Situations like the colonization of Mars was not why the UN was formed. The UN was formed to try and maintain peace in the world, and try to give a semblance of equality after World War II, when america had basically become the ruling power of the world.
In the beginning of the martian colonizartion process, one would probably at first have city states, each with their own charters or what not. Probably these colonies would be corporate in nature to exploit resources or whatnot, so I really don't see the need for some large UN intervention...eventually Mars will become its own world politically and globally, but that will not occur until there is a critical mass of people there.
Speaking of a Martian Government, why print money at all? By then everything will probably be electronically handled, with everyone having an ID card that also serves as a credit/debit card, or even an ID chip. And do you truly want to envision the spectre of a war in space? Death on such a large scale...humanity continues to...never mind.
And about the laws on such on Mars, they will obviously be different than those of earth, not only because of the differeing peoples, but because it is a frontier environment. IN a frontier environment, much more is tolerated, or has that aspect of the frontier factor been forgotten?
The UN is a defunct organization that exists to give an expression of the international sentiment of some nations in the world today. It, by itself, has almost no power other than what it is given. If there truly is to be a global government, the UN must be scrapped, and a new organization begun. I do not believe that the UN should be given control over Mars or whatnot, perhaps simply have COPUOS pass a few general restrictions on the no-man lands of space itself, but leave the colonies free to govern themselves
If you removed the inhibition to human freedom, humanity just might prosper, for what is in the interest of many, may be indeed what is in the interest of the one.
If you continue the strictures that bind humanity to illogical and infuriating rules, you will merely encourage people to flout these rules.
And America is by no means truly democratic...we are controlled by the presence of the mass media, and we elect "representatives" who change their viewpoint every week for the sake of approval ratings. Furthermore, what is a political campaign but a pack of lies force-fed to the populace, and what is the government as it is now (for the most part), but an instrument for the wealthy in-group to maintain its control?
And why must a state be the one to determine what a person aspires to? Cannot a person aspire to great heights on his or her own? Even in the absence of a so-called "state", there will always be society, which will continue to regulate itself so that the privilleged will continue to rule in fact if not in name
In just several decades oil will have run out, and we will have switched to other fossil fuels. But what when we run out of those? Those in power use their control over fossil fuels to continue their iron-fisted rule over the establishment, and what when it is all over? The end of fossil fuel is not the end of civilisation as we know it, but the tight-fisted control of civilization known to the establishment.
Day after day, the establishment sinks money into war, into propoganda, and into fruitless causes. If only say 1% of what was being given to the military were used for the development of space and space infrastructure (especially energy), we would have orbital settlements and Solar Power Satellites by now.
Most things being developed for "science" nowadays will find a military application. Indeed, consider "the Grand Challenge" of DARPA (to build a autonomous vehicle that can navigate a 350 mile course in 10 hours)...its all related to the establishment.
What we have to worry about is not fossil fuels (i guarantee that there will ba a solution to that that will be exploited), but the continued exploitation of our country for the desires and goals of the establishment.
mmm...frog is tasty indeed
ah yes...it all comes back now...
I suppose we'll know by next year, when they're supposed to launch the thing
so do you know any MDs who are also Mars enthusiasts?
i've heard of NEAP, yes, but i'm not sure as to its progress...perhaps inquiring to SpaceDev, the company running the projectr might be useful.
off the top of my head...try www.permanent.com for some information
for more detailed info, i'll have to search my database...it going to take a while...i have many many gigabytes of stuff on there...
We should just send humans...AIs are too simple to deal with the mars terrain, and unless you have people on-site, it will take far too long for a radio message to go through.
could you elaborate on what the pic means?
yeah...there was that military breeder reactor that almost caused a nuclear explosion.
Three mile island is considered a major nuclear accident because it almost caused a meltdown i think.
perhaps within a span of 50 years or so...i mean the technology was patented in the 1950s, so perhaps by then...
Ah...so you propose putting a colony into a lava tube, or a ravine such as Noctis Labyrinthe...
I would be a good idea, provided that you can find a suitable lava tube.
Hmm...there may be volcanic activity, but i wouldn't count on it at the moment

Its quite amusing how people will overlook the harsh realities of international politics and the balance of power...
Well...in the world of politics, that is very true...
Youth...please join JSA and help make space exploration a part of our platform, so that the politicians will listen. Long ago, we were able to give 18 year olds the vote...if we stand together, we can help to make manned missions to mars a reality. Remember...we control the future groups...so become aware and become activists...
The obstacle is not insurmountable, but it means that compasses and traditional forms of navigation will not work. In their stead, i suggest a constellation of satellites to act as an Areo-Positioning System (Areo instead of Geo, Mars instead of Earth).
And yes, there will be leakage of the atmosphere into space. One of my colleagues calculated a decay rate of approx 90 years...so the struggle to terraform must be a dynamic one, in constant motion. Simply establishing a terraformed world is not enough...we must maintain the world.
mars...a world that has inspired so many myths and legends...a world of hope, and a world of mystery
everyone and everything is limited, whether man or machine. The day we create true AI is a day that will be seen as a duality: a day of joy and a day of sorrow
Humanity fears what it cannot understand, and it will fear AI, which will make robots perhaps the equals of humans. And if they become equals, self aware, intelligent, etc...then humans will have to accept them as being so...and with no 3 rule of robotics this time, for it would not be ethical to have them as second-class citizens if they really were possessed of artficial-conciousnesses.
the time has come for the youth to reach out...to make a difference
The Mars Petition
The time has come for humanity to journey to Mars.
Humanity yearns for a challenge, one that will let us exercise the limitless potential, now dormant, that lies waiting within ourselves. The prospects facing our generation have never been greater; with world peace, unprecedented economic growth, and extraordinary technological innovation, we find ourselves at the threshold of a new millennium of opportunity. The human exploration of Mars will be our generation's crowning achievement."
I will admit that the world will always have problems, that there will never be complete world peace, and that our economy is taking a hit, but WHAT BETTER REASON IS THERE TO GO TO MARS?
If we choose a different path to mars than simply the path that will bring us there and let a small crew stay for a short while, if we choose the most ambitious path, the path that will lead to permanent colonization, then, we may find a revival.
In doing this, we may indeed boost our economy so, that the current trends of today may be reversed.
As for world peace, organizations are working every day to try to bring that about, and eventually, there will at least be some semblance of world peace. The time to journey to Mars is not when it is all at peace, when the situation is ideal. Thirty four years ago, when mankind landed a person on the moon, it was definitely not a time of world peace....and yet the spinoffs of Apollo and those other mssions serve us still
Remember the words "We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard"
as long as there is life there is hope, and as long as there are people lobbying against the military application of everything, there is still hope for a better world
lets begin to tap the resources of space BEFORE we run out of resources on the earth ???
This is a new way to get around mars, without having to worry about many moving parts or such...given that a mars plane would be unwieldy...this might be a better alternative

There is a new form of solar power being worked on using nature, specifically photosynthesis as a model. It has an efficiency of about 76-86% right now and is being worked on as we speak. Perhaps they will achieve the effiency of their photosynthesis itself: 95%
