Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

For kbd512....

If the problems we've encountered so far are the ** only ** problems in this situation, I would count us as lucky!

There is apparently a way to create a little php script that will exercise the password creation feature.

An alternative is to activate the login feature, and create a new user to become an Admin.

The password hash feature should create a new password hash for that user. If you can log in, then we are 99% of the way home.  You can upgrade that user to full Admin, and reset the password for the Mods. Each of us can then log in using the temporary password, and we should then be able to set our own password.  This would be a useful exercise.

We have so few active members right now that (I am hoping) no one will object to going through a password reset process in order to gain use of the new software.

Follow up.... since you will need to update the database directly to enable registrations, would you like me to research that, or do you already know what to do?

Update a bit later .... in study of phpBB3, I've taken a look at manager.php.

It appears to contain code that deals with passwords, but at this point I don't understand what's going on.

All I know for sure is that in phpBB3 (latest version) there is no salt field in the database. Apparently that was discarded some time ago.

Sorry about the meeting as I had fallen asleep.

Password hash is part of the user table backup

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

For SpaceNut .... after the long week you've just experienced, you're entitled to that little bit of extra rest!  Plus, I'm guessing you put in a full day at work trying to catch up on the week away.

As a reminder, GW Johnson is out of town so we won't be hearing from him for a day or so.

I ** just ** put up a new Python program and if your computer is still running after the recent repairs, I'm hoping you might be able to download the program and run it. I ** think ** you already had Python installed, but if not it should install on your Windows machine.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

The Waiting Room is open at 23:55

The video recommended by OldFart1939 is well worth watching.

The explosion at the Starship landing site is a nice conclusion to the entire sequence.

Update ...

We set a new record for participation this evening:
SpaceNut
kbd512
GW Johnson

We watched part of the Manley video of the Starship flight, and then looked at images of early designs for what later became the Space Shuttle.

Post meeting summary:

Thanks again to everyone who stopped by.  I thought this was another interesting meeting, with a wide range of discussion, ending with a deep dive into manganese enhanced steel. That steel was discovered/developed in 1882 (according to Wikipedia) and it remains a very useful alloy to this day.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

The weekly NewMars Google Meeting is on track to begin at midnight UTC as usual.

This week we have a number of possible topics:

1) FluxBB 1.5.12 is almost ready for live testing
2) SpaceNut has been renovating his house so we may get to see a progress report
3) GW Johnson has published a number of ideas recently, including possible repair of the tunnel from Zvezda to a docking port
4) kbd512 and Calliban have been discussing a number of ideas
5) Other topics as participants come up with them

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

Today's Google Meeting is on schedule....

Daylight savings is ending in the US on November 3rd.

I notice that the equivalent of Daylight Savings seems to have just ended in Great Britain.  The Greenwich time now matches UTC.

Until November 3rd, we'll still be opening the waiting room at midnight UTC.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

Systems check for today's Google Meeting ....

Things seem to be working.

It is UTC 22:28:51

Back at 23:55 or so

23:50 Setting up

midnight UTC /// open for visitors

kbd512 and SpaceNut are online.

This was another interesting meeting, and we can add the word productive to the list.

SpaceNut brought us up to date on the house renovation there in New Hampshire, and kbd512 made progress in the final adjustments to bring FluxBB 1.5.12 online.  We are ** so ** close to having this system working, but it's often true that the last 1% of any project is the hardest.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

Daylight Savings Time has expired in the US.

Midnight UTC will now occur at 8 PM Houston time and 9 PM New Hampshire time.

It will also be Midnight UK time in case we have a nightowl in Europe who would care to attend.

A key advantage for staying with Midnight UTC is that it is a better time for California, Oregon or Washington participants at 7 PM instead of 6 PM.

I have invited Mr. Burk (Executive Director of the Mars Society) to attend this week's meeting, in hopes we can put the finishing touches on the FluxBB 1.5.12 upgrade.  The time change would make it more convenient for Mr. Burk, if he decides to attend.

In order to accommodate the needs of the members, I will open a Google Meeting twice this evening.

I'll open the first session at 8 PM New Hampshire time, and the second at Midnight UTC ( 9 PM New Hampshire).

We have the option to use Zoom as well. It still works (as of the last test).

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

Equipment for tonight's Google meeting seems to be working.

As a reminder, due to the change from Daylight Savings Time in the US, the standard meeting time of 12 Midnight UTC is moving to an hour later.

I've decided to keep this schedule for a meeting after the new Houston Time meeting.

Because our Texas members have found the 7 PM meeting time convenient, I'll open Google Meeting at 2300 UTC.

This two meeting schedule may be more than I can handle going forward, but I'll try it this evening.

A two meeting schedule would allow for separation of socializing from productive work.

The social interactions provided by the Zoom/Google-Meeting venue have proven valuable to NewMars members over a couple of years now.

Occasionally we are able slip a few minutes of useful activity into the mix.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

The waiting room is open for the Houston Google Meeting at 2300 UTC.

The first discussion was about Skylon

the next discussion is about Roman concrete:
https://news.mit.edu/2023/roman-concret … casts-0106

Does Mars have Calcium?

Mars might use Sulfur for concrete.

Update after reading the MIT news article at the link above: There are several items reported in the article that may be of interest to NewMars members.

The article reports on the use of modern instruments to study ancient Roman concrete. The key finding is that what we now call "quicklime" was used in the mixture in such as way as to cause heating of the mixture during curing, which led to formation of compounds that would not be present otherwise. however, the greatest benefit discovered by the researchers is self-curing capability. If a crack forms, and water enters the crack, the Roman mix is able to create new structure to fill the crack so that water stops flowing.

Quicklime: (per Google)

Dictionary
Definitions from Oxford Languages · Learn more
quick·lime
/ˈkwikˌlīm/
noun
noun: quicklime

a white caustic alkaline substance consisting of calcium oxide, which is obtained by heating limestone and which combines with water with the production of much heat; lime.

Origin
late Middle English: from quick + lime1, after Latin calx viva or Anglo-Norman French chaux vive .
Use over time for: quicklime

As a follow up... there is plenty of Calcium on Mars...

Per Google:

Calcium is found in many places on Mars, including in the crust, in deposits, and in minerals:

    Calcium carbonate
Found in the soils around the Phoenix landing site, calcium carbonate is evidence that Mars once had a thicker carbon dioxide atmosphere and more water.

Calcium-rich deposits
NASA's Curiosity rover found calcium deposits on Mars that are similar to those on Earth, where water circulates in cracks and rock fractures.
Calcium sulfate
A special type of calcium sulfate, γ-CaSO4, has been found in Martian meteorites and in extremely arid Mars-like regions.
Calcium in the crust
Calcium is one of the most abundant elements in the Martian crust, along with iron, magnesium, aluminum, and potassium.
Pyroxene minerals
Both low-calcium (ortho-) and high-calcium (clino-) pyroxenes are present on Mars.
Calcium perchlorate
Studies suggest that magnesium and calcium perchlorate at the base of the subglacial lakes on Mars could lower the freezing point of water.

Evidence for calcium carbonate at the Mars Phoenix landing site
Calcium carbonate (approximately 3 to 5 weight percent) has been identified in the soils around the Phoenix landing site by scanni...

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

Today is Google Meeting day for NewMars forums.

Last week we adjusted to the end of Daylight Savings Time.

Houston time is 1 AM UTC, so it is definitely out of reach for our European members

Conversely, midnight UTC is 6 PM Houston time, which is inconvenient for most families.

I'll keep midnight UTC as an option if it works for anyone, but the scheduled meeting will open at 1 AM UTC, 7 PM Houston, 8 PM New Hampshire.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

The waiting room is open.

Update after meeting ...

We spent a few minutes reviewing kbd512's recent post about discoveries of improved materials for radiation protection.

Then kbd512 dove into the FluxBB upgrade problem, and he succeeded in activating the login feature

All members ** should ** be able to log in now at newmars.com/new

Please do so!  The database is a copy from a few weeks ago.

the only feature not yet working is the style sheets, and since that is a common problem (as reported by Google) there is a decent chance we'll be able to figure it out.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

For SpaceNut re #217

Thanks for testing the new software running in the new directory!  We are ** so ** close... all the indications from Google lookup about the problem are that we have a file permissions issue to solve. Everything else that we've tested seems to be working but we haven't tested any of the Admin functions.

If you have time and your smart phone allows you to do so, please test the Admin features. Remember, this is a ** copy ** of the data base so you can make changes in the test account without disturbing the production account.  Please just make sure your are ** in ** the test account !!!

Best wishes for continued progress on your home renovation project.  I am looking forward to seeing your progress the next time we get together.

Re: Google Meet Collaboration - Meetings Plus Followup Discussion

Today is Google Meeting day.

We'll use Houston meeting time of 7 PM (19:00)

That's 8 PM (20:00) New Hampshire time.

It'll be 1 AM in Europe, and I'm not expecting anyone from Europe to join.  It's a work day the next day.

The primary agenda item from my perspective is what I hope will be a successful negotiation of the last hurdle to bring the updated FluxBB package online.

Members (and guests) can see the current almost-working version at http://NewMars.com/new

***
The next Starship test is scheduled for Monday in the evening Eastern time.  That will be priority viewing for some NewMars members.

Elon Musk or Gwynne Shotwell was quoted recently as estimating 400 Starship launches in the not too distant future.

If that happens, it ** will ** be something to watch.  It might even get boring, at that launch rate.

Elon was quoted recently as predicting a launch of unscrewed Starships to Mars at the next Hohmann Transfer window in two years.

He doesn't seem to have a strategy for landing worked out yet. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with.

The Falcon 9 first stage, with it's drop-down fold-out landing legs is a model that might work, if the Mars terrain chosen for landing is stable.

For kbd512 re #221

Thanks for your report of progress!  the default permissions are working for persons not logged in.

When I logged in I got the usual display without style sheet.

My guess is that the www-data ownership is needed?

That's just a guess.  I have my personal css set to Fire so it should have appeared after I logged in.
