I don't see how discussing bots (that cannot read) and talking kills is encouraging it...

*I'm not convinced most of these spammers ARE spambots. If they are 'bots, it's an interesting coincidence that the porno spamming has (it seems) increased substantially in the past week...

I'd like New Mars to remain spam-free. Mainly because allowing it only encourages more...and more...and more. If I want "advertisements" I can watch TV.

Sure, but board related stuff is part of the whole picture,.. requests, ideas, objections,... And I don't see any polls about the subject, would be pointless, because, anyways, Americans don't vote

This discussion warrents a response.

I really really really hate the idea of "secret admining/moderating." I have seen so many comunities lacking in spirit because the mods have their own place to chat about things, and are essentially an elitist bunch of aresholes. It gets to your head. You become closer to those within your circle and you begin to forget about what's important.

I've tried to be public about everything. The forum software updates, wiki, tex integration, everything I do. Perhaps you could say I do it just to say I've done something, but part of me feels you all should know what's going on. Sure, there are personal issues that we do keep private, but the vast majority of user interaction with moderators should be public.

You can ask me a question about the site and you will get an answer. You can't say that about a lot of admins.

A word of advice for the curious.

Most of the links 'Guest' serves up for perusal will try and install the trojan Loadadv. This is a 'generic' Trojan that prepares your computer for other malware. Non-patched systems run a severe risk of contamination.

It's gotten worse, I've been deleting 10+ a day, easy. I'll look in to making Guest posters have to input a little image verify thing. I might lock the forums to Guest posters in the meantime, it is getting a bit crazy.

Over a whole day that's about my 'score' too, but usually i log on several times a day, only yesterday I didn't have time during 'office hours' (school)

The image thingy would be good, not 100% waterproof, but I guess good enough for New Mars.
It seems to work quite well for blogs etc.

The thing that irritates me is that the spam make look NMars bad. In several ways: it looks unprofessional, and I think certain people will be put off, when they visit here for the first time etc.
(and will somebodyplease think of the children! )

Those bastards, this one clearly wasn't a bot... That was an ugly, targeted attempt to lure people intersted in space to click those links.

Guest posting has been disabled for the time being (maybe indefinitely, we'll see how it goes). Posting spyware/evil stuff like that is a big no-no. Might take off that announcement Rxke, thanks for warning everyone in the meantime, though.

If any registered users post spam (which might start happening since their source of spamage has been cut off now), let me know their username so I can ban them (once you delete the thread I won't know what their username is, so it'll be important).

Not right now no, I'm really busy, I'm sure it exists, or I could code it myself. We already have image verify for registering. Are we even sure that would work, though? I honestly don't know, sometimes it seems like this stuff is done manually.

Yeah, at least the last one was. But it would raise another barrier to bots. It's always a tradeoff. How many loops one has to jump through as a well-meaning poster, just because of those spammers, grrr.
