Re: IQ and Space Colonisation

So this has gone somewhat quiet, so I will interfere.

I would start here:
http://www.elise.com/quotes/heinlein_-_ … or_insects
Quote:

Heinlein – Specialization is for Insects
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.
-Robert A. Heinlein

That is an ideal of course, and I don't know about butchering hogs on Mars, still, a guideline.

So, the evolution of a society on Mars will be unpredictable, and I would be best to have adaptable people who can change tasks as is needed by circumstances of the moment.

Degrees for the ruling classes are designed so they would know how to run a society.  Degrees for lower classes are absent such teachings, and really allow the rulers to put incompetents on top and competent people below.  The incompetents below the ruling classes must become "Yes-Men or Yes-Women.  This is because they can easily be replaced, and they will know it.  The competent people below can be stimulated to do more work, as they would like to be recognized as worthy.

It works fairly well, but in a frontier situation, it would most likely be wrong.

So, instead of a degree, you would want to test people to be sponsored to go to Mars for a broad range of proficiencies in actual works.

People of this type would be sponsored, to the degree that the Mars society had a deficit of their kind.

As for the rich, I guess the adventurous might go.  Like people who want to clime Mt. Everest.  But most wealthy people might prefer a plushy life back on Earth, or wherever they could have a plushy life.

Intelligent people would most likely succeed in the proficiency testing.  However, it might be that someone of an average intelligence would do something that is needed quite well, and so they might be sponsored.

George Friedman has said that most of the wow stuff that you have on your I-Phone and Androids, was created for the military by people earning $50,000 per year who typically retire poor.  It is just that when the stuff becomes declassified, companies like Apple, Microsoft, ect. can appropriate these things and claim genius.

Done.

Re: IQ and Space Colonisation

That has never been the definition used in IQ testing.

The normal definition has been "the total number of people we did test or whom we might test"...it's never included the whole world population of people described as humans. Never.

You're now just reiterating your assertions, which isn't a very intelligent thing to do.

How do you explain the fact that people appeared to become incredibly MORE intelligent between 1950 and 2000?  Do you think they really became more intelligent. How do you explain the fact that people in once undeveloped countries are also becoming incredibly more "intelligent" as they get an education, radio, TV, smartphones etc?

Can you - dimly perhaps - spy some sort of correlation here?

Lots of things correlate well for intelligence on a planetary level. Owning a car will definitely make you more intelligent on a plantetary level - at least in the way IQ tests compute intelligence.

I expect attending church will correlate with intelligence - the more you attend the more intelligent you will be...on average.

You might even find that reading books correlates with intelligence, as opposed to chewing gum which is the other way.

Some IQ testing suggests women are more intelligent than men...and yet what's the ratio of Nobel Prizes awarded to men v women?  What exactly is IQ "measuring" - some sort of "pure" intelligence that has no meaning in the real world?

IQ is complete and total hoax science.

Did reefer drive the Highland Park parade ‘killer’ Robert Crimo to madness?
https://nypost.com/2022/07/06/did-reefe … o-madness/

You don’t need to be a psychiatrist to know that the Highland Park shooter is sick in the head. His evil act is unfathomable, but he does fit a familiar pattern of mass killers: alienated young male stoners who appear to be in the grip of a distinctively American madness. Those who knew the 21-year-old suspect, Robert Crimo III, say he habitually smoked cannabis, a habit he appeared to share with young mass shooters, including at Uvalde, Dayton, Parkland and Aurora. Obviously weed didn’t make them commit their evil acts, but it may have scrambled their brains enough for empathy...

Low IQs are Africa's curse, says lecturer
https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2006/nov … n.research

In the paper he cites Ethiopia’s national IQ of 63, the world’s lowest, and the fact that men and women are only expected to live until their mid-40s as an example of his finding that intelligence is the main determinant of someone’s health.

Having examined the effects of economic development and income inequality on health, he was ‘surprised’ to find that IQ had a much more important impact, he said. ‘Poverty, lack of sanitation, clean water, education and healthcare do not increase health and longevity, and nor does economic development.’

The LSE declined to offer any opinion on Kanazawa’s conclusions but defended his right to publish controversial research. A spokeswoman said: ‘This is academic research by Dr Kanazawa based on empirical data and published in a peer-reviewed journal. People may agree or disagree with his findings and are at liberty to voice their opinions to him. The school does not take any institutional view on the work of individual academics.’

Kate Raworth, a senior researcher with Oxfam, said it was ‘ridiculous’ for Kanazawa to blame ill health on low IQ and ‘very irresponsible’ to reach such conclusions using questionable and ‘fragile’ international data on national IQ levels.

Re: IQ and Space Colonisation

I don't know how true it is that African IQs are so low and would like to see their sample size first and whether or not they went to some farming village in the boonies or to a city, but assuming that they're not cherry picking of data points to support a hypothesis or agenda, then there's no job that these people could hold within our military where they would not be considered a danger to themselves and others.

I wonder how much of this "low IQ" is actually systemic abuse / starvation / lack of clean water / little to no education, because all that stuff affects IQ.  Your brain doesn't develop the same way when you're being slowly starved to death, parasites and diseases affect the brain as well, and so on.  I'm guessing that more of the explanation is related to those factors than "they're low-IQ because they came from Africa" or because they're African.

Re: IQ and Space Colonisation

The fact that so many African countries score low suggests that this isn't a statistical aberation caused by small sample size.
https://worldpopulationreview.com/count … by-country

But one thing to remember when comparing average IQs is that they are averages.  Within every country's population, there are both geniuses and simpletons.  A lower average suggests that there are relatively more simpletons.  But it doesn't tell us anything about any particular randomly selected individual.

Re: IQ and Space Colonisation

Calliban,

The fact that all of them don't score low suggests that calling them "generally dumb" because they're from African countries is a gross over-simplification that precludes greater thought devoted to identifying underlying causes.  Most Europeans from the Middle Ages would've been considered mentally retarded by modern standards.  A lot of people from Africa still live the same way they lived during the Stone Age, and in general, our cognitive capabilities during those periods of time, ignoring those on the fringes with the highest IQs, was pretty pathetic.  That's part of why we had so many wars and short, bleak lives.  Even today, what, 15% or so are at or above 120.  That's not much.

IQ only measures the ability to learn through pattern recognition, spatial skills, etc, and assumes prior knowledge of the subject matter.

Edit:
The IQ tests I've taken included a battery of questions related reading comprehension, math, spatial, pattern recognition skills.  I have no clue if all IQ tests are conducted this way, but the ones I took were.  I couldn't swear to it, but I'm guessing that people who have never attended any formal schooling did really poorly on reading comprehension and math.  The spatial skills and pattern recognition problems require no prior knowledge.

What prior knowledge of such subject matter do people living in the Stone Age have?

Almost none.  If you never get to learn or apply what you've learned, those skills atrophy rather quickly.

When you live a simple life, you probably don't benefit greatly from having a high IQ.  Being smarter usually helps, but being stronger and more resilient probably helps a lot more.

In the words of one of my friends in the Navy, "You know, kbd, if you were a little dumber you'd be a lot happier here."

Re: IQ and Space Colonisation

Pretty sure they use Ravens Progressive Matrices for cross cultural comparison, which doesn't involve reading comprehension. Researchers are well aware of the problem of using tests that require education to understand.

Huh. Has anyone considered doing adoption studies to see how much effect being in a desperately poor unhealthy country has on IQ? Plenty of African babies have been adopted by westerners looking to show how amazingly virtuous they are... a decent enough population that is *fairly* randomly selected from their countries of origin but raised in western lifestyles. Doesn't account for everything of course, they were still born to mothers who were dealing with a high disease burden.

To be honest I'm not that interested in the genetic components of intelligence. Yes, it's dominant, but it's probably also a lot harder to affect than the environmental component. I want to know what it is we need to be doing to get people to their genetic potential.

Re: IQ and Space Colonisation

Terraformer,

If the test subjects in question can't read or write at any level, then simply conveying test instructions that they understand would be difficult.  Every IQ test I ever took, as well as every standardized test evaluating knowledge of a particular subject matter, had English instructions printed on it.  Granted, the IQ test instructions were always very minimal and simple, such as "select the next sequence in the pattern".  I presume those sorts of instructions could also be verbally conveyed.  However, that assumes spoken language comprehension, which may also be lacking.  Someone with a higher IQ would or at least should catch on to what was being asked of them faster than someone with a lower IQ, but again, we are then testing their understanding of the task, via spoken language comprehension.  Basically, we assume some level of prior education, which is a bad assumption when there typically isn't any.

I also want to know how many, if any, of these people were given a decent meal prior to testing and a good night's sleep.  I can readily show how critical thinking skills deteriorate under physical stress.  The Navy made a point of demonstrating that.  If you tested the IQ of someone who hasn't eaten in two days, nor had a decent night's sleep, then they will score lower, period.  If everyone taking the test is not in the process of starving to death, they've had a decent night's sleep, are not severely afflicted by a health issue such as a toothache or parasite infection, and the proctor can demonstrate that the test subjects understand what's being asked of them, then I will accept whatever the results happen to be.  That's a lot more involved than handing out pieces of paper to random people and telling them to "complete it".

Here in the West, we seem to take all of this for granted.  It's not a given when you live in the Stone Age.  I've been to enough different countries to know that many of these people have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.  I will readily concede that test scores are likely to be much lower in places with higher levels of poverty, crime, disease, and war.

If already had AI machine construct a Mars Biosphere and you brought back some Neanderthal, Denisova hominins put them to sleep inside rockets and blasted them to Mars and had them awaken inside Biodomes would they do better or worse than our modern people on this Earth. The Neanderthal is an extinct species or subspecies of archaic humans who lived in Eurasia until about 40,000 years ago, the "causes of Neanderthal disappearance about 40,000 years ago remain highly contested. Neanderthal technology was quite sophisticated for this age of pre-history man, its tech included Stone Age Mousterian stone-tool industry, the Neanderthal had an an ability to create fire and build cave hearths, make the adhesive birch bark tar, craft at least simple clothes similar to blankets and ponchos, weave, go seafaring through the Mediterranean and make use of medicinal plants, the first identification of a Denisovan individual occurred in 2010, based on mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) extracted from a juvenile female finger bone excavated from the Siberian Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains in 2008, Nuclear DNA indicates close affinities with Neanderthals. Denisovans apparently interbred with modern humans, with the highest percentages (roughly 5%) occurring in Melanesians, Aboriginal Australians, and Filipino Negritos. Analyses of the modern human genomes indicate past interbreeding with at least two groups of archaic humans, Neanderthals and Denisovans, and that such interbreeding events occurred on multiple occasions. Comparisons of the Denisovan, Neanderthal, and modern human genomes have revealed evidence of a complex web of interbreeding among these lineages

There is a type of insanity in trying to engineer or control colonies and not letting them evolve naturally, sometimes people claim the idea of a penal colony or exile colony worked out for example in Australia.

In Hollywood film made by foreign studio a movie 'Pandorum' they explored the fictional idea of two crew members of a spaceship wake up from hypersleep to discover that all their colleagues are missing. Despite this, it appears that they are not alone the German/British science fiction horror film, Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Antje Traue, Cung Le play characters on a troubled lovecraftian aliens type long duration horror mission. However the aliens might not be alien but human, mutants might be aboard the ship but hints the crew are mentally unwell, they also are sick and hallucinate a mutant attack, it seems that hundreds of years have passed on this space colonization ship and the initial humans are no longer human. Others they have become like the HG Wells story of Time Machine a future of savage, simian Morlocks, distant descendants a man becoming more strong, brutal, savage again. If we remade some Caveman, high healing ability but Low IQ would people then send these reborn pre- historic people to Mars?

Musical training in childhood correlates with higher than average IQ
https://doi.org/10.1111%2Fj.0956-7976.2004.00711.x

The idea that music makes you smarter has received considerable attention from scholars and the media. The present report is the first to test this hypothesis directly with random assignment of a large sample of children (N = 144) to two different types of music lessons (keyboard or voice) or to control groups that received drama lessons or no lessons. IQ was measured before and after the lessons. Compared with children in the control groups, children in the music groups exhibited greater increases in full-scale IQ. The effect was relatively small, but it generalized across IQ subtests, index scores, and a standardized measure of academic achievement. Unexpectedly, children in the drama group exhibited substantial pre- to post-test improvements in adaptive social behavior that were not evident in the music groups.

The Fool?

Idiot, imbecile, and moron were used in a psychological classification system, and each one was assigned to a fairly specific range of abilities. Today society is deciding these old terms are offensive or they were demeaning or condescending. They were replaced with mild, moderate and severe. Down syndrome children first were called Mongolian idiots because their features were thought to look like people from Mongolia; Down syndrome first was called mongolism. Levels of retardation, or developmental disability, now are defined by more than just IQ — levels of mental and physical functioning are also considered. People of 26 to 50 IQs were called imbeciles and 51 to 70 were called morons. Morons could communicate and learn common tasks; imbeciles stalled mentally at about six years old; and idiots couldn't respond to stimulus or communicate with any level of competency.

First tests showing differences in IQ scores between different population groups in the United States were the tests of United States Army recruits in World War I.

Inequality by Design: Cracking the Bell Curve Myth is a 1996 book by Claude S. Fischer, Michael Hout, Martín Sánchez Jankowski, Samuel R. Lucas, Ann Swidler, and Kim Voss. The book is a reply to The Bell Curve (1994) by Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein and attempts to show that the arguments in The Bell Curve are flawed. The Bell Curve: Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life is a 1994 book by psychologist Richard J. Herrnstein and political scientist Charles Murray, in which the authors argue that human intelligence is substantially influenced by both inherited and environmental factors and that it is a better predictor of many personal outcomes, including financial income, job performance, birth out of wedlock, and involvement in crime than are an individual's parental socioeconomic status.
The book was and remains highly controversial, especially where the authors discussed purported connections between race and intelligence and suggested policy implications based on these purported connections. Here's Why Some Brains Really Are Smarter, According to This New Study
https://www.sciencealert.com/high-iq-co … te-density

People with a higher IQ are more likely to have fewer connections between the neurons in the outer layer of their brain, according to a recent study.

While previous research has suggested bigger brains are indeed smarter, a closer look at the microstructural architecture suggests it's not just a matter of more brain cells, as much as more efficiently connected ones.

No bail and no brains: Seattle judge releases accused mass shooter
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/rest … ss-shooter

Usually, when we talk about cashless bail, we're talking about suspects who go on to commit murders after they're released — not the ones already accused of killing one innocent bystander and shooting six other people (including a child) in the downtown area of a major city during rush hour. But not in Seattle, where it looks like the judges let everyone out .

Does Curiosity Make People More Intelligent?
https://exploringyourmind.com/curiosity … telligent/
Most experts in the field agree that intelligence is a mental capacity involving different abilities. Among them is the ability to reason, give meaning to reality and create plans. It also involves the capacity to solve problems, memorize, think abstractly, and understand or generate new data from previous information.

An intelligence quotient (IQ) is a total score derived from a set of standardised tests or subtests designed to assess human intelligence. The abbreviation "IQ" was coined by the psychologist William Stern for the German term Intelligenzquotient, his term for a scoring method for intelligence tests at University of Breslau he advocated in a 1912 book

One uncomfortable issue for politics is some cultures might be smarter than others, with the inception of IQ testing in the early 20th century, differences in average test performance between groups were observed.
https://www.vox.com/the-big-idea/2017/6 … se-critics
Some others write IQ differences between individuals have been shown to have a large hereditary component, it does not follow that mean group-level disparities (between-group differences) in IQ necessarily have a genetic basis.

Goldberg says the magazine a little like Hitler KKK propaganda it needed more feminism, diverse moral relativism and open borders politics, it ignored non-white Americans and showed different groups as exotic, thereby promoting racial cliché.

A revival of public debate followed the appearance of The Bell Curve (1994), a book by Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray that supported the general viewpoint of Jensen. A statement in support of Herrnstein and Murray titled "Mainstream Science on Intelligence," was published in The Wall Street Journal with 52 signatures. The Bell Curve also led to critical responses in a statement titled "Intelligence: Knowns and Unknowns" of the American Psychological Association and in several books, including The Bell Curve Debate (1995), Inequality by Design (1996) and a second edition of The Mismeasure of Man (1996) by Stephen Jay Gould.
