest, some of them would have been physically incapable of it, and should never have tried. But, has anyone ever been charged with a criminal offence?
Yes, if Mars is to be colonised, then it stands to reason that many people will die doing so. This is nothing new, and hasn't prevented mankind from making other achievements. You can't say that these people are "psychologically unfit for such a mission" because you are talking about unspecified people. We don't know what colour their hair is, let alone their mental state.
The technical issues aren't mentioned much, because these issues are to be solved by their suppliers. British Airways doesn't need to know how to make aircraft fly, they just buy planes. Also, the weight of a capsule would be far less on Mars, due to gravity being 0.38 of Earth's gravity. Landing people safely on Mars is likely to be far more difficult than moving capsules around.
Shielding out radiation is possible. We already do that in space, on the space station, for example.
They don't plan to resupply Mars. The colony would extract water from the soil, recycle used water, and extract oxygen from water. Food would be produced on Mars.
EDITOR 4 ARGUES:
"Shielding out radiation is possible. We already do that in space, on the space station, for example." Wrong. The ISS is protected mostly by Earth's magnetosphere, which is absent on Mars. Any colonists would need at least 7 meters of soil for protection above their capsules.
EDITOR 3 COMES BACK
Wrong? Not all. As you have said yourself, radiation can be shielded using a layer of soil. There is no shortage of soil on Mars. Danrok
EDITOR 4 CHIDES
Danrok, there is a massive shortage of soil between earth and Mars. That is where you need the shielding. And that shielding is going to be heavy, thick, or otherwise extremely expensive using current technology READ MORE FROM THE EDITORS ARE THE EDITORS RIGHT?
I just want to point out that Mars is a poor place to look for life not related to Earth life. AGREED
A poor place to look for evidence of life from non-life. AGREED
And I don't want my tax money spent to promote a social/socialist agenda to justify the modification of how we live with social experiments. DEFINITELY
I am passionate about colonising Mars and am at the front of the queue to see a manned mission land on Mars (finally) but we are in a world austerity crisis right now, can we afford it?
going back to the original post
Did Mars finally have life in its surface when we sent all those space probes/rovers/whatever to Mars? I think bacterias from Earth came to Mars along with the space probes that landed there
yes as reported in the press NASA cocked up and if any of these Rovers hit water, Earth Bacteria will be deposited more than likely (if it hasn't been already)
http://www.tgdaily.com/space-features/6 … al-funding the pods look pretty basic
But I guess basic means less possibility of failure

I think it's very stupid plan "one way ticket" I mean if they're already there why not bring them back? I say this mostly because yeah it's durable when you're younger but what when you're over 60 or 70 or even 80 years old and living on Mars?! It's certain that old people would be a huge drag for other people living there
why not bring them back? are you serious? how about the cost? but on the other hand It's certain that old people would be a huge drag for other people living there, errrrr yeah that is a startling thought
I always thought that the forums was the best part of Mars Society site anyway !!
Newly registered can also be prevented from accessing PM until their account is fully approved, great facility in this SPAM TORRENTING world we live in
Spam seems well controlled now to my eyes but Q+A Captcha seems the solution in 2012 - 2013 :-)
no need to create a different website, just use Q+A Captcha, Webmaster what is your opinion?
