Side note: It is really fun seeing current activity on the forum. Much seems (to me at least) to be of high quality.
The new topic by kbd512 has promise of stimulating ideas and contributions by members, while the original is solidly progressing toward exposure to a serious audience.
You are probably aware (but some readers may not) that the National Space Society routinely pays all expenses for speakers it invites to national conferences each year. It is ** that ** opportunity I am hoping to open up for RobertDyck, as he prepares for March 12th.

I would much rather have more of these technical level talks than the political but its the only way that I can see to get others on the same page is to show we are not that far apart on issues.

This is for SpaceNut (primarily but all welcome) ...
My news feed came up with a teaser that might (or might not) have been an advertisement .... not sure
The essence of it was a suggestion ? of using propane as a refrigeration coolant instead of the industry standard gas mixture ...
I've lost track of where we are since freon was banned ...
I'm dropping this item in housekeeping so it reaches you so you can look into it and post it where it belongs if you think it has any merit.
We are definitely going to need refrigeration on Mars for all sorts of reasons, and the idea of using something like propane might make sense.

yes "propane as a refrigeration coolant" can be used that way until you get a leak followed by a spark....

For SpaceNut re #1861
Thanks for the reminder of why propane might not be a first choice of coolant fluid on Earth.
That problem would certainly NOT exist on Mars. There would be no reason to have refrigeration equipment inside a habitat.
Propane has more energy than methane (per Google) but I have no way of knowing if that makes a difference for cooling purposes.
From Google:
How do you convert methane to propane? - Quora
https://www.quora.com › How-do-you-convert-methan...
Feb 6, 2016 — Propane actually has much higher BTU (heat) per cubic foot (meter, whatever) than methane, so changing it would require adding atoms to the methane molecule.

It would take more energy to make propane from methane on Mars, and it takes energy to make Methane.
If there is a topic where this discussion makes more sense and would fit in better, I'd appreciate your suggesting it.
Details to be explored are:
Compare refrigerant coolants for:
1) Effectiveness
2) Risks (fire, poisoning, etc)
3) Costs to manufacture
4) Risks of leaks (eg, Hydrogen is most difficult to keep in a pressurized container)
5) ? other ?

It allows for the outside temperatures to not free the liquid in the loop when stagnant and not moving but the heat exchange would need to be decoupled with a different media for the actual cooling with in the habitat areas. So the box that contains the exchanger will need to be well insulated and heated to keep the other liquid from freezing if it does not flow as a result of cooling need.

For SpaceNut re #1063 ...
Thanks for introducing (or perhaps re-introducing) the possibility that habitats on Mars might need cooling. I would imagine the cold of Mars will have such an influence that the only modification inside the habitats is going to be heating.
On the ** other ** hand, head producing equipment like reactors will need active cooling, even if the ultimate destination of the thermal energy is passive radiation devices (either heating the atmosphere or radiating to space).

Nobody wants what’s coming, so nobody wants to see what’s coming. On the eve of the first civil war, the most intelligent, the most informed, the most dedicated people in the United States could not see it coming. Even when Confederate soldiers began their bombardment of Fort Sumter, nobody believed that conflict was inevitable. The north was so unprepared for the war they had no weapons.
Does the country have the humility to acknowledge that its old orders no longer work? Does it have the courage to begin again? As it managed so spectacularly at the birth of its nationhood, the United States requires the boldness to invent a new politics for a new era. It is entirely possible that it might do so. America is, after all, a country devoted to reinvention.
Once again, as before, the hope for America is Americans. But it is time to face what the Americans of the 1850s found so difficult to face: The system is broken, all along the line. The situation is clear and the choice is basic: reinvention or fall.

For SpaceNut ... this is a special request ....
GW Johnson is considering my inquiry about creating seminars on subjects of possible interest to NewMars members, and to the outside world as well.
In support of this idea, would you be willing to set up a new topic: NewMars Seminars in the Meta index level?
The purpose of the new topic would be to publicize online seminar videos we would create using the new Pro Zoom service.
I have confirmed that the videos that Executive Directory James Burk provided to you can be imported to movie making/editing software.
An opening seminar under consideration would be on use of the Spreadsheet Software created by GW Johnson to calculate fuel requirements for trips to Mars.

For SpaceNut .... are you in the path of this?
A swath of the East Coast was bracing Thursday for the second major snowstorm in five days while blinding snow, high winds and below-zero temperatures rolled across much of the nation's northern tier.
AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Joe Lundberg said a storm targeting much of the East should develop into the first bomb cyclone of 2022. A bomb cyclone is defined as a storm that’s central pressure plummets within 24 hours. The storm could whip up strong winds, pull in more moisture and drive higher snow totals as it heads toward New England, he said.
If you are, best wishes for warm air inside the house.
Remember, just a kilometer down, temperatures are (said to be) toasty warm!

I'm attempting to relearn how to use Dropbox to share files.
The immediate goal is to allow a file created by GW Johnson to be viewed and downloaded by the public, but not edited or deleted.
There is a Windows version of the file as well, for those who do not have the free Open Office software installed.

This is (only) for SpaceNut ... still hoping you can spare a minute or two to think about creating a NewMars Seminars topic in the Meta Index level.
I don't yet have a firm plan to create a seminar that would go into this folder, but there appears to be some interest.
A seminar is different from a YouTube educational video, because students interact with the instructor during a learning activity.
My concept is to make source files (such as the spreadsheet referenced in the previous post) available to the public, so they can work with the spreadsheet while playing the video.

Thanks for taking the time to note our progress in cleaning up old posts. I can see the results happening in real time, when I watch the screen after launching a run. The bandits are shown at first, then magic happens, the upload occurs, and the repaired post is shown on the screen, before the program goes on to the next post.
We still have thousands of posts to go, but with each day, we take a small set of bandits out of circulation.
I like the number you decided upon. It is enough so we can see progress, but it usually finishes before Noon local time, which is convenent.
