Griffin Right Hand Man to Speak at Mars Society Convention
August 1, 2005

Chris Shank, Special Assistant to NASA Administrator Mike Griffin
will speak at the 8th International Mars Society Convention, August
11-14, 2005 at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Prior to his work as Administrator Griffin's Special Assistant, Chris
Shank served as a staff member of the House Space subcommittee and as
a Lt. Colonel in the US Air Force. Since joining NASA, he has had a
key role in coordinating the development of NASA plans to implement
President Bush's Vision for Space Exploration, which aims to send
human explorers back to the Moon and on to Mars, as well as dealing
with many other issues the space agency is currently facing.

Chris Shank's talk is entitled "NASA's New Plan." It will be given in
a plenary session on the morning of August 13.

For the past two months, Griffin's team has been working out the plan
to reach for the Moon and Mars. The results of their efforts have
been closely held. Shank's talk may be their first public revelation.

Registration for the conference is now open at http://www.marssociety.org]www.marssociety.org.

Was an Email from Robert Zubrin

Pretty exciting stuff. smile I wish I could go. smile

Re: Will The Mars Society here NASA’s new Plan First?

NASA is wondering about it's future, the HST repair made some unhappy
the Hubble trouble left many into the space-telescope fanclub and Space-robotic community unsure about how this manned vision to Mars would affect their favourite areas of science.
Hubble may be understandable and explained by what will be got in return

But more recently we saw they canceled the Mars telecom orbiter mission, MTO getting axed is sad news.

People are asking do they have the budget for manned Mars projects, NASA needs some news direction or a good re-view of this vision.

Maybe if the US has less dollars for robotic missions other countries or private organizations can step up and fill the void of any loss of science due to robotics. I here Europe’s Mars Express was quite successful. Maybe we will see more robotic missions from other countries to follow. I hear India and Japan have some planed. The planetary society launched a solar sail. Did the mars society launch there own mission yet (mars genesis?). Maybe someday Canada will launch it’s own mars mission [fingers crossed].

Will the convention be aired on the Internet?

For those that missed the last one here comes the next:
Readying For The Ninth International Mars Society Convention

The agenda will also include a wide assortment of panels and debates concerning key issues bearing on Mars exploration and settlement, a banquet with lots of fun entertainment, and plenary addresses from many prominent leaders of the effort to get humans to Mars.

2006 in Washington DC

Everyone who reads this message board should attempt to go. As with the 2004 Chicago convention, any NewMars member who greets me in person and asks will be treated to ONE beverage of their choice (draft beer or equivalent).

The cost? Ya' gotta listen to me blather for 5 or 10 minutes.  wink

Edit: Limited to the first 25 NewMarsians who ask.

This offer good at the convention, only.

Re: Will The Mars Society here NASA’s new Plan First?

I'm planning to go if at all possible. It would be my second mars society convention. My first one was the toronto one. That was probably the last time I paid my membership dues.
