This item falls into the "inside baseball" category.
In working with the forum database I've learned how the word search mechanism works. There is a table of words entered into the posts table by members. That list is referenced by search_match table that is nearly 400,000 rows long. The search_match table rows are tiny ... they consist only of integers pointing to the word table and to the posts table, and the ID primary key.
That is how the program is able to so quickly perform searches of the entire collection of posts so rapidly.
You can see both tables using your spreadsheet software, if you are interested.

Here is a small Todo item for someone ...
GW Johnson recently published a study that predicts a 150 meter diameter hydrogen filled balloon should fly on Mars, and it turns out NASA has flown exactly such a balloon back in 2018, for research at high altitude.
The altitude reached by the balloon was 150,000 feet on Earth.
I'm hoping someone in the NewMars membership will be able to compare that altitude on Earth to the situation on Mars, where the atmosphere is so much less dense.
If NASA launched that same balloon on Mars, what altitude might it reach?
It should be noted that the balloon on Earth carried a heavy payload. On Mars that payload would be reduced significantly.
Gravity is .38% of Earth on Mars, so that would factor into the computation.
Arizona State University offers an estimate: Pressure at surface on Mars is about equal to 45 kilometers (28 miles) on Earth
150,000 feet was achieved by the NASA Big 60 balloon --- 5280 feet in a mile >> 28.4 miles.
There we have it! The Big 60 balloon would just barely fly at Mars with a payload. It should fly nicely with no payload, as GW predicted.

Thanks for finding and posting the links to Russian work on this concept!
I was happy to see Calliban's follow up!
One observation I would offer is that I am not interested in the heat production aspect of the decay mechanism.
I haven't read any of the links you provided, but I am guessing the Russians might have been focused upon traditional thermal outputs.
From my perspective, that might be worth pursuing, but the direct electric generation is what would make this a practical system.
The use of the term "highly enriched" in the post would put off ordinary people, because it implies radioactive materials like Uranium.
This material produces electrons, while transitioning from Nickel to Copper.
It does cause a neutron to convert to a proton, but that happens inside the nucleus, so the electron is ejected.
Thanks again for the research you did, and for providing an opportunity for Calliban to contribute a link!

For SpaceNut re Nickel-63 to Copper-63 studies ...
As reported elsewhere, I am transitioning from study of the 1 Megawatt scenario to a home sized 14 Kw scenario.
The target of the 14 Kw study will be for a longer period, such as 50 years.
I'll ask ChatGPT4 to compute the requirements for a system able to deliver 14 Kw after 50 years, and that means the opening power output will be well above that. The excess can be sold to the grid by the home owner.
I have an request for you to consider. I understand your time is limited, and this request may not fit into your available free time.
Request: Please document how you would use a power supply that delivers 14 Kw for 50 years. Because of the difficulty of pulling electrical power directly from the package, I am leaning toward generating thermal energy and using that directly where that is appropriate, and otherwise using it to create electrical energy despite the poor efficiency. Waste thermal energy can be directed into the thermal energy budget.
Applications for a home owner would include power to clean up contaminated water such as might come from a well, or such as might come from the home itself, as a result of human activity.
Because your study will match the requirements of a a home on Mars, please discard NOTHING.
On Earth, humans have gotten used to just tossing waste out into the Earth, for natural processes to handle.
On Mars, that will NOT be an option, so your study will be helpful for those planning a Mars community.
Please plan to allocate enough energy to reduce unneeded compounds to their elemental form, or to useful compounds such as water where possible.
My first question would be... is 14 Kw enough?
A relative installed a 14 Kw Generac, but the installer was able to supply only about half the energy requirements of the house. The requirements were based upon peak loads which might be imposed if everything is turned on. The compromise covers the essentials, such as furnace, air conditioning and some appliances.
The next generally recognized performance standard is 20 Kw.

For SpaceNut re thermal energy supply ....
A thermal energy supply would be able to provide a maximum of (about a third) of the output energy delivered as electric current.
The size supply I'm working on is 14 Kw, because that is a popular size for home backup devices made by Kohler and Generac.
As you've pointed out in recent posts in other topics, a user of such a system would be lucky to get 1/3, or about 4 Kw of usable electricity.
In one of your posts you mentioned 2 Kw as a usage you might have recorded at your home.
However, that might not include heating for air for the home, and water for various uses.
One application that might be possible, if you had 10 Kw of thermal energy constantly available, is a neighborhood hot springs business.
That idea might work better in a Northern latitude that has more winter and less summer.
Another option that practically anyone could use is to deliver the excess thermal energy into the water underground, where it would be available for retrieval via heat pump if necessary.
An example for application of such a capability might be melting ice on the driveway or sidewalks, which would otherwise be unaffordable for most folks.
Update later:
I asked Google about the efficiency of KRUSTY, which uses stirling engine technology to drive a generator ...
The thermal power of the test ranged from 1.5 to 5.0 kW(thermal), with a fuel temperature up to 880°C. Each 80-W(electric)–rated Stirling converter produced ~90 W(electric) at a component efficiency of ~35% and an overall system efficiency of ~25%.

About Featured Snippets
That figure of 25% is interesting, because it shows performance of a system not too different from the one we're talking about in the Nickel-63 topics.
If the target output is 14 Kw, then 25% of that is a bit over 3 Kw for electric supply, and that would appear to meet most of the household electrical supply needs.
The balance of 11+ Kw of thermal energy would be available for heating or for processing water to remove impurities or other similar applications.
Whatever thermal energy can't be used by the customer has to be fed to the air or to the water underground.

For SpaceNut re planning for Ni-63 industry ...
Please start thinking about how we might organize topics in the forum to support development of a global and eventually Solar system-wide industry based upon the reliable heating and energy storage capability of Ni-63.
It seems to me that our Economy topic might be the best fit for creating topics that would help to organize thinking about the several aspects of the new industry.
Topics might include:
A great deal more work is required to turn this discovery into an industry:
1) Manufacture of Ni-63
2) Assembly at a factory
3) Shipment while keeping cool (ie, redirecting thermal energy)
4) Installation while keeping cool
5) Operation while keeping cool
6) Removal from operation while keeping cool
7) Return to factory while keeping cool
8) Disassembly and reprocessing at factory (70% of the original charge will remain after 50 years)
9) Security, Government relations, Public relations, other topics

For SpaceNut .... as we enter 2024, I'm hoping kbd512 will have time to finish his modifications to the FluxBB code that runs our forum. When he is finished, the software should run on current level MySQL, PHP and Apache. When we have the package running on our home systems, we ** should ** be able find out where these Apache Internal Server errors are coming from.
As a possible clue, I learned in setting up the duplicate system here, that FluxBB puts every word we enter into a post into a very large indexed table. That is how it is able to perform searches by word, when we ask it where a particular word might be. Instead of searching the actual posts, it searches the table of words. That table has the ID of the post where the word appears. i'm guessing that some words in a new post may trigger a conflict with the words table.
If you have not yet started setting up your duplicate system, 2024 is a brand new year to accomplish that.
I expect you'll need hardware, such as a removable hard drive and mount, so your existing home system is not cluttered up with the development software.
