Re: Spammer

This coming from the person with an endless opinion about management.  lol

Quit complaining about how they want to run the place for christs sake. They have obviously made a decision.

Re: Spammer

I don't see how discussing bots (that cannot read) and talking kills is encouraging it...

*I'm not convinced most of these spammers ARE spambots.  If they are 'bots, it's an interesting coincidence that the porno spamming has (it seems) increased substantially in the past week...

...the discussion so far is about how bad it really is, and wether the action taken now is enough etc... Does the spam bother you? (it bothers me) how much?

I'd like New Mars to remain spam-free.  Mainly because allowing it only encourages more...and more...and more.  If I want "advertisements" I can watch TV.  tongue

Do you think it is taken care of succesfully enough?

Yes.

"Most people (I hope) are coming to New Mars to discuss space exploration, the MERs and other missions, science, astronomy...not to take endless opinion polls about management."

Sure, but board related stuff is part of the whole picture,.. requests, ideas, objections,... And I don't see any polls about the subject, would be pointless, because, anyways, Americans don't vote

Seriously: you can not tell people not to discuss this.

Not "telling" anyone; merely making the suggestion that sometimes making an issue public will only serve to draw more flies to the window...

There's a time to discuss, then there's a time to act.

Should've used 'ask', that's my stilted English, wasn't meant offensive (I realise it could come over that way re-reading it)

BTW: during this discussion, no new spam was posted.

Conclusion: Either you, Clark or I are the culprit!  lol

Re: Spammer

This discussion warrents a response.

I really really really hate the idea of "secret admining/moderating." I have seen so many comunities lacking in spirit because the mods have their own place to chat about things, and are essentially an elitist bunch of aresholes. It gets to your head. You become closer to those within your circle and you begin to forget about what's important.

I've tried to be public about everything. The forum software updates, wiki, tex integration, everything I do. Perhaps you could say I do it just to say I've done something, but part of me feels you all should know what's going on. Sure, there are personal issues that we do keep private, but the vast majority of user interaction with moderators should be public.

You can ask me a question about the site and you will get an answer. You can't say that about a lot of admins.

Re: Spammer

bunch of control freaks.

read what you want. ignore what you want. shut the hell up.

lets obsess about one area of the message board. brilliant.

"Oh god, the humanity! SPAM!"

"Don't talk about what to do about Spam, do something about spam! The time for action is NOW!"

The mods are doing a fine job. But Josh still isn't cool, even if he does get all the babes.  tongue

Re: Spammer

A word of advice for the curious.

Most of the links 'Guest' serves up for perusal will try and install the trojan Loadadv. This is a 'generic' Trojan that prepares your computer for other malware. Non-patched systems run a severe risk of contamination.

http://research.sunbelt-software.com/th … ch=loadadv

Threat risk: Severe Risk
Severe threats typically are remotely exploitable vulnerabilities, which can lead to system compromise. Successful exploitation does not normally require any interaction and exploits are in the wild. There exists a high possibility of potential system damage or security flaw. Attacker has complete control over your computer or install new software on your machine

Re: Spammer

It's gotten worse, I've been deleting 10+ a day, easy. I'll look in to making Guest posters have to input a little image verify thing. I might lock the forums to Guest posters in the meantime, it is getting a bit crazy.

Over a whole day that's about my 'score' too, but usually i log on several times a day, only yesterday I didn't have time during 'office hours' (school)

The image thingy would be good, not 100% waterproof, but I guess good enough for New Mars.
It seems to work quite well for blogs etc.

The thing that irritates me is that the spam make look NMars bad. In several ways: it looks unprofessional, and I think certain people will be put off, when they visit here for the first time etc.
(and will somebodyplease  think of the children!  wink )

Re: Spammer

Done.

Thanks for the headsup, and for the attached warning to that post, Spacenut.

Those bastards, this one clearly wasn't a bot... That was an ugly, targeted attempt to lure people intersted in space to click those links.

(EDIT:) not three whole minutes after I deleted it, it was posted again, what a f**ktard!

I put up a 'Warning' announcement in Meta New Mars re: those Guestposters

Re: Spammer

Guest posting has been disabled for the time being (maybe indefinitely, we'll see how it goes). Posting spyware/evil stuff like that is a big no-no. Might take off that announcement Rxke, thanks for warning everyone in the meantime, though.

Thanks for the heads up SpaceNut, you rock. Sorry I didn't tend to this sooner.

If any registered users post spam (which might start happening since their source of spamage has been cut off now), let me know their username so I can ban them (once you delete the thread I won't know what their username is, so it'll be important).

Re: Spammer

Not right now no, I'm really busy, I'm sure it exists, or I could code it myself. We already have image verify for registering. Are we even sure that would work, though? I honestly don't know, sometimes it seems like this stuff is done manually.

Re: Spammer

Yeah, at least the last one was. But it would raise another barrier to bots. It's always a tradeoff. How many loops one has to jump through as a well-meaning poster, just because of those spammers, grrr.

Re: Spammer

Here is another prospective U.S. stages massive mock Internet attack
'Cyber Storm' tests how government would respond to online assault

At first I thought that may have been what we had just seen but under reading the article I see now that it was only a simulation..

The government concluded its "Cyber Storm" wargame Friday, its biggest-ever exercise to test how it would respond to devastating attacks over the Internet from anti-globalization activists, underground hackers and bloggers.

Even Bloggers, well I guess we need to inform Clark to be careful... lol

There was no impact on the real Internet during the weeklong exercise. Government officials from the United States, Canada, Australia and England and executives from Microsoft, Cisco, Verisign and others said they were careful to simulate attacks only using isolated computers, working from basement offices at the Secret Services headquarters in downtown Washington

Though only an exercise the real thing could really be bad for all...

Nice link Rxke, thanks!

BTW, did cigarettsmania spam? I'll get rid of 'em, but I'm just wondering if they were explicitly spamming.

PS I quit smoking, but I still do it ocassionally, the key is to just walk away my friend, walk away. smile
