Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

Just posting this before I get some shuteye (caught it on /.).

Apparently Scifi is going to do an 18 hour miniseries on KSR's Mars Trilogy!!

http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/art-sfc. … /12.30.sfc

I'm pumped, being halfway though Green Mars again, I really can't wait to see how this story is turned into a miniseries. I thought Scifi did a good job with Dune, myself.

*The link you provided says it's going to be a 6-hour miniseries about _Red Mars_ (the first book in the series).

Sci-Fi's "Dune" was good, yes.

Well I'll be, you're absolutely right, Cindy. Guess I shouldn't be posting while sleepy. That's good, then. 18 hours wouldn't be enough at all to get all three books packed in!

So woo, still. Going to be really great.

Anyone ever see Earth 2? If so, would they happen to know anyone with the episodes on VCR tape or in VCD format? smile

Kazaa is crap (too many corrupt files, though E2 might be okay since it's 'rare'). Bittorrent wouldn't have it, unless some speciality groups rereleased it, and I haven't noticed lately. I guess you guys just aren't hardcore enough. smile

Have you ever seen the show, though? If so, what do you think?

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

I caught some of the earlier bits of the show...

I stopped watching once my schedule changed and they started doing some weird stuff with the religious alien thing. Got a bit cooky for me.

I've been looking for The Prisoner eps- old SF British series.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

*We've got some rather "young blood" who frequent the message boards, but I'm wondering if there's anyone here who has seen the early 1970s movie _Silent Running_, starring Bruce Dern?

I remember seeing it as a kid a couple of times in the late 70s/very early 80s; each time it was aired after 10:30 p.m. on a Friday or Saturday night.  I remember Dern's character tending the plants and animals, the 3 robots who assisted him, and his being very angry and frustrated with idiot shipmates who didn't care when they ran their vehicles through some rows of plants, etc.

What I -don't- remember about the movie, however, is that the animals and plants in this ship are the last (or nearly so) from Earth, and are being safe-kept on the ship.  Apparently orders come from Earth to destroy this fauna and flora.  Dern rebels, kills his shipmates (who apparently are happy to comply with orders to destroy the animals and plants, and return to Earth)...[and the last we see are the bubble domes floating away with the robots still tending the plants and animals -- I do remember that scene clearly].  I got this information from a web site which describes films; this was a rather indepth "review."  I guess it's been so long since I've seen the film that I've forgotten much of it.

Very touching story.  The special effects were pretty good too, for the time, as I recall.

I'm planning on ordering it for my DVD collection; I can't find it anywhere in town to rent, much less to purchase.

Comments anyone?  Did the film review I summarized above "get it right"?

clark, yeah, my rule for scifi is no telepathy, no time travel, no magic (unless said magic is explained scientifically).

And sorry Cindy, I never heard of that. sad

Hmmm, sounds like "Time Bandits" wouldn't exactly be your cup of tea.

I liked that one space series.... a bunch of marines in space in their ships... forget the name though- usually aired right after or before E2.

I don't mind magic as long as it is not too liberally applied, but I can't stand time travel or telepathy.  After all, time travel is just too weird to ingore for the stake of the story.  Unless it involves Austin Powers, in which case I shall make an exception.  Telepathy?  I would rather eat certain unwholesome items before watching a movie with telepathy in it.

I like "Empire Strikes Back" best of all sci fi, and yes, I am a star wars nerd.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

While in general I don't like fantasy (i.e. swords, magic, dragons, etc) I am perfectly happy with such weird stuff as magic and telepathy *as long as* they are handled in a consistent and logical manner. Take the example of Babylon 5 - they had telepaths there, but their skills worked in a very circumscribed and organised manner. However, in other fantasy shows you might see a telepathic hero being able to take control of someone else in one episode, but in the next he isn't because of some made-up rule or silly loophole that exists for only that episode.

And this applies for SF as well; I liked Star Trek: TNG, but I didn't like Voyager that much because they seemed to be making and breaking the 'rules' of the fictional universe as they went along.

STNG?

All I have to say is that Councilor Troy was the biggest waste of space on the bridge.

She either was absolutely no help, or came to a conclusion that some entity or other exsisted after everything ran amok.

Picard fell for the eye candy on that one.  big_smile

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

Yeah Adrian, I liked B5's telepathy for the most part. But remember, telepaths were potentially God-like (the first season portrayed one of them as being able to do anything basically, because he was manipulated in whatever way). I still didn't enjoy the time travel, but it just didn't happen except for that one time, so it was okay.

I always have technology or political gripes, though (especially in shows where the political structure of the society are constantly being talked about, like B5), but I can't escape them with my critical eye.

I saw mission to Mars the other night. It was pretty okay, really, the physics and everyhting were ?fine? until they landed on Mars. Then it went stupid. The wind dynamics were so wrong.

there was som kinda cool Sci-Fi/Fantasy movies in the '80s.  Ice Pirates, Adventures of Bukaroo Bonzai, RoboCop, Aliens, and countless others I can't remember, some other hoky ones I like, such as Space Balls, Star Gate, Time Cop, Time Bandits..  So many that aren't that well known, or becoming forgotten flicks relegated to white trash video rental because it's not available on dvd.

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u … 24353]Bill, you're in good company...

*I'm surprised "Star Trek:  The Motion Picture" didn't make this list.  Of all the ST (original cast) films, it -was- serious and science-oriented (quite unlike the others, which were purely swashbuckling/razzle-dazzle entertainment in scope).

:hm:

"Star Trek:  The Motion Picture" is one of the best, IMO.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

Josh, the coolest thing about Mission to Mars was the Alien 3-D map of early Mars.

I went to the movie thrilled that they finally made a Mars exploration movie. I left disappointed. The 3 things that bothered me the most;

1. At the end of the movie we meet these Disney like peaceful aliens. Are these not the same aliens responsible for brutally killing the astronauts at the beginning of the movie?

2. Ignoring Newton’s law that an object in motion stays in motion until an outside force effect it. The whole scene where the wife couldn’t safe her husband because she didn’t have enough fuel was silly. Why did she stop halfway and say she didn’t have enough fuel to get to him. She was in Space! Once she got going, she could have coasted all the way there.

3. Ripping off the movie Abyss with the lame ending.

The movie had a ton of other problems, but those were the top three for me.

So when Red Mars came out I had my reservations about seeing that movie. I read the book first. I loved the book, Red Mars so I got the DVD. I liked it- the book was better.

Between the two. Mission to Mars was bad. Red Mars was good.

Re: Favorite Sci-Fi Movie? - Blade Runner for me. . .

The husband dying was actually my favorite part about Mission to Mars, and probably the high point (and I'm saying this even though I like Tim Robbins and I thought it was silly killing him off).

I think it was realistic. Remember, the wife was tethered, all her mommentum was absorbed by the rest of the mass (of the ship and the other two astronauts) when she got to the end of the line. She wanted to let go of the tether, jet to her husband, and jet back to the tether.

What made it scary was the fact that the first time she tried to get the tether to him, it stopped about five inches from his reach. By the time she attempted the jetting procedure, she was a few hundred feet from him (remember, he's moving away from them at a slightly faster velocity). So if she had initially jetted toward him tethered, her arms would've easily compensated for that last 5 inches (even if not, she would've had enough fuel to get back to the tether).
