Re: California Wildfires

For Mars_B4_Moon re #173

I tried an experiment with Apache Internal Server error ... the post that failed was saved offline. I cleared history in the browser, logged back in and the exact same error occurred.  The total amount of text is modest ... just a few lines ... there are no URL's or other complex structures.

This little post is almost as long, and Preview is accepting it.

For Mars_B4_Moon re #173

I followed the link you provided and found, at the far end of the article, that the electric company was under intense political pressure to convert to renewable energy, so they neglected day-to-day operations, like replacing risky power delivery systems.

This was another experiment with Apache Server error ...

I put the post on a common storage device, opened it on a completely different computer with a completely different operating system, and a completely different browser.

That post was rejected by Apache. Only one sentence survived pruning. Now I'm adding additional comments, and expect them to pass.

They ** did ** pass Preview.

Update later: there were 716 characters in the original post. I don't see anything magic about that number.

Re: California Wildfires

For Mars_B4_Moon re #173 - The headline writer you quoted at the bottom of Post #173 was limited in space to summarize the article ...I followed the link you provided and found, at the far end of the article, that the electric company was under intense political pressure to convert to renewable energy, so they neglected day-to-day operations, like replacing risky power delivery systems.  They might not have done any better if they'd been left alone, but pressure to get off fossil fuel would have certainly influenced budget decisions. -  wouldn't be surprised if you find subsequent reports that political pressure is now redirected at safety, such as burying lines to avoid poles falling due to hurricane winds. -(th)

Above is the original post with line feeds and carriage returns removed.

I will now test preview:

Re: California Wildfires

power lines follow roads but when there are no roads we cut straight through the forests with tall poles. so doing under ground requires a much higher total to do the same with features to make it repairable should it require, Then again with growth requires and even higher level of preplanning that most will not do.

edit: the above is 319 characters. with this only adding possibly 80 more characters

Re: California Wildfires

It's one of the mystery of these forums why posts are rejected with error message, I did once find if I quoted any strange foreign characters with uni-code it could set off an error message.

On live social media feeds now I am seeing a lot of burning happening in North West Canada. Some of these vids will be trending and unverified so take everything you see or read in live social media feeds with a pinch of salt but the Wild Fire seems out of control.

Evacuees in Canada say the emergency situation has been made worse by the fact that news sources are being blocked on Facebook, due to an ongoing political fight between Facebook Meta and the Canadian government. The Columbia Shuswap Regional District and area Indigenous nations issued evacuation orders for the Scotch Creek, Lee Creek, Celista, Magna Bay and Little River areas.

The Scotch Creek and Takana Bay bridges were closed and Scotch Creek residents were told to evacuate by boat.

The wildfire service said the lightning-triggered Lower East Adams fire on the east side of the lake had grown to 100 square kilometres, while the Bush Creek fire to the west is now 33 square kilometres.

The service said areas under evacuation alert due to the Bush Creek fire "may receive an evacuation order today" due to severe weather.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District said Friday was an "unprecedented and profoundly challenging day" as it fought the most devastating fires in its history.

A fire in the Lytton area, meanwhile, forced the evacuations of numerous properties Friday, including the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway, while the Downton Creek fire in the Gun Lake area near Lillooet destroyed homes.

There are about 380 wildfires burning across the province, including 158 that are out of control and 16 wildfires of note that are highly visible or a threat to people or properties.

Re: California Wildfires

For Mars_B4_Moon re reporting on Maui fires ...

The news and investigations have a long way to go ... I caught part of an interview, or a report of an interview, indicating that the siren system in Maui was set up for Tsunami warnings and that officials were afraid people would head inland instead of toward the sea where they might have been better off.

The head of the security agency on the island has resigned.

The electric company is reported to have worried about people who need power for pace makers and other health equipment, when questioned about keeping power on when the risk of power sparks was high.

At least in Canada it appears authorities are trying to stay ahead of the problem.

Moving an entire city down a narrow roadway is quite an accomplishment.  I hope the town itself is spared.

Re: California Wildfires

They are saying 'Arson' now, reports that Spain's wildfires caused on purpose by some people or an individual person. President of the Canary Islands, denounced the culprits but can they track them down? The islands are normally Volcanic but Tenerife wildfires were reported as the most dangerous and most complex fires to hit Spain’s Canary Islands in decades.

Sometimes events happen by accident in the USA, Europe, Australia or South America where stupid people had lit a campfire but this seems to be on a whole other level of bad and criminal.

Wildfires caused by arson, police on Spanish tourist island believe
https://www.scmp.com/news/world/europe/ … nd-believe

Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo said on Sunday that the perpetrator or perpetrators had “put the lives of thousands of people and property at risk,” and he hoped they would soon be apprehended.

The Guardia Civil police unit is currently pursuing three lines of investigation into the suspected arson, which, by Sunday evening, is believed to have led to some 120 square kilometres of the island, popular with holidaymakers, being engulfed by flames.

By late Sunday afternoon, the wildfire had consumed some 11,600 hectares of land or the size of about 16,000 football fields, according to the Canary Islands’ emergency service. The figure is up from the 8,400 hectares affected earlier in the day.

The island’s regional chief Fernando Clavijo said the good news was that the entire southern front of the fire was “very stable,” though the northern area of the fire remains a concern.

Nonetheless, the Canary Islands’ leader dubbed the fire one of the worst in Tenerife in the last 40 years.

Firsthand accounts of survivors from the deadly wildfires

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z0beYjT6ko

1,100 are still missing I hope people are found but many days have now passed

This event might rank with the Deadliest Events in US and World History, Hurricane Katrina, the Russian Beslan school hostage crisis, Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie Scotland, the Jonestown mass murder cult, Siking of Major Battleships, Attack on Pearl Harbor, the 911 Terrorist Attacks.

that 1,000 + number is very high, maybe they jumped in the water and got sucked out to sea or maybe the fires got so hot people were cremated

Re: California Wildfires

For Mars_B4_Moon re 184

It appears that temperatures at Maui may indeed have cremated some residents .... I caught a report on an interview indicating that DNA may not be available, in some cases.

We (in the forum) have made half-hearted attempts to imagine what a successful fire shelter might look like.  My guess is that if something is ever invented for this purpose, the manufacturer is going to avoid liability by requiring purchasers to sign release forms.

A shelter would need to be able to keep occupants safe despite gas temperatures sufficient to incinerate any material containing carbon, for hours and not just minutes.

A shelter under a swimming pool might be a good place to start.

Re: California Wildfires

A single home survived unscathed, in a neighborhood in Maui that was otherwise incinerated.  Comments reported in the article about the house included observation that the area around the house was free of vegetation or anything else that could catch fire, and the roof had been converted from asphalt to metal. The house itself was a wooden home that was nearing 100 years of age.

Another factor was that the house is right on the beach, so fire would not approach from that direction.

Commentary indicated that many homes were lost, not because the fire reached them directly, but that hot embers were carried on the wind, and they lit fires wherever they landed.
