Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #325

What do you think of setting up a special topic for new members who need that "interactive trainer" service?

That would be a suitable topic for a new member to start out, if we can interest them in using it.

If you think about it, almost any organization has an orientation for new members.  Certainly the military has a rigorous one, and most industries where I've had the opportunity to work have had some orientation for new employees.

At present, it seems (to me at least) that the forum is a "sink or swim" environment.

Re: Housekeeping

It would need to be part of the forum signup and acceptance process if one was created. Sort of like power point slides with follow up questions that must be answered with passing grade to allow for the user to get further towards being able to post.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #327

It seems unlikely the IT department at the Mars Society will be able to allocate any time to the major changes you described in this post.

You can create a new topic for Orientation of New Members right now.

We already have a bit of history to post there .... Yoda and the more recent new member SeaDragon might be worth considering for illustration.

If a new person shows up and dives into an ongoing topic, it might be possible to encourage them to move over to the Orientation topic where they could interact with other members as they learn a bit about how the forum software works, and about forum conventions such as staying on topic.

Re: Housekeeping

Seems like some of us created a list of reference and how-to documents all could use a few months ago.  Maybe a year.  I'm pretty sure Spacenut was involved in that,  and I think maybe Tahanson43206,  too.  Those lists are here on the forum site somewhere.  They might be the core of some sort of reference library for any user to consult.  There ought to be a way to store them as such.

Re: Housekeeping

For GW Johnson re #330 .... thanks for the reminder there may be a topic set up in the forum for Reference and How-To links.

For SpaceNut ... Please remove [OtiliaBroo} and his mp3 post form Other Space Advocacy Organizations.  It is not a good fit, in my opinion.

For SpaceNut ... There does not appear to be a topic for References .... The Index level "Archive" might be a good place for one.

Per GW Johnson's suggestion, the title might include How-To ... Something like: References library and How-To Repository

Over time that new topic could build up significant value, just by linking to existing posts in the NewMars database.

It could gain additional value by linking to external resources.

Re: Housekeeping

I save the mp3 stuff via the quote report post function and have removed it from view as it is a spammer...

Not sure if thats the business mission stuff in the human folder or just important links in general for GW...
We have many topics with a vast number of links to reference documents some of which I am sure are gone by now and with out a means to store them permanently on a Mars society server we are not going to be able to anything more than place links into a new location that does not solve the issue of the links going dead at some point in time.

Human Business and flight plan for mars plus space acronyms and that can be found in the Human mission folder along with others.

Re: Housekeeping

This is a follow up for SpaceNut regarding display of tire pressure on the Suburu computer screen ...

A preliminary reply from a relative seems to indicate that the display reported the exact tire that was low, and that the display came up on two occasions.

However, the wording of the reply was ambiguous, so I wrote back to ask for clarification.

For SpaceNut re RobertDyck Large Ship topic ....

I realize you have 1001 items to think about and respond to....

Still, this is the second time in recent days that RobertDyck has asked for help with his Large Ship project ...

If you do not know anyone in the hospitality industry directly, perhaps there is a way for us (all ???) to pull together to contact someone who works in or is familiar with the field?

For SpaceNut ... the PlotMaster was updated with the 94 chemical elements.

While some of the elements may not see economic activity for a while, the framework will be in place for when the time comes.

Re: Housekeeping

This is for SpaceNut for guidance ....

Occasionally a member of the forum may create a topic, and then want to keep others from posting in that topic.

Are you aware of a feature of FluxBB that would allow for that?

There ** is ** an option ... any moderator or the Administrator can remove a post from a topic.

A disadvantage appears to be that any posts ** after ** the one deleted will be deleted as well.

It would be better if a topic could be marked so that only the topic creator can update it.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #341

Thank you for considering my inquiry.  I appreciate the coaching, and will keep the tip for closing a topic in mind.

However, my question is a bit different, and since we have a situation going on right now where it is a concern, I'd like to pursue it a bit further.

In the current situation, I think the person who created the topic would like to keep posting to it, but keep other posters out.

I don't know (and rather doubt) if such a feature is available, but figured it would not hurt to ask.

Re: Housekeeping

I think only mods or admins can do so with regards to only a single users topic posting and even another of those can still make entries into it. The normal member does not see those functions from what I recall with the topic close function.

Ban completed and also a good dozen more for the last few days worth of new registrants.

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re #344

Thanks for the reply re topic management ...

And thanks for taking care of "Les" and others ....

The videos are accumulating at the Mars 2020 web site.  Since I missed seeing most of them during the live event, I'm looking forward to seeing them in coming days.

RobertDyck is really building up a solid looking concept!  He needs professional level assistance, so I hope we (all forum members) can recruit retired experts in the many fields that are needed, to provide pro bono tips to move the project along.

There should be NO need to pay anyone to do anything to realize this project.  The numbers of highly qualified retired experts needed is in thousands, and we need to catch them during the golden window between retirement and the time when they are ready to ** really ** relax.

Re: Housekeeping

Subaru finally had the head gaskets fail but I am using the back up vehicle that needs some work temporarily until we can get the engine pulled to get it fixed.
Temporary vehicle is having misfires that set the engine repair soon indicator to flashing....of course need to pull the intake manifold to get to the coil and plugs for the side that is indicated to be failing....

Re: Housekeeping

For SpaceNut re 346 and other topics updated recently ...

Best wishes for a smooth and rapid head gasket replacement procedure.

Regarding My Hacienda ... thanks for an interesting (and helpful) suggestion ... until now the list of specializations has NOT included any of the emergency services that any community needs, let alone an advanced one in a hostile environment.  Please think about the specializations you'd like to see. I'll do the same. A starting list would include the basics: fire and medical. For Mars, we'd add radiation (monitoring, alert, shelter), and atmosphere (monitoring, alert, shelter).   There are probably numerous others that need to be included.

In Void's topic, about water ... that was an interesting observation ... Void is touchy about anyone posting in his topics.

Regarding the Mars 2020 videos ... Interesting question about transcripts ... this is an (almost) entirely volunteer activity.  Any volunteer with lots of time could take on transcriptions as a labor of love.  The highest priority would (presumably) editing the video recordings to make the individual sessions available.

Thanks for explaining why you've held back support of the video watching schedule proposal.

Elon Musk is looking for "volunteers" to test the beta version of his Starlink system.  Cost is (reported to be) $99 per month and just under $1000 for equipment.

Thanks for this interesting contribution, and for your comments about the Starlink initiative.

Do you have any other interests you would like to develop in this forum?

Hopefully Administrator SpaceNut will be along soon to extend a welcome as well.
