It appears that Python 3.9 must be installed to match the existing version of GMAT, even though Python 3.10 is installed by default in the current version of Ubuntu.

GW Johnson is continuing development of spacecraft mission plans using an Excel spreadsheet. He can come pretty close to what a more advanced tool would show, but it is limited in what can be done. The current challenge (as of November 2024) is to plan a hyperbolic trajectory for a mission returning from the Moon or Mars, and an elliptical orbit of a Space Tug that would be assigned the duty of meeting the incoming spacecraft and delivering it safely to LEO.
The challenge for the software we are seeking is to find the least-cost solution for this particular mission. This particular mission is going to become increasingly important as space travel to and from Earth increases in coming years. The idea of trying to use aerobraking in Earth's atmosphere is already bordering on risky, and it may well become impossible if Earth implements Space Traffic Control, as seems highly likely.
All it would take is for a Moon mission to plow into a Starlink satellite to set off the dreaded Kessler Syndrome.
GMAT is a free, open source, NASA sponsored software package to perform spacecraft flight analysis. It does have the disadvantage (from my perspective) of requiring a MATLAB license, which is free for students and affordable to corporations, but a stretch for my budget as a non-student. The last time I checked I think the fee was $100 per year.

I've already installed GMAT on another Ubuntu system, and confirmed that C++ and Python work, but I hit the wall with the need for MATLAB.
If we had more active members we might have one who is pursuing an Aerospace degree and is eligible to use the school license.

Maybe the way to approach this is to ask if anyone ** out there ** reading this forum has access to GMAT already, and is actually doing projects with it.
For that person:
The problem we'd like to address is the feasibility of designing a Space Tug to dock with Artemis II on it's way back from the Moon, and deliver it safely to LEO.
The Artemis II Orion capsule is equipped with a defective heat shield that will put the astronaut's lives at risk if it is used. It appears that NASA is committed to using that heat shield, regardless of the risk.
A Space Tug made using SpaceX hardware could (theoretically) dock with the capsule on it's way back from the Moon, and provide retro-propulsion sufficient to find a secure orbit in LEO. The heat shield is more than capable of handling an ordinary LEO descent.
The challenge (as I understand the problem) is to find a solution that brings the capsule on a hyperbolic trajectory close to a Space Tug in an elliptical orbit such that the relative dV between the two is manageable with the quantity of fuel that can be carried in the Space Tug, taking into account that the Space Tug has to accelerate itself from LEO to attain the desired orbit, match orbit with the capsule, and then decelerate itself and the capsule into LEO.
From what I've read, GMAT is powerful enough to handle this problem.

I don't expect anyone in the current membership to be interested in the details of how to set up a run.
However, if you start the video and advance the play cursor to 5:36 or so, you will be able to see animation of the program computing a Hohmann Transfer.
What may be of interest is the iteration... the program tries multiple times until it exceeds the orbit of the target object.
