I'd try to store resources up to a point where I was certain that the population could support another birth.

However, I don't think I'd let my child grow up on a drifting boat...

I still like the rock/necktie castration idea, though!  big_smile

#377 Re: Not So Free Chat » Magazine » 2002-12-08 23:49:11

OH!  That's a horse of a different color.

I really only read Astronomy and Discover, so I don't know how to help you.  Check out Space.com, and you'll get some good stories and updates.  I have a Space.com newsbar on my MyYahoo! homepage.

That really kills this board... big_smile

#378 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-08 22:41:15

And making an exception (I.E., not taking issue with China over Tibet, because Tibet isn't important - not many natural resources, after all, and therefore not much money) with Iraq because of its oil is just immoral. Its wrong. People are FAR more important than money.

Wow.  Been to a college rally lately?  The reason we won't intervene in Tibet is because the US isn't "people liberators".  Yes, we will liberate the folks in Iraq if we go to war, but right now we just want to neutralize Iraq's threat to the US.  Plus, we don't want to upset a world power (not a superpower, mind you, only the US bears that title nowadays), China, over their internal affairs.

As for the oil, if we really wanted it, we'd accuse Kuwait or Saudi Arabia of terrorism and invade them.

#379 Re: Not So Free Chat » The World Trade Center - Should the twin towers be rebuilt? » 2002-12-08 22:34:25

I don't know... it just seems that if we do anything in rebuilding the towers smaller than before, we've lost the fight.  Not to be stubborn or too proud, I'm just saying that I think a sacrifice in efficiency would in my mind be worth the symbolism we would re-establish in rebuilding the towers.

Anybody know about Nanotubes and how energy dissipates when wind hits them?  There were some posts about building structures out of nanotubes, and I was wondering about how the material would take building sway (if it swayed at all)

#380 Re: Not So Free Chat » Things about Bin Ladden - :P » 2002-12-08 22:29:02

Where in God's name do you people get these news stories?  I never hear about any of these things... or Bush quotes... I guess I'm pretty confined to The Daily Show. big_smile

#382 Re: Not So Free Chat » Science Fair Ideas - Impart your Wisdom... » 2002-12-08 22:25:03

Thanks for the tip.  That would be a fun project, especially if I could get a practical generator going.  I remember in 7th grade, I went to the Colorado State Science Fair, and the kid that won built a Sabotier (?) thing, just like Bob Zubrin.  As a matter of fact, I think he knocked off the whole idea from Zubrin.  It's been buggin me ever since.  Excuse me, I digress.

I'll look into the hydrogen fuel cell.  Anybody have some fluid mechanics or atmospheric ideas?  I'd like to get a broad base of ideas. smile

THANKS ALTTOWAR! smile

#383 Re: Not So Free Chat » Science Fair Ideas - Impart your Wisdom... » 2002-12-07 23:21:01

It's Science Fair time again...

I was wondering if any of you have some ideas about science fair projects.  Just to give you a rough run-down of my situation:

1.)  I live in the Rockies, with a summer high of around 75 F, and a winter low of about 10 F

2.)  I live inside of a forest fire burn area

3.)  I live around several nice-sized bodies of water

4.)  I recieve about 6' of snow yearly, with most sticking around until late March or early April

5.)  I can come up with a reasonable budget, so don't restrain yourselves (too much  big_smile).

I would like to hear about ANY project ideas you have, whether it pertains to Mars, or something else.  I hope this information gives you a better base about what I can experiment with.  Thanks!

#384 Re: Youth Group / Educational Outreach » Just to start a topic :) - stuff » 2002-12-07 23:13:16

I answered my own question!  I got promoted!!!

Have a great weekend (y'all)

#385 Re: Not So Free Chat » Magazine » 2002-12-07 22:56:03

Would you want to have a permanent staff of writers, or independent cores of technical and creative writers working independently?  You could really get some gifted technical or space writers to do some great stories for free.

#386 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » "Star Wars" missile defense - practicle? » 2002-12-07 00:28:26

I would like to have my consciousness downloaded into a computer...

As for the unmanned probe, wouldn't it take 4.3 years for the signal to get back to us?  What if something went wrong with the probe along the way?  Engineers would have to work with a 4.3 year offset of commands!

And those solar sails?  I hear you'd have to make them less than 3 microns thick (?)

#387 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-07 00:18:53

Does that mean that the Ietolla is worse than Saddam?  Speaking of which, if we're done with Iraq, we should try our hand at Iran, which has to my knowledge stayed out of the conversation...

I don't want to comment, for fear of having a brick thrown through my living room window. ???

#388 Re: Not So Free Chat » I thnx that we should talk about PLUTO - Pluto discussion » 2002-12-07 00:14:09

I completely agree about having simple standards.  I don't really care whether or not Pluto is a planet or not, but I hope that the decision about its status is determined by solid scientific evidence found by a Pluto fly-by, or other mission.

The New Horizons (?) mission to Pluto and the Kupier Belt should set the record straight once and for all.  However, its not even supposed to launch until 2006, and won't flyby until 2015 or 2016.  I'll be 27 or 28 by then, and I really don't want to argue about Pluto's status until then.  I just think that we shouldn't change it yet because it would confuse people unnecessarily, just so that scientists can make some petty rearrangement of the solar system.

Cool posts so far... we need more controversy.   Maybe if we found out that Pluto was really just a speck in Clyde Tombaugh's telescope... big_smile   That'd make for some REALLY tiny Eskimos! big_smile

#389 Re: Not So Free Chat » Thought Experiment II - Moral dilema » 2002-12-06 23:35:45

This is one tough cookie.  I couldn't stand living in close quarters with a psycho-suicidal person.  I'd fear for my own life, but at the same time I couldn't kill another human being for no apparent reason.  I think it's easier to answer this question in a room with windows and stimuli, than if you were actually going insane in a cell.

I think there are some other questions that are more interesting.  If the person was the same sex as you, would you become homosexual after a while?  If the person was the opposite sex, would you resort to rape?  Would you try to steal food from your prison-mate?  Would you begin to fight with them over simple things, like becoming extremely territorial?

I had a similar question I though about for a long time:

You are stuck in an endless void, stretching out into blank whiteness for as far as you can see.  There are no landmarks in the void whatsoever.  Completely barren.  The ambient light that illuminates this void comes from somewhere that you can't exactly tell; the light just is.  You are never hungry, for some reason, and because this void is empty, you think that escape is impossible.

Personally, I think ANYONE would go crazy.  Imagine having no landmarks to judge movement by.  You could in theory just be trapped in an 8-foot cube and be running in place.  Even staring off into the distance would be horrible.  Nothing to occupy your thoughts...

#390 Re: Not So Free Chat » Magazine » 2002-12-06 23:09:44

I really liked Discover at first, but I hated that it had to share astronomy and physics space with medicine, biotech, nature, and others.  That's why I got sucked into Astronomy.

I think if you did a magazine in e-mail form, or made a web page, you wouldn't have a problem with "crashing and burning" like Space.  All you need to do one of those is a decent computer and a modem.

#391 Re: Not So Free Chat » Magazine » 2002-12-06 22:16:06

That's a cool idea.  Are you thinking of something like, "NASA Today", or more of a theoretical and drawing board mission type of magazine?  I don't think Astronomy does a good enough job of covering NASA missions, because they focus more on backyard observing than actual space ideas.

If you made it more like a newsletter, or maybe something a little bigger, you could send it out as an e-mail or put up a web page with that month's copy.  Let me know how this develops.  I'm interested... wink

#392 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » "Star Wars" missile defense - practicle? » 2002-12-06 22:11:25

Breeder reactor?  I thought only France and Germany still believed in those.  We learned about how they work in physics, and I admit that if we want to get a breeder reactor to work in the US, we have some big obstacles to overcome.

And as for leaving the solar system, where would you go?  I like our little planet, orbiting around our nice, warm star.  Alpha Centauri?  Mmm... reading by the light of a twin star.  Romantic, but being ripped into space as your planet tears apart due to the pull of two stars... not so romantic.

Leaving the GALAXY?  Maybe you can catch Chewy and Han Solo at Tatooine before they make the jump to light speed.

Just joking, man.  We will need to leave the solar system at some point later, but right now we need to worry about a Russian or Chinese nuclear missile interceptor to insure that we're still here when we need to leave (wow!  That was yet another convenient chain!)

#393 Re: Not So Free Chat » The World Trade Center - Should the twin towers be rebuilt? » 2002-12-06 22:00:46

My initial 9/11 reaction was that we should build the towers bigger, better, and more beautiful than before.  I favored two black glass towers, at 125 stories.  I stopped liking this idea because black buildings, in New York, in the summer, will be extremly hard to keep air conditioned.

I like the replica idea because it is rubbing the terrorists nose in their own mess.  It's like saying,"yes, you destroyed the first one, but you couldn't keep it down."

As for the "torque" (?) idea, I like that too.  It would be nice to see some non-utilitarian architecture on the Manhattan Skyline.

#394 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-06 21:51:41

Look, maybe I didn't clarify some things before I left.  Let me get some things straight.

I'm not a chauvanist, and I wasn't saying you don't have freedom of speech in here.  I was referring to the "dictator" quote from Bush when I said to stop making personal attacks.  By all means, you have the right to say anything you want on this page, even that he's a mother #@%^er.  I was just trying to say that we should look at his presidency and his actions, instead of his off-the-cuff quotes (even I will admit that he is not a good improv speaker when he's trying to be funny... wink )

When I said "gentlemenly", I knew Cindy was a woman, but I assumed (obviously incorrectly) that gentlemenly was a universal term.  For the record, I think clark was the gentle"person" in this debate.  Cindy, AltToWar, and Shawn, I apologize if I offended you.  And I didn't by

As for being "boy wonder", thank you, but I believe you were mislead.  I'm not trying to out-do or put anyone's beliefs and opinions down on this board.  I was just trying to have a friendly debate with some fellow members about politics.

The troll thing makes sense to me now.  I should have known better.  I use that tactic all the time in debate class to get the opposing point to come down to my level.  HOWEVER, your troll has caused the opposite effect.  If you look at the past messages here, I was the only person defending Bush.  Now that you've hate-mailed and harrassed me into leaving, you have no one to argue with, and the board agrees with itself.  This thing will go stagnant in a while, which was the opposite of what you were trying to do.    I was providing enough controversy to begin with.  Oh, well.

I apolgize for any misunderstandings about my last post.  I really let my argument slip when I fed the trolls.  Sorry everybody sad

And I graciously thank all of those who commented on my argument and my political know-how (at least for my age, if not my point).  I really appreciate it.  smile

#395 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-05 16:18:57

No, we shouldn't invade Cuba because they don't support terrorists and they don't have a nuclear bomb.

And I do know how WWI started, and that won't happen because everyone will know who assassinated Iraqi leaders, they'll just turn a blind eye.

And as for the trash talk?  It was you, PaganToris, who came in here telling me to keep my mouth shut for no good reason.  You started it, and I'll finish it.  I just wanted to talk politics with people I respect and I got slapped in the face by some kid I've never even met before and never want to talk to again.  And AltToWar, you just think he's funny because I'm a conseervative.  Nice call. ???

I won't be coming back to this message board for a while, so I'll leave you with my closing remarks:

1.)  We are sending UN inspectors to Baghdad to prove or disprove our reasonable theories that Iraq has nuclear weapons.

2.)  If we find weapons, we'll invade; if we don't, we'll move on to North Korea.  Iraq is different from North Korea because of the proximity to China, and their threat to South Korea, Japan, and troops in the DMZ.

3.)  The call to the UN by the President was a symbollic deed.  The US doesn't need the international community to fight this dicator, but it makes us feel like we've consulted someone on the matter.

4.)  I favor the use of assassinations, because they save our troops lives, they minimize Iraqi civilian loses, and they remove only the leaders that we and the Iraqi people hate.

5.)  The nuclear weapon was one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century.  How many times did the possession of 1weapon keep so many wars from starting?  How many times did it prevent the US and Russia from going into a war?

6.)  The movement of troops into the middle east was done to keep Saddam from interfering with inspectors and making our presence known in the region.

7.)  We must disarm Saddam to protect the Israelis from a SCUD nuclear missile, and to protect many western countries from having a nuclear weapons used by terrorists inside of their borders.  If Americans don't stop this threat, who will?

8.)  The US isn't in this for oil.  If any energy benefits come of this, they are just that: a side benefit.  We are in this to protect our borders and our interests overseas.

I have been harrassed, threatened, and degraded for holding these beliefs.  I was just a 14 year old kid trying to defend my point of view in front of the world, and I think I did a pretty good job.  However, I've grown tired of PaganToris' hate mail, and ecrasez_l_infame's assaults on Mr. Bush's personal life.  Thank you, Clark, for being, in my mind, the only gentleman in this debate. smile

You may have gotten rid of me for now, but I will return...

#396 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-04 15:14:48

By no means am I entertaining the thought of assassinating a political leader in this country.  I was just trying to graphically illustrate how the same tactic would look in our own country.

And while leaders are the chosen representatives of a people, and generally not a good idea to pick off, a dictator is not.  And with 10% of the population supporting Saddam, I think it would be a safe bet that his assassination would not send out ripples in the political pool.  Plus, his cabinet members are safe bets because Saddam appointed them.

And big deal if Rumsfeld set up his own commitee.  Facts are facts, and a civilian will not be able to defy the CIA, the President, the UN, and the international community.

Hey, can you block someone out of a message board?  I hate PaganToris harassing people and not adding anything to the conversation (intelligent, at least...).

#397 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-03 23:48:46

What kind of dork would challenge a COMPLETE STRANGER to come and try to anal rape them?  Not only that, but would give this COMPLETE STRANGER their High School AND location.

If I'm correct, this is a page for the discussion of the Bush Administration and the war on terror, not a forum for your school yard trash talk.

Save your kiddie crap and taunting for the youth chat room, and let the rest of us have an intelligent conversation.

#398 Re: Not So Free Chat » President Bush - about bush » 2002-12-03 22:39:46

Okay, you pompous windbag.  I bench 150, squat 260, and I play football/ cross country in the fall, wrestling in the winter (that's where I was all day), and track in the spring.  AND I'M A FRESHMAN!  So how about you stop the trash talking before I cram your sorry Junior butt into a locker and let my deprived jock friends take turns pleasuring themselves with your hindquarters.

#399 Re: Not So Free Chat » Thought experiment - Moral dilema » 2002-12-03 22:35:09

So, you would let people willy-nilly "hop to it" just because you think it would be bad to deprive people of children?  I personally would find a method of castration involving only a sharp rock and a necktie from one of the male's washed up suitcases.  Speaking of which, have any of you guys ever had Rocky Mountain Oysters?  YUM! big_smile

On the "Alternative Sex" point, you can only do it in the butt for so long.  I mean, its fun at first, but after a while it becomes like the moonshine to a fine bottle of champaigne.  And on these "other methods of hot sex", I really don't want to have a mental picture of what scientists do with their partners after dark.  Sorry. big_smile

PHOBOS!!!

CONGRATULATIONS ON BREAKING THE 1000 POST BARRIER!

If I'm correct, you're the first person to do it, right?
