Re: Mars Occults TYC 6174-00681-1

*Various astronomy web sites are giving notice of Mars occulting a faint star (TYC 6174-00681-1 with a magnitude of 10.2, which is too dim to see with the unaided eye; must have strong binoculars at least) on December 11.

None of these articles mentions where this dim, "backwater" star is located in the sky.  :-\  No reference to in which constellation nor near to.  The articles also don't give a time the occultation will occur.  This is unusual, in my experience.

I searched rather extensively with Google and also tried to track down a free online star chart service.

This is the most complete info I could find:

Dec 11 - Mars Occults TYC 6174-00681-1 (10.2 Magnitude Star)  - see IOTA on ASO "Links" page

(Thanks to the Arkansas Sky Observatory!)  But unfortunately there's no helpful information at any link in their web site; just a repeat of what's occulting what.  :-\

That's some crazy stuff, right there. I can't find the signifincance, either. I'll ask in an #astronomy channel.

*Thanks Josh.

I last knew Mars to be in Taurus, but since summer it's been out of our view.

Okay, here goes:

Due to various solar system orbits and tilts, Mars doesn't really improve much in visibility through December, so the best way of finding this morning red world is to use Venus and the crescent Moon – see Venus notes for details. On Friday 3 and Saturday 4 December, Mars is very close to the leading star of Libra, the Scales – this is Zubenelgenubi

Well...Libra is well below the horizon and thus entirely out of view even at first stirrings of twilight.  Unless the event occurs in the wee hours of the morning, when Libra is rising in the East; must be (especially for them to mention it at U.S. web sites).

But again, no *time* is mentioned at all, nor time zones and etc.

The best I could tell (using Starry Night software) Mars occults TYC 6174-00681-1 during daylight hours for the US observer.

The coordinates are related to the name of the star...

TYC stands for Tycho.

TYC stands for Tycho.

::EDIT::  Example:

The right ascension (R.A.) and declination (dec) of an object on the celestial sphere specify its position uniquely, just as the latitude and longitude of an object on the Earth's surface define a unique location. Thus, for example, the star Sirius has celestial coordinates 6 hr 45 min R.A. and -16 degrees 43 minutes declination...

Re: Mars Occults TYC 6174-00681-1

The Tycho star catalog uses the GSC numbering system:

The first four digits denote region, the next five numbers denote a specific area within the region. The final number is a Tycho specific component number.

I don't make this up.

*Yes, I know.  I didn't say you made this up.

Thanks anyway.

Re: Mars Occults TYC 6174-00681-1

TYC 6174-00681-1:
rises at 4:46 AM
transit at 9:56 AM
sets at 3:07 PM

(from New Mexico viewpoint)

Azimuth 189 degrees 6.031'
Altitude 36 degrees 51.147'

It is located in the constellation of Libra, and on Dec 11, it will be between Venus and Mars (closer to Mars)
