"If things go well, Spirit could return to its science work early next week, Trosper said." Yahoo!
Hey, who predicted that? Are we having psychic people on this board??
(EDIT:) it was Josh! on Jan. 27 2004, 05:19, in this thread! (page 18):
QuotePersonally, I see Spirit back on the road within a week
Josh, time to play whatever gambling game is your favourite, I guess!

Hey everybody,
I only found the New Mars website a little over a week ago while I was trying to find out where all the Mars enthusiasts were hanging out. I'm really glad to have found it.
I'm sure everybody here knows you can watch NASA TV on the web but I'm not sure if everybody knows about the daily news briefings where they tell the latest info on Spirit and Opportunity. They usually happen at 5:00PM GMT (12 noon EST, 9:00AM PST). If you can't catch them live, then you can watch them on the C-SPAN web site. C-SPAN archives them for about two weeks. You can find them at [http://www.c-span.org/VideoArchives.asp?z1=&PopupMenu_Name=Science/Technology&CatCodePairs=Issue,ST;]http://www.c-span.org/VideoAr....sue,ST;. To view them you need the Real Player from real.com. C-SPAN usually puts up a the new link to the program each day but if they don't you can just enter the next link in the Real Player "location" field.
C-SPAN didn't post a link for the last briefing, I think because the recording has very bad audio. Anyway here's the link for the last one.
[rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/e012804_nasa.rm]rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/e012804_nasa.rm
Here are the Real Player links for the past couple of days.
[rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/e012704_nasa.rm]rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/e012704_nasa.rm
[rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/e012604_nasa.rm]rtsp://video.c-span.org/15days/e012604_nasa.rm
You can see they are using Month Day Year (i.e. 012804 = January 28, 2004) for the link name so it's easy to figure out what the link would be for any specific day just in case they don't post the link.

*Terrific! I'm happily surprised that Spirit has recuperated to this point so quickly (based on news sources).
The pic reminded me of: "Now this won't hurt a bit" just before that high-pitched whine of a drill starts on your teeth!
LOL.

Yes, it made my morning too... I read the news article as well, and it was very encouraging as well. Essentially what they are doing is performing "surgical" proceedures on the flash memory in an effort to find the actual bug. Even though they still haven't found it yet, at least they're closing in on it, and they still have the option of wiping the whole memory clean if they have to.
As it stands now, it looks like Spirit will get back to work next week...possibly just a couple of days after Opportunity steps off the lander.
Better get ready for an avalanche of scientific data!

[http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/op … 40128.html]Opportunity ready to rove this Sunday?
*If so, it will have been a heckuva shorter wait than what Spirit had...
"PASADENA, Calif. -- Operators of the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity have successfully deployed its wheels and completed the first half of a stand-up process -- all part of readying the rover to do what it was built to do best, rove.
If all continues on track, the robot may wheel itself onto the flat and dark terrain of its landing spot, inside a small crater at Meridiani Planum this coming Sunday. That drive is eagerly awaited by scientists gathered here at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
Within easy driving range is a perplexing rock outcropping. These layered rocks measure only 4 inches (10 centimeters) tall and are being hotly debated as being either volcanic ash deposits or sediments carried by water or wind."
*Hey! That drive isn't just "eagerly awaited" by JPL scientists...sheesh. Us too!

Hi Stephen, hi everyone! (Been lurking for weeks; thought I should jump in with a suitably "scientific" post.)
Well *obviously* that "leaf-like thing" is a small fish, freeze-drying on the sand... and those "speckled things"? I'm betting on water-rounded pebbles.
Hee!

Vjv, that was a thoroughly reprehensible first post!
You'll have to do better than that.

Where is that 'leaf-like' thing supposed to be, on the dirt at Spirit's feet?
Won't it be a scrap of something off the lander?
Those speckles are probably magnification artifacts in the image, I would guess.

Hey 1smlstp!! That's awesome! Thanks for that link! I've been extremely busy as of late so I couldn't watch the press briefings live and I'd been catching the C-SPAN reruns of the press briefings. I attempted that little date trick before but it didn't work for me. I'm glad it does actually seem to work, though.
BTW, my sig has a couple of useful links I think you'll enjoy.
Sorry I haven't been around lately guys, but I do keep a watchful eye for spammers still. :;):

What you wanna bet that we're going to have a full res panorama today (Friday, Jan. 30th; it's really early morning here)?
Hopefully they'll also have MGS passover shots.
I just can't wait until we get roving. Seeing these static images are so... boring! I want to see daily images of movement. That's what I want now. Yes, I know, I'm greedy, but it's the truth! Moving images across the terrain of Mars is as close as we're going to get to actually being there.

I think Opportunity's full res pan is not so interesting. The lander is in a crater (or a depression) with its rims only about 10m away - what will we see? Let's wait with pan images until the rover crawl out .
My knowledge of the English language is poor - but still I'm here .
Offline
Josh, knowing your creepy predicitions capabilities (see the Spirit 'revival' prediction), i am *not* going to bet!
360 hi-res today, folks!
Arccos, yer kidding? That crater is a real treasure-trove!
I wanna bet it'll take a while before Steve wants to get the rover out of it... It's a great place to be for exploration...
Offline
No, I'm not, that's just my opinion .
Seriously: I think that everything interesting in the crate was already shown in particular images (not pan). Other interesting datas from the crater will be available when the rover moves toward the rock outcrop.
My knowledge of the English language is poor - but still I'm here .
Offline
Yes, didn't interpret it that way... Visually there will be not that much to see, that's right, and once outside the crater there's a *whole new* panorama... It will be like a third landing all over again, yihaa!
Still, i wouldn't mind to don a VR helmet and have a look around *inside* that crater (drools) that'd be awesome... Knowing there'a a whole new other world outside of it...
