Re: Moon to Mars Mission - The posible Man and Unmaned Mission

Moon to Mars Mission! It about a one million dollar contract that NASA gave to Raytheon to study the possible prospect of such a mission.

Re: Moon to Mars Mission - The posible Man and Unmaned Mission

It sounds interesting. It will be difficult to justify going to the moon first to reach mars. The only advantages being any assembly advantage or resource utilization the moon or L1 may have. Common wisdom suggests this would be an infrastructure intensive approach and may not be an affordable way to get to mars. It all depends on what technology is available and how efficiently Lunar resources will be utilized. I am curious about what would be the target date for such a mission and what enabling technologies they expect to have in place.

Re: Moon to Mars Mission - The posible Man and Unmaned Mission

The article is not entirely clear, but I think that they are studying missions to the Moon and missions to Mars, rather than a mission that goes to the Moon on its way to Mars.

That would make more sence.

Re: Moon to Mars Mission - The posible Man and Unmaned Mission

I think you don't read this article correctly,

Its discussing their Constellation Project and extending this from Low Earth Orbit ( LEO) to the moon and eventually to mars and the issues surrounding this proposal.

They have 6 months to determine, issues and technologies for both moon environment and mars environment. Here we go, trying to work on issues for the moon and mars at the same time and they have some similarities and some differences. But the process for working on a long term strategy for humanity in space must include the moon for resource processing and Mars as the first permanent human settlement outside earth.

Raytheon Selected for NASA Project Constellation Engineering Study Team

"Raytheon Company has been selected by NASA to participate in a six-month study team to define various system requirements and design the architecture for the agency's Project Constellation Moon-to-Mars program. Raytheon, led by engineers at its Missile Systems business, received a nearly $1 million contract for the Concept Exploration and Refinement (CER) work, which could extend beyond the initial six-month award period."

Re: Moon to Mars Mission - The posible Man and Unmaned Mission

Here is how Nasa is paying for the seed money for the starting of the CEV project. Robbing peter to pay paul. But what will we get for it in return just more delay or at least 6 months with another possible.

Article also contains who got what awards and there amounts.

Re: Moon to Mars Mission - The posible Man and Unmaned Mission

The first area is preliminary concepts for human lunar exploration. The second category consists of preliminary concepts for the crew exploration vehicle and human lunar exploration.

So Nasa has judge some proposals as only lunar capable ands some compamies capable of both.

Re: Moon to Mars Mission - The posible Man and Unmaned Mission

we have taken some first steps with the moon, but we have a long way to go as remote unmanned flight that fails to land is a problem.
