For SpaceNut re Processing of Spam ID's
Searchterm:IDUpdates Schedule of Updates of NewMars Spam ID's
Searchterm:ID Updates
As of this morning, there were 16482 ID's in the New Mars database. (Revised total is 16659 as of 2021/01/16)
The current Sol is 588, and there are 668 sols in the next Martian year. 748 sols is enough time to examine all 16482 ID's.
748 sols is equivalent to 770+ Sidereal Earth Days, or 768+ standard Earth days, per www.kylesconverter.com.
16482 / 768 is 21+, so an Earth Day ration of 22 ID's would complete the review before New Years Day of Mars Year 36.
22 ID's per day should be manageable. I'll try to review 22 ID's today, to see what that feels like.
One benefit of this process would be the opportunity to visit members on an individual basis.
By "members" in this case, I mean anyone who has posted at least one message that was not spam, as evaluated by the forum Administrator at the time.
I'm guessing there might be as many as 600 "members" by that definition.
At the end of this process, all Member ID's with sort characteristics less than "T" will have been collected at the top of the User List in default display mode.
Edit#1: SpaceNut .... there is no need for you to unban any of the ID's I'm working on. We now have more than enough ID's available for new members who may be nominated for membership in the forum. I have set up a schedule to try to "fix" 22 ID's per day for the next 768 Earth days. During that time, there will be opportunities for existing members to look for and to nominate persons who can help to move projects forward.
Edit#2: SpaceNut ... there is no need for you to ban any more of the Spam Id's ... I'll be able to clean them quickly if they occur.
It is not necessary to ban them, because the ID name is changed, and the email address is changed.
Since the Spam entities are software, they will try the ID they have on file, and when that fails, they will go on to the next, until they run out of Id's they've created on this web site.

While a private email to you is an important option for members, would you be willing to consider a nomination offered in the open posting area of this topic, or perhaps in the new Recruiting topic?
The opening nomination could be done without identifying information, with a view to finding out if the candidate might be someone you'd like to interview.
The actual interview could be done via email for privacy.

I did ban and removed the questionable poser.
I reported the translation in the report for you to see.
The time zone was another issue.
I can unban those accounts effected as needed.
On another note the garage removed the engine from the Subaru outback on Tuesday morning and I gave aid to the mechanic to push the vehicle out of the lift bay so that he could use it for his normal business.
Tonight I started to break the engine down removing the intake manifold and most of the wiring from sensors on the engine that was connected to it on the top portion of the engine. Also removed was the alternator and air conditioning brackets adjusters.
Tomorrow I am hoping to finish breaking down each sides valve covers and remove the heads to expose the gaskets for the rebuild if there is no signs of damage. If there is I have a back up engine to make use of for heads if they are in need to be replaced.
Will buy the gaskets and sealing cover gaskets for the rebuild after doing an inspection of the parts.

Thanks for taking care of that German speaking Russian spam post! I appreciate your being there to resolve situations like that!
FYI ... the process of converting banned ID's to the intermediate state of TestID is settling down into a routine. At this point I find I'm looking forward to the exercise, and to the future encounters with ** real ** posters who are scattered among the spam ID's. This is my first opportunity to "meet" many of the past contributors to the forum in an methodical way.

Thanks for the update on your TLC for the Suburu Outback! The level of maintenance capability you've been reporting seems "right up there" with GW Johnson's maintenance of vehicles over the decades. There are few people on the planet (or at least that I've "met") who are able to take on challenges like that. I think I've mentioned I had two Uncles who were able to tackle projects like that. They were both WW II vets and long gone at this point. It's good to see you and GW Johnson carrying the flame for a while longer.
Seems as though you have an unusually good working relationship with the mechanic who pulled the engine for you.

Question ... is the idea of creating a small consortium to distribute Internet in a neighborhood of any interest? My neighborhood is served by fiber, but then I live in a large metropolitan area. Much of the US, and certainly much of the globe do NOT have that level of service, so Elon's Starlink systems might be quite interesting.
I saw a report of a discussion in a local political body in today's newspaper. The judgement coming out of the discussion appeared to be an estimate that Internet service needs to cost about $20 per month to achieve affordability for a large part of the local population.
The existing commercial Internet providers aren't going to lower prices that low without competition.
Elon's $99 monthly charge could be spread among 5 households to sustain that $20 charge. The concept reminds me of the party line telephones I remember from living in a rural area early on. If that's all you have available, you can live with it.

There is a problem when acting as a reseller of a service as thats what has caused the cable companies all the rise in costs to its customers.
I cleared the banned accounts for the testid's
Tonight's engine work entailed removing the harmonic balancer pulley, belt guards, torsion pulley and timing belt after marking gear alignments for top dead center. Removed the compressor for the AC such as to free up the dipstick holder tube. I was able to get all bolts out of the passenger valve cover but the drivers side has one rusted to soft to remove still stuck. Garage owner might attempt to get it free tomorrow otherwise its vise grips and grinding it flush to get the cover off.

On a related topic ... perhaps we need to step back a notch .... RobertDyck asked for a person to help design the food service component of the Large Ship project. kbd512 offered the appropriate and helpful suggestion of approaching a Cruise Ship captain or XO for a lead.
However, I think your suggestion (as I remember it) to secure Mars Society approval and guidance for a recruiting effort is where we should begin. I have no inside track with the Mars Society, but perhaps there are members of the forum who do.
The forum is now closed to spammers, so it may be that the status of the forum can rise a bit in the eyes of the Mars Society leadership.
A demonstration of intent to recruit high-value members might be of interest to the Society.

Hello. Pardon me if I am a bit unfamilar with the mechanics of these discussion groups. I have read and recommend Zubrin’s “Case for Space” & other works.
Question: Were the figures for the chemical reactions – RWGS, Sabatier, etc available somewhere in a spread-sheet format, or simulation code? Are there spreadsheets or (e.g. MATLAB) simulations available that, for a mock Mar base, can track propellant, thermal and electical usage and production? I’d hoped to find this at marssociety.org, but have not. Such a simulation would be informative and maybe more interesting than the silliness of “Red Planet Farming” on Steam.SpaceNut:
Good question as to the analog sites data for use to reverse engineer the amount of each that we would need for a real mars location. http://newmars.com/forums/ has a large amount of information buried within the many forums topics which does include the analog sites as well. We currently have the registrations closed to slow and stop the general low levels of use in hopes to attract new members to add to discussions that are ongoing. You can contact me and I will send the email login so that you can gain access to a user profile to login with to post. Upon logging in change the profile data so as to keep it for your use.

For SpaceNut re ID recovery .... TestID221 through TestID242 are ready for unbanning.
Thinking ahead to our first invited new member ...
It the past, new members just showed up.
There was no formal introduction provided or expected.
This forum is moving toward a formal by-invitation membership structure.
All current members (defined as those with posts who were not banned) are grandfathered into the structure.
New members would (presumably) be vetted before they are admitted, and they could be introduced with some minimal details about their backgrounds and the contribution they are enlisted to make on behalf of one of the existing member projects.
I'd like to suggest that nominations be posted in full view of the membership and of the global audience, without identifying details, since preservation of identity is a characteristic of this forum. That should be preserved.
Individual members can forego public anonymity if they wish.
However, ** every ** nominee should be known to the approving individual, who would be an Administrator or a Moderator acting as sponsor.

That invite could also go through the webmaster as well to increase opportunity to get new members as well.
Will take care of the unbanning as well...
We can also include other web pages that mars society maintains such as the https://marspedia.org/Home along with others.
Welcome to Marspedia!
The collaborative resource for exploring and settling the Red Planet.
Statistics: 760 articles | 1,495 uploads | 211 registered contributors | 9 administrators
Maybe even the analog sites could also get the explorers to voice content on the forum as well.
Fostering more outreach for the forum also should be considered by all and not just the few invite a freind....

Thanks for the link to marspedia.org !!!
Category Hierarchy
All categories for Marspedia roll up into the following 6 top-level categories. Two lower tiers of categories and pages linked to them can be seen by clicking the link icon on each. Creators of new pages should only link one or more of the categories in the hierarchy shown below to their page.I. Mars Planetary Science - physical description of the planet; all the science data that is collected
II. Mars Spacecraft/Robotic Missions - (non-human) - mission planning and execution history.
III. Mars Human Exploration - human exploration concepts and planning
IV. Mars Human Settlement - including plans & concepts, philosophical/ethical considerations, and mars analogue research
V. Mars Outreach - Advocacy for Mars Exploration/Settlement - people and organizations (Mars Society, Marspedia, etc), political action, and public outreach & education
VI. Mars Arts and Literature - Mars in literature, music, movies, plays, graphic arts, photography
I'm picking up here on the (to me ** very ** significant) inclusion of the words "plans" and "planning" in the listing of topic categories ...
The Wikipedia structure ** may ** provide the stability for reference that is missing from the forum database, with its constant flow of new posts and the aging of planning related posts.
I have some (small) experience editing on the main Wikipedia site, so I am (a bit) familiar with the procedures.
This might be worth considering for the Large Ship and for Asteroid related projects.
Regarding membership ... I'd like to suggest thinking of the people recruited for projects as different from ordinary members. They would be invited to make specific contributions to help specific projects to move forward.
Having a stable place to store their contributions would be helpful.
Furthermore, having a stable place for project plans would be helpful for Quark's Friends to evaluate the potential for funding.

For SpaceNut and all celebrating Thanksgiving despite the challenges of the time ...
This was from 2013 ...
Wishing all a happy Thanksgiving Day.
Mine will be with family, making the meal hopefully with a little help and enjoying the Macy thanksgiving day Parade on TV being shown by the networks on the cable provider.
My meal will be sort of traditional but I can not say that for Irradiated Turkey, Thermostabilized Yams: Thanksgiving Dinner in Space to feed two Americans currently living on the International Space Station amoung the six people that have been there for a short while.
Our family (extended) is staying put this year. My inquiry about Zoom visits fell flat, so it'll be a quiet day.
I understand Macy's is putting on a (modified) show despite the restrictions in New York.

The is an emotionally charged time of year as we go through the rising numbers of those catching covid-19, not having enough to make ends meet let alone having a large meal may be an issue for many. We can only hope that we will unite in peace and strive to make a difference to others that have not as much as we might have.
I am wishing all a happy Thanksgiving day as well tahanson43206: to the many members of NewMars plus Mars Society as well. Be safe....
