I only found the New Mars website a little over a week ago while I was trying to find out where all the Mars enthusiasts were hanging out. I'm really glad to have found it.

I'm sure everybody here knows you can watch NASA TV on the web but I'm not sure if everybody knows about the daily news briefings where they tell the latest info on Spirit and Opportunity. They usually happen at 5:00PM GMT (12 noon EST, 9:00AM PST).  If you can't catch them live, then you can watch them on the C-SPAN web site. C-SPAN archives them for about two weeks. You can find them at [http://www.c-span.org/VideoArchives.asp?z1=&PopupMenu_Name=Science/Technology&CatCodePairs=Issue,ST;]http://www.c-span.org/VideoAr....sue,ST;. To view them you need the Real Player from real.com. C-SPAN usually puts up a the new link to the program each day but if they don't you can just enter the next link in the Real Player "location" field.

C-SPAN didn't post a link for the last briefing, I think because the recording has very bad audio. Anyway here's the link for the last one.

*Terrific!  I'm happily surprised that Spirit has recuperated to this point so quickly (based on news sources). 

The pic reminded me of:  "Now this won't hurt a bit" just before that high-pitched whine of a drill starts on your teeth!

Yes, it made my morning too...    I read the news article as well, and it was very encouraging as well.  Essentially what they are doing is performing "surgical" proceedures on the flash memory in an effort to find the actual bug.  Even though they still haven't found it yet, at least they're closing in on it, and they still have the option of wiping the whole memory clean if they have to.

As it stands now, it looks like Spirit will get back to work next week...possibly just a couple of days after Opportunity steps off the lander.

Better get ready for an avalanche of scientific data!

So the current status from Gusev Crater is that the Spirit was willing, but the flash was weak....

    Won't it be a scrap of something off the lander?

    Those speckles are probably magnification artifacts in the image, I would guess.

Hey 1smlstp!! That's awesome! Thanks for that link! I've been extremely busy as of late so I couldn't watch the press briefings live and I'd been catching the C-SPAN reruns of the press briefings. I attempted that little date trick before but it didn't work for me. I'm glad it does actually seem to work, though.

What you wanna bet that we're going to have a full res panorama today (Friday, Jan. 30th; it's really early morning here)? 

Hopefully they'll also have MGS passover shots.

I just can't wait until we get roving. Seeing these static images are so... boring! I want to see daily images of movement. That's what I want now. Yes, I know, I'm greedy, but it's the truth! Moving images across the terrain of Mars is as close as we're going to get to actually being there.

I think Opportunity's full res pan is not so interesting. The lander is in a crater (or a depression) with its rims only about 10m away - what will we see? Let's wait with pan images until the rover crawl out .

Seriously: I think that everything interesting in the crate was already shown in particular images (not pan). Other interesting datas from the crater will be available when the rover moves toward the rock outcrop.

Yes, didn't interpret it that way... Visually there will be not that much to see, that's right, and once outside the crater there's a *whole new* panorama... It will be like a third landing all over again, yihaa!

Still, i wouldn't mind to don a VR helmet and have a look around *inside* that crater (drools) that'd be awesome... Knowing there'a a whole new other world outside of it...
